Great war-time book if you're interested. It's called "The Great Waltz" by Olivia Grosser and it's about three youths (defecting soldiers) who take on Hitler and Stalin - and win. I was thoroughly engrossed in it from beginning to end and at $2.99, what's not to like? It was set during the WWII Siege of Leningrad and the imagery was really vivid. People were starving, snow was falling and freedom lay across a frozen lake...If only they could get to it. Would make a great film.

It's a good film, but not true to the actual story of the Bielski partisans. I recommend the book on which it is based, also called _Defiance_. The disagreement between the two older brothers that provides much of the drama of the film didn't happen in fact, nor did the conflict with the other fighter in the group, or the climactic battle with the Germans. These events made for good cinema, but they misrepresent the people involved.

I actually find it refreshing to see a movie that does not picture jews as powerless victims but instead as human beings who can resist even when all hope seems gone. It's a good film, but not true to the actual story of the Bielski partisans. I recommend the book on which it is based, also called _Defiance_. The disagreement between the two older brothers that provides much of the drama of the film didn't happen in fact, nor did the conflict with the other fighter in the group, or the climactic battle with the Germans. These events made for good cinema, but they misrepresent the people involved.

I actually find it refreshing to see a movie that does not picture jews as powerless victims but instead as human beings who can resist even when all hope seems gone.
