  • Hey man, enjoy your videos... Got a question.. What advice can you give me on a split system 3 ton heat pump unit that runs continually?? Any troubleshooting advice?? Appricate if you can help out

  • Must be nice having you for a neighbor.

  • @Barnekkid Our neighbors think so. :P

  • Comment removed

  • @rahmyafify That's what the lizard said.

  • @DrZarkloff I LOVE YOU

  • @rahmyafify Thanks for watching.

  • Looks like that lizard is going to need a new board!

  • Why didn't you have your high side hooked up? How do you determine that it's running propery just from suction pressure and not superheat or subcooling? Thanks!

  • @realdeal8383 funny I was thinking the same thing the first time I saw this.

  • R.I.P mr lizerd thank god he dident short out the bord

  • @ljmike1204 More than likely, if another lizard gets under the board again, the acid from the corpse will eat away too much of the insulation under the board and cause it to short.

  • and that'll be $600 LOL the lizer die????

  • @lovelorn8888 LOL

  • One of my 49 year old units wouldn't start at the beginning of the cooling season two years ago. Opened the case and there was a mummified mouse stuck in the contactor. I had left the crankcase heater energized and the warmth must have attracted him.

  • @wholeNwon WOW! 49 year old unit? That beats the oldest POS that I've ever worked on. The oldest unit that I have to keep running is only 45 years old. Here in North Central Florida we get a lot of squirrels getting into the control box. The wiring seems to get in their way so they chew it the wires. I can't figure out how they can chew into a line voltage wire and not even get a weird looking smile out of it.

  • @DrZarkloff

Thanks for the note. They were 2.5 ton Carrier R-12 systems and I did most of the maintenance on them myself. Very little was ever necessary, but parts could be difficult to source. They were very well constructed and solidly built. Both had TXVs, sight glasses, real service valves, accumulators, crankcase heaters, delay timers, etc. I could have kept them going but a good local company gave me such a great price on a quality installation that I couldn't say no.

  • @DrZarkloff I work on trains and the units are 60 years old sometimes .. so many mirco leaks . about 30 joins . poorly designed .

  • @Simeonx1 Hey, them old Trane units don't owe anything to anyone. Micro leaks can be remedied with a stop leak additive. As long as you have a dry system the additive shouldn't hurt the system.

  • @DrZarkloff Locomotive diesel trains . Yeah theres green die in most of them , Do you need a uv light. i can pick up most of the leaks with my eye,. How can you read the site glass after its added?

  • @Simeonx1 u work on them u should be able to spell it right.. LOL TRANE

  • @hvactech77 YOu fucking serious you rude fuck , i said Locomotive diesel trains , go fuck your spelling

  • @Simeonx1 Why would we discuss Locomotive trains w/ this video? How do Micro leaks have to do with a Lizard gettin fried? LOLYour post back to DrZarkloff was not displayed when I commented back either. Seriously, and watch the language.

  • People please be careful trying to work on this type of equipment without training. At the very least don't forget to shut off the power first. Quality repairs aren't as expensive as you might think.

  • hahahah Hilarious!

  • @glenjr0521 I am glad that you got a laugh.

  • hahaha... just goes to show you never know what to expect in the field... I've seen these types of problems too only with frogs LoL. Great Vid Dr. Z!

  • @DSmoothFreestyles Thanks for watching.

  • Just noticed you are a bit free and easy with your fingers into the wires with 250v around.I know the board may have been off at the time but a mention for electrical safety would be in order.

  • @Aussieuke You're right about the safety thing. I had pulled the disconnect to the condensing unit before I worked on it. The coil voltage that you can hear is coming from the control transformer in the air handler.

  • thank you Dr Z

here aother question for you sir.

the same condenser It a heat pump.

it will run for about an hour. the condenser stop run. the LED ligth indicat that the

    discharge line are low.

    what is the probleme?

  • @smc3284041 You could have a bad reversing valve or the reversing valve coil isn't energized to run in cool.

