I used to work on the Illinois Central Railroad from 1960 to 1967 and rode this fantastic train many many times from Chicago to Carbondale, Ill. and everytime I hear this song, it brings back wonderful memories of what a fantastic time this was on the railroad...I love this song...its a shame that this train The City Of New Orleans no longer exists like it was back in those days.... Bob Fetzer
@mattdstone You realize that there are anal apetures in this world that will read what you've written, and get ideas, right? Damn, dude, that's as much tempting fate as telling a pitcher that he's throwing a no-hitter.
sure am glad Arlo decided to listen to Steve Goodman sing his song, for this song never gets old I love every time it comes on the radio, everything else just goes away until it is over. Great job Arlo, thanks for posting.
Steve Goodman smiled right up to the very end. He was a warm and kind Human Being. Thank you Mr. Guthrie for sharing that story. Thanks for recording his great song too.
My dad rode the rails during the Great Depression. As a child he regaled me with tales of how to hop a boxcar, how he ate and survived on the road, his encounters with the Wobblies (Workers of the World), etc. This song always makes me think of him. May he R.I.P.
just legend...all i can say.....2nd generation legend on top of it. amazing. Please done worry....not all of my generation are idiots and listen to justin bieber or jonas brothers. THERE IS HOPE!
I used to work on the Illinois Central Railroad...when it was truly a great Railroad with fantastic passenger trains...It is so nice to hear Arlo sing about what was one fantastic train...I get tears in my eyes when I hear this video....brings back so many good memories about great passenger trains....
The first concert my kids ever experienced was Arlol He gave a concert in an outdoor Ampitheatre in our one of our parks. My children were 7 and 2 at the time. They were both quietly transfixed by his music, as was I. They, neither one, have forgotten that concert, although it happened such a long time ago. My oldest son has become a singer and guitar player. My youngest you, like me, appreciates the music.
man honestly i would be up on my feet dancing and singing like a fool to this even though it might not have been appropriate for all those fans....this just puts a feeling into me!!
I saw Arlo live in the fall of 83. Do you know he waited for the second encore before he did this song? The whole place was screaming "CITY OF NEW ORLEANS!" for about five minutes, when Arlo looks up from his keyboard and says, "...now THERE'S and idea!" ...He's just lucky we love him so much.
Man ohhh man.............this song gives me goosebumps, even when I sing it myself and my family joins in...............it's an oldie and a goodie!!! Thanks Arlo...........
I love seeing Arlo give Steve Goodman credit for this great song. Arlo's version was the springboard for this song, and he will always have the most popular version, but I see this song done alot on YT without even a mention of Steve Goodman. These days, it seems the only ones that get credit on so many of the videos or title is the artist who recorded it, and not the one who wrote it.
Sometimes I have to dig way deep to find the actual songwriter. Writers like Goodman should get more credit.
I cry a little every time I see this particular "pristine" performance on video of Arlo Guthrie and this entire group of singers and musicians with him, doing City of New Orleans. I was watching a David Carradine movie about Woody Guthrie and it got me interested in searching a bit on the internet. Then I ran across this video. Later I watched another David Carradine movie & Arlo Guthrie popped up in the movie. How trippy is that? It was called Roadside Prophets.
Strange but this song has always made me misty from the very first time I ever heard it. And I have never figured out why. This is a song I wish I had written. RIP Steve Goodman, this performance did you proud. I'm sure Woody was there with you, smiling down on his son and Pete as they shared the stage. This is a classic, heartwarming performance of a memorable song.
Arlo Guthrie does an outstanding job on City of New Orleans, written by Steve Goodman. Steve Goodman was a fantastic folk song writer and a die-hard Cub fan whose life was cut short by cancer in 1984. Steve wrote 2 classic Chicago Cub anthems, including Do They Still Play the Blues in Chicago and Go Cubs Go, which is played after every Cub victory at Wrigley Field still today. Ironically, Steve's death in 1984 preceeded the Cub's first playoff appearance since 1945 by eight days.
This song has become a National Treasure, and this is a classic performance, with two other National Treasures involved, Arlo and Pete. The song has brought tears to my eyes ever since I first saw Arlo perform it, several months before it was released on "Hobo's Lullabye." Thanks for sharing this video!
I would do anything and be on top of the world if I could meet peat and arlo for a week and hear there storys of there lives, god I bet they would be something else!! just like there music!!!!!!!
holly shit!!!!!!!! I am just speachless, where in hell has this guy been all my life? never mind, I am just happy to have found his music!!!!!!!! just wicked just wicked!!!!!!!! :D man am I smiling!!!! :D :D :D
thank you, this song lifts me up any time I feel a little down, which is not often, but it sure has a effect on me, he is just awesome!! have a great day :))
I know, and this isn't the only song like that either. I mean if you think about it 'St. James Infirmary' and 'I can't help falling in love with you' fit him great too.
seeing them play together is great. I always enjoy musicians who can communicate with the crowd the way Wooody, Arlo & Pete can, well, so long as their musics too my taste. Great footage!
A friend and I tried to sing it at the Farmer's market a couple of weeks ago - both forgot the words half way through, lol! Great song. One of my favorites.
I was 14 when we were on the plane moving from Alaska to Oregon. I was so sad about moving from my home state but this quieted my fears for the flight. It was a good move and I've always remembered this song when I'm faced with a change.

Good song. I've always preferred the original by Goodman, but this isn't too bad itself.
