  • There's more great indie artists out there other than these guys... Interpol, White Lies, Modest Mouse, The Strokes, We are Scientists....and many more...

  • Subtly humorous lyrics about 21st century neurosis and insecurity. Great song. - 'Baby come over I need entertaining.' - 'say something perfect- something I can steel - like baby we'll be fine' Its an apology about not being able to have a relationship because you're too insecure. If you think that would work on your girl - good luck.

  • Thought the lyric was "hear my seven-year-old foetus freaking out". Would have been creepy...

  • a wild 240p appears. The National fan uses refresh... it's not very effective... :(

  • perfect song to say sorry to a girl.

  • For a minute I thought it was Leonard Cohn.

  • @vladdrac88 or maybe God apologizing :)

  • "i put on an argyle sweater and put on a smile" - is that irony?

  • @TheReinwald In the sense that the smile is a fake one (as I interpret it to be), I would consider it irony, yeah.

  • i love the way he sings "i'm so sorry for everything.."

  • I like this band i own ther albums you should as well.

  • This is one of the songs from The National which gives the most meaning to me, though, I dont listen to it, as much as I listen to their other songs, because it freaks me out. I love it.

  • baritone voice makes me so happy.

  • these guys are old but still good!

  • all we've got to do is be brave and be kind.

  • I _always_ get shivers down my spine when Matt sings the line "... for my boss to stop me in the - HALL-way...". I love it.

  • People are getting upset with other people on this comments page who don't like the national. Why are you guys getting so upset about it? on many of my first listens of the national, i found them very suffocating and dull. Now I like them, but still, fans have to respect non-fans opinions and vice-versa.

  • @thenational24 I thought it was his comment... If he doesn't like them.. his choice...

  • The National kick ass.

  • hm is it just me or are they pretty lame?

  • @YourSkyliner Just you

  • @Goma2 ;)

  • @YourSkyliner nah, you and 3 other guys

  • @YourSkyliner its just you. they are so good in so many levels that i feel sorry for you not being able to enjoy it.

  • @shakey3d yah... obviously

  • @YourSkyliner just you. your taste in music must match that of a deaf person

  • @GMcC1875 How about a nice cup of shut the fuck up?

  • @YourSkyliner how about an original comeback?

  • i pull off your jeans and you spill jack and coke in my collar.

  • @KxK96 it's from the album Alligator.

  • what album is this :( ?

  • Heartbreaking the way this song talks about everyone's life, even if they don't know it

  • This band makes me think, makes me fly, makes me cry. Their music should be prescribed to heal people's pain.

  • their sound reminds me of radiohead

  • after listening to this i m fine.

  • slithering state-what are you talking about? In the live spin version of this tune, you suggested people wouldnt understand this song unless they were in their twenties. Which is it?

To me the National speak to the post college experience. Life after college. When you have to sell your soul and work some soulless job. thats what the song is about and the band is about. The images are quite astounding. He psyches himself up for work, but "cant do this".

  • Never really heard these guys before but.. just by listening to this... I'm in

  • It's tough to identify one song as the National's best, but this one does it for me. I am glad they are getting the respect they deserve, and I am also glad I knew about them for the past decade.

  • They are great! But they are not the only ones with a full sound, and that are trying new things. Check out Radiohead sometime. They are amazing too.

  • @jerywilliams Who? Radiohead? Hmmm...never heard of them underneath this rock I live under. I live under a rock. What other music do you support? Have you ever heard of "piano?"

  • @timberbothy2 You must really live under a rock if you have never heard of Radiohead.

  • The National is a band that makes more sense to a listener that's 30 than one that's 20...and in a market saturated by bands who make the most sense to the experience of a 14 year old, I think that's a healthy thing, and something sadly missing from even remotely mainstream music since the mid-90's: the embrace of grace, poetry and maturity of musical craft.

  • @slitheringinterstate I don't know about their music making more sense to the 30 year olds.. I'm 20, and I think it does make much sense to me, and many of my friends who love this band's music. I don't think that enjoying quality music has anything to do with a certain age group.

  • @slitheringinterstate ehh i'm 14 and i love this band :/

  • @slitheringinterstate I'm 14 and i enjoy and understand their music very well.

  • Most innovative band since Radiohead OK Computer/KidA era

  • This studio version is good, but some of the live versions you can find online...especially the black and white one where that guitar spiral is more melodically ornamented and in total isolation in the beginning, is graceful beyond words.

  • The National is quite epic, especially because it's so... different! I mean, they have killer beats, with a singer who has a deeepp voice, it's like nothing you've ever heard! Way better than the crap rap that is out there now!

  • I just found this band, they are brilliant. The morbid and dark voice of the singer is perfect, and this song is the best thing to listen to when your down. Beautiful. I have nothing else to say.

  • @SharukhFMAlolrandom Use should listen to About Today by The National, it is probably the most beautiful and sad thing I have ever heard.

  • thank you haha. About today will be stuck on my head for about 4 weeks. I guess i have the national fever.

  • QQQQ I don't believe they sound much like Interpol at all.

  • The National have such a... FULL sound. They're doing things musically that no one else is right now. They have a sound all their own and are the best band in the current 'indie' scene.

  • you hit the nail on the head there.

  • @jesuslivesinmytoilet i love the national but i can't go so far calling them the best i believe they are in the top 2 with arcade fire.

  • @jesuslivesinmytoilet They have a gift, of 'THE ONE'

And they are using it great ;P

  • @jesuslivesinmytoilet That's because they have John Lennon in the drums xP

  • @jesuslivesinmytoilet I think it's rather arrogant to say that no one else is doing things like this, if, perhaps, you can even define what it is The National, a great band, is doing that others aren't. Two respectable bands I can think of that are doing things similar would be WIRE and TV On The Radio (pre-Dear Science, of course).

  • @KingOfUm i think its safe to say we all have our opinions and if he/she feels like what they are doing is completely different then anything else, than they have the right to think that.

  • @hillzyworm1 That's not really what I said; he/she was trying to say that The National are doing what no one else is; that's not even the statement of an opinion.

  • @KingOfUm thinking that "The National are doing what no one else is" is an opinion. its the way that person views their music.

  • @hillzyworm1 But the person WASN'T just stating his/her opinion. People do this on youtube ALL the time; they put whatever band they like on a big pedestal and say stuff like: 'BEST... BAND... EVER', or 'most under-rated group ever', or 'nobody is doing anything like this group' etc etc etc.

See what I'm trying to say yet?

  • @KingOfUm yeah. i just dont see whats wrong with that.

  • @hillzyworm1 I know it's fruitless to complain about grammar on the internet, but that's what it is, all about grammar. With that said I think you still don't get my initial point, but it really doesn't matter anyway.

  • @KingOfUm I clearly see what your trying to say. and by the way, me not wanting to type correctly on the internet doesnt mean I'm lacking comprehension. :) Nice talking with you.

  • @hillzyworm1 "you're"

  • @ClassicRocknRolla3 really?

  • magnificent music

  • I just found this band but I think out of all the songs, this is their best

  • my favorites would be mistaken for strangers and apartment story

  • mr. november and the runaway

  • love this song

  • This is such a great song. They are such a great band. Their lyrics make you think...

  • love it!

  • best of their songs.

  • fantastic

  • The national 8/8 Gothenburg <3 I'll be there

  • I saw them yesterday! They were so goooooood!

  • must be the best one from The National.