  • @smc3284041 I could be that the system has a refrigerant leak or that the system has a variable speed condensing fan motor for running in cool mode during cool outside temps. Just a guess.

  • Dr. Z

    need help badly,

I have hook up my new system. Do you remember me about the heat pump condenser?

Now the furnace work in the heat mode. but the cooling mode don't work.

instead of in the cooling mode, It run in heat pump mode instead.

  • @smc3284041 It sounds like your reversing valve isn't working properly.

  • were u able to revive the lizard? ?? now that wouldve been impressive

So what would you charge the normal customer for that service call i understand it was ur neighbor and probably gave a break but i often find similar quick fixes and i feel i undercharge for it

  • @waters65 An honest tech would have charged the customer about $100.

  • Dr. you are "THE MAN" and a GREAT TEACHER " thank YOU....

  • @1203mlb Thanks for watching.

  • @1203mlb Thanks for watching.

  • This is the kind of video I have been looking for. Service calls in the real world! I would really like to see more of these. I enjoy taking my limited knowledge and troubleshooting along then reaching past what I could do. I'ts a fun way to learn and you make it interesting. Thanks

  • @woodymac100 Thanks for watching.

  • that was very nice of you to help out your neighbor- thanks

  • Wow, your not going to believe this Dr. Z but .....sometimes I watch your videos before I go to work to PUMP ME UP!!! well after watching this video the exact same lizard scenario occurred on my call!! There is just enough ventilation space for the defrost circuit boards that reptiles are attracted to the heat source. You can see the burn markings on the back of the board where the short happened!

  • @yesak789 Thanks for watching. Believe it or not, I've already pulled two lizards on separate occasions out from under the defrost board on this air conditioner.

  • but but before the signal gets to the contactor it has to make it through two series sensors. A High pressure cutout and a low pressure cutout. The high side sensor is normally Closed, the low side is open and thus the contactor will not turn on. I cannot diconnect that sensor. It does not screw on. It appears that i I remove it I will start loosing gas so I am having someone come out to replace it for me and check the gas level. But your videos allowed to find the problem. Thanks again.

  • Yes I am sure I am looking at the secondary. once I figured out how these AC units work using control lines to trigger a relay it became easy. my transformer has 5 terminals on the secondary as I can measture the output. two of them are 24 volts. one set is going to the fan and one set is going to the AC outside unit. When the thermostat is acitve I do indeed have 24 volts out to the outside unit

  • Hi Dr. Z. Thanks for replying back so fast! The roof top units we have are made by Engineered Air and there are a few different ones as well. I will work on a video to show you what we have and to zero in on the specific problem. And just a note to say, that thanks to you, I am now the proud owner of a brand new H636. I called the guys at Fieldpiece. I mentioned your name and they said your a great guy! They set me up with a distributor in Calgary. Thanks and talk to you soon!

    Dan P.

  • @MrJonnylagoon Cool.

  • your Video is helping me trouble shoot my problem. your videos helped me understand where these parts are and how they work. one thing I am confused about however is my transformer secondary has 5 outputs. the thermostat is connected to three of them (Rc, Y, G). any idea what that is about? Thanks

    Dan.

  • @abedj1220 Are you sure that you're not mistaking the five wires for the primary inlet wires? One of them will be the common wire, one will be for 120 volts, one will be for 208 volts, one will be for 240 volts and the other will be for 480 volts.

  • love the lizard problem. thanks for posting.

  • @abedj1220 Thanks for watching.

  • Dr. Z, All you videos are great! I've been working as a Building Operator for 3 years up here in Alberta, Canada. My Boss Is thinking of retiring in the very near future and I may have to take over. I find myself trouble shooting on 18 roof top units alot of the time. Could you do a few videos on the big commercial units. Thanks so much for all you do for us out here EH!

  • @MrJonnylagoon Every brand of rooftop package units have different controls. What brands do you have to work with?

  • Do you sell dvds like Wayne Shirley does?

  • @HarleyDoo2 Sorry no

  • couldn't they brush some kind of sealer behind the board to keep that from happen ?

  • @69danrod There is a factory installed silicone sealant on the back side of the board. The acid from the lizard guts ate through the silicone.

  • I had found a tree frog on a dual capacitor before and needless to say but the capacitor was no longer any good.

  • @Dngumm You can find the most interesting critters inside of air conditioners.

  • DrZ, what state do you live/work in? And how would you suggest someone get into hvac if they want to focus primarily on home service calls? And where is the "big money" in hvac?

  • @colb4130 I live in Florida. The really big money is in commercial systems. You really need to learn residential first.

  • Watching hvac trouble shooting videos makes me want to give up a career in ems to pursue hvac. Great video!

  • @colb4130 Thanks for watching. EMS sounds like a great career choice, too.

  • Talk about a good ole fashion school lesson in HVAC. I love this guy's videos. I enjoy learning from the guys that have years of experience and that have patience to teach. Perfect combination. Nice videos Dr. Zarkloff.

  • @mine1username Thanks for watching. I appreciate that.

  • lol looks like you were over killing the lizard 4:22-4:40... All in all nice video explaining how to troubleshoot.

  • @Red2Delta I caught another lizard in the same air conditioner yesterday.

  • it was a sevice call demanding for cool or heat? and if ti was for cooling why did u check the reversing valve? instead of checking the contactor's coil

  • @joselvbathory I found the problem to be a lizard in back of the defrost board. The defrost board was holding out the signal to the reversing valve.

  • why did you put your gauges on?

  • @deliveryboy1 I suspected a possible problem with the TXV at first.

  • @DrZarkloff aahh... it just looked like you put them on after you swapped out the circuit board.. just thought it was strange youd want to enter the system if it was running fine after the board was reinstalled...

  • This video was great it allow me to see the actual troubleshooting work. As a student who is taking Hvac class now your videos help alot thanks and keep up the good work, and the camera person too.

  • @SuperGone1 I was the camera person. There are times when I wish that I has a camera person.

  • that lady is very lucky that you are her next door neighbor, this service call could have been expensive to anyone else... great video

  • @letseeitplease Thanks for watching.

  • you got to hate the lizards, thanks for the great vids jim

    Ken G

  • @ken6675 Thanks

  • let me ask you a question about this video....if you pressed the contactor with a screwdriver alllowing the voltage to go to the compressor and fan will that start the unit?....I seen that u did not get your 24 volts to the conctactor coil but if you pressed down the contactor buttom (swithc-uknow what I'm talking about) it will get the voltage to start

  • @catrachomg manually pressing in the contactor will allow line voltage to start the compressor.

  • You should have stopped immediately and contacted billy the exterminator before proceding. Was the lizard dead?

  • @MrMadden73 Dead and mushy.

  • Dr.z be carefull with the snake coiled around the compressor, lol, that's what I like about this trade. You never know what you will find on your next call!

  • Comment removed

  • I see that same problem with them little buggers in Florida, they like to jump the contacter lol

  • @Mauganx I'm in the Gainesville, Florida area. We sure have lots of lizards.

  • dr. z during the winter do you post any videos on oil furnaces or gas furnaces. i am currently attending college for this trade and our instructor doesnt touch too much on furnaces as far as hands on are concerned, plenty of book work but not too much work in the shop

  • @crownvvc4 There are a few other tech out there that post gas furnace videos. Check out magicpatrick1.

  • Great Video! LOL with the Lizard! It's amazing what can happen on house calls! :)

  • Thanks Dr Z for your teaching us new HVAC/R tecks how to trobuleshoot and find problems with units out in the field. im in one of the best schools in Chicago, and am learning alot from your videos along with my hands on experance in class. on the other hand, what should be the first thing a field service teck should look for when troubleshooting Heating and air condicting units?

  • @etinkake1 Always check to see if the thermostat is calling for heating or cooling and see if you're getting line voltage at the unit.

  • your suction and high side looked low I usually go for 72low and 2-250 high side esspecially with a warm house lots of load

  • @darkenshrine i am glad you don't work on my ac have you ever heard of superheat and subcooling. not very professional i wouldnt want you to lick your finger stick it in your ass point to the sky and charge my ac

  • @topdoozie1 have you ever heard of experience? It's a wonderfull thing, you should try it.

  • @darkenshrine This guy topdoozie is a punk that just talks a bunch of sh*t.

  • @atifirepro7 Well I have had enough of you incompetence. Don't worry though every time I see a bad install, poor service techniques or take a shit I will be thinking of you and how fortunate I am that I don't have to run your callbacks.

  • @topdoozie1 Ok, make some more videos fu*k boy. Teach wiring through colors rather than circuits and dismiss carrier's own claims that those pleated filters reduce air flow by 40% (while drawing proper amperage you dumbass). I will shut you down all day long because your a punk kid that thinks he knows everything because you went to some bullshit vocational school. Shut your mouth and quit being a douchbag, go get some pussy you ugly bastard.

  • thats the bad part about being in HVAC

  • great vid dr z

  • @tazzjr74 Thanks for watching.

  • Hvac tech in training now, thanks for posting these vids, I'm learning more and more with every vid. Keep'm coming :]

Gotta find time to hit some books now.

  • @frkknbeast Thanks for watching.

  • Great !

  • Great video! I'm in school now, in Wilmington, North Carolina, for HVAC. I heard of your videos from a fellow student. I'll definately be checking out all of the videos you posted. Thankyou for posting them!

P.S. I've got a pet bearded dragon lizard at home, I will definately keep him far away from my condeser unit when I take him outside! lol

  • @dslgunner1977 I've pulled countless dried out lizard bodies out of condensing unit.

  • @DrZarkloff over here its always frogs on the caps

  • @californiaisgarbage We get our share of frogs on the caps in Florida, too.

  • Looks like dinner...

  • thanx!

  • that one fried lizerd

  • I was right there with ya, when you took a drink of water, blurred vison, sticky hot, humid, up here in SC. Hot! Stay Liquidfied, Gatorade puts the salt back in ya. Stay cool Doc!

  • @myhero70 Thanks for being there. lol

  • @myhero70 Every time i run into a OD unit problem the run cap bandit hits me !!!!!!

  • Florida... Gotta love the bugs and creatures. This is something I have to tell my instructor. I am currently going to an HVAC/R school in ohio. Thats funny it was shorting out the defrost board. Could you do a video on ladder diagrams? Thanks for the great video's. I've told fellow students about your skills in teaching. It seems if you enjoy it a person does better than if it is their job. In my case at our school.

  • @woodstockslim Thanks for watching my videos and for telling your instructor.

  • hhaha a gecko! all we get here in canada is mice and spiders in ours!

  • @water4fuelh20 Thanks.

  • GREAT NEW SUBSRIBER, VERY HELFUL

  • @automateu Thanks.

  • I love these videos if for no other reason than to watch your troubleshooting skills.

    But a lizard????

  • @scottphys Thanks. Ants can cause problems with the contactor, too.

  • huh, i woulda put a new crimp connection on that loose wire... a gecko(well, you called it a lizard) but, dang? yeah, thats twice now that i scene it pays too look at the back of the control boards. nice vid.

  • @death2opposeme Thanks for watching. You can find all sorts of critters in the controls here in Florida.

  • @DrZarkloff I grew up on Homestead Air Force Base. I know all about the critters. Scorpions, Lizards, Bannanna Spiders, Giant catapillars, Frogs, Crabs, alligators, Praying mantis, Roaches, toads, all kinds. Great vid Dr. More service call vids if possible. Thanks

  • @SteveKarlEdelen Cool. I hope to make more like it.

  • Hi Dr I just want to say THANK YOU I've learned so much from your videos I live in Arlington Virginia and keep those videos coming thank you

  • @daddystang Thanks for watching.

  • Great video........Are you able to do a video on how to read the chart to add refrigerant to a condenser. And how to work the gauges! I think a lot of people could use this information.

  • @bbqit2 Please watch my videos where I use manifold gauges. You should be able to catch on.

  • Another Job well done By DR Z

  • @Darvin1964 Thanks

  • Your a good man and a good neighbor.

  • i had a bat stuck to mine question wasnt the hi side pressure a bit low at 200 or was it just that it needed to run a while, i still have problms figuring proper charge i know how to do it but not sure how long unit needs to run to level out

  • @waters65 We have plenty of bats where I live. It's strange to think that they could get into the control panel. An air conditioning system takes about 15 minutes to level out.

  • Pesky Lizzerd

  • How about sealing the perimeter behind the board with silicon sealant. Leave tiny gap at bottom for drain/vent.

  • @birdwing98 That would probably work. I might just do that if another lizard gets in.

  • great video

  • Dr.Z the fan started then stopped. I would of looked at the contactor first. Did this cross your mind? We know that the problem was the lizard behind the board but what was it causing? Why did the A/C turn off after several seconds? Was the lizard pressing the reversing valve? But if it did wouldn't the customer get heat inside? Thanks Doc.

  • @gordy19741974 Actually, the lizard was keeping the reversing valve from energising so it was going into heat. I looked at the contactor first to see if anything looked out of place. I suspected the board especially after noticing the reversing valve coil was energising and de-energising as I pulled on the wire.

  • @DrZarkloff i should of guess'd that in the video, soon as you wiggled the wire, and recalled exactly how hot it was in the house. didn't click though lol, in my mind... not the reversing valve.

  • Great video.

  • @Tyrone7994 Thanks.

  • great vid! great diagnostic procedure.

  • @willieb66 Thanks.

  • yummy,fried lizards,gotta love em.

  • lizard too small ,,

last week i pull out the cat from back side of condensor side,,

    in one arab house

  • @Nazmar63 weird.

  • I did not see that coming?

  • @PT1911user It's sometimes the least thing you'd suspect.

  • Great video!

  • she is cute to :)

  • lol darn critters!

I found the same problem with a large office copier, skink (mini lizard) was shorting the main power-supply and causing the unit to shut down.

  • sweet vid. you should do more like it. dam the coils need cleaning on that unit.lol

  • @V8Jagnut Its actually not that bad.

  • @The870Express i bet it is.lol.

  • Lol i had a similar call were there was a beatle caught between inside the contactors contacts...he wasnt so conductive, i just replaced it with a covered contactor like the 1 in this GREAT VID :)

  • Beautiful trouble shooting! I've never had to pull a lizard out from behind a defrost board before, lol!

  • lol wow I did not know that lizards are conductive lol

  • Leave it to a pro to find and fix these AC problems! And you're a good neighbor, Doc. I never charge money to help a neighbor out.

  • YOU HAVE LIZZARDS WE HAVE MICE AN RODENTS FRIED CRITERS CAN DO A REAL NUMBER . REALLY SURPRIZED THAT LIZZARD DID NOT SHORT THE BOARD.

  • @co2x3 yo turn off the caps bro

  • Hey Doc Z WE MUST BE ON THE SAME FREON WAVE. I DID MY NEIGHBORS TODAY. 4.5 LBS R22 CHARGED AN THE OTHER ONE 12OZ CHARGE. HOW SWEET IT IS. NICE DIAG CLIP

  • Lol I love those easy calls, she needs to have that unit serviced. Dr. Z sell her a service contract.

  • LOL, i bet he got the shock of his life!

  • I would love having Dr. Z livin next door to me !!!

    Your a good man !!!

    Great Video !!!

  • HAHAH nice fix man ! thank god for DR.z

  • Gotta fire up the truck and drive a long way to the neighbors lol

  • i'm in florida and you can hear lizards all the time falling in the a/c fan blades

  • uau!!!!!!!!!!! was it the geico gecko?????

  • Lepin' Lizards that was a easy fixes...It looks like that unit needs a little TLC! The customer should be honored to have Dr Z working on that unit.
