  • Obviously he's going to trick it out and pick up chicks with it, why else would anyone want a starship?

  • best part of the movie--one of the few redeeming qualities in an admittedly quite-flawed star trek movie. fun part, though.

I think the most amusing thing is that it was Kirk asking the question, not the logical Spock. Then again, he was the only one who hadn't had his mind F'd over by Sybok by that point.

    Classic, love that part.

  • This is not an episode its a movie.. you trekies are noobs

  • That ISN'T GOD! It's a phony being that channels energy, but somehow gets destroyed by a few torpedoes

    It's nod God, people.

  • Atheist Experience

  • I love the ton of his voice when Kirk says, "I said, what does God need with a starship?"

  • @ProudAtheistIndiana Kirk ain't just gonna hand over the Enterprise to anyone. Even God himself. :)

  • Yeah, I know. He wasn't convinced of that when he said this, though.

  • Yeah, I know. From his perspective, though, that wasn't firmly established yet.

  • The religion of the director doesn't enter into it. The question stands, What does God need with a Starship? If God is Omnipotent, then why does he act as if he was limited? Who is limiting him? Is he limiting himself? Why does god work in mysterious ways? Why are his thoughts and motivations not made clear? What does God need with a Starship?

  • @ajones35 Does atheism frighten you? Also, this is from a movie, not an episode.

  • @3234718 No I just like to be entertained at the theater, not preached to. This Star Trek nothing but that and because it had an atheist message is no exception.

  • @ajones35 It's difficult to understand you without, ya know, proper grammar and syntax, but what I assume your point is: that this movie somehow preached atheism, is extraordinarily foolish.

  • @ajones35 Then you have not seen this "episode". This is hardly atheist stuff. Other than it has one moment where one guy doubts this guy is god. If you had seen this "episode" you would know it does have a religious message. Especially at the end.

  • @vomisacaasi "God exists in here" Is that supposed to overshadow all the other athiest stuff said in the script. not for me! :P

  • @ajones35 Actually it did not have an atheist message. This MOVIE was written and directed by William Shatner who is a devote JEW! Bill's point of the movie was that it doesn't matter if we ever find God the person in our life time; it is the quest that brings us closer to God. God is in all of us. You might say that Sybock looked for God and found the Devil and by finding the devil he proved that God exists.

  • @BondFreek Shatner is not a jew, he is an atheist and he acknowledges that publicly.

  • @ajones35 "Shatner is not a Jew" LOL It's a good thing He did not here that! Try this video made by Shatner for the Holyday season, "William Shatner - Funny Jewish Commercial" here on YouTube. And next time do your research before you decide to make an ass out of yourself!

  • @BondFreek Wrong!!! He is Jewish by bloodline but he does not practice the faith. You need to do your research instead!! Pfft Bwahahaha

  • @ajones35 Judaism is a religion not blood line! Num nuts! Also your research is incomplete and 10 years out of date!!! Did you watch the video? By your moronic reply I can tell the answer is no. WATCH THE VIDEO! Again it's called "William Shatner - Funny Jewish Commercial"!

  • @ajones35 Bondfreek is right. Shatner loved his faith when he made Star Trek V and he returned to practicing it about 3 years ago. Shatner always believed in God! Bill loves his animals and misses every single one that died. The only part of the Jewish faith he had trouble with was the idea that only people go to heaven.

  • @vomisacaasi Really? I would say it definitely carries a "God message". But I would say it carries a lot of other ideas too. Assisted suicide, free thinking, murder, trust in strangers, friendship, etc. I still think it had a weak but still underlying tone of God in the movie.

  • @ajones35 - Try watching the whole so-called "episode".

  • @A86 Watched it already its William Shatners handywork written all over it!

  • @ajones35 It was a movie. What are you even talking about?

  • I suppose they found satan or an evil alien in a prison planet

  • A quote from Captain Picard:

"Horrifying. Dr. Barron, your report describes how rational these people are. Millennia ago, they abandoned their belief in the supernatural. Now you are asking me to sabotage that achievement, to send them back into the dark ages of superstition and ignorance and fear? NO!"

  • @jtkirkfan2002

Plus I need solid evidence, facts, or proof before I believe in it. Btw I'm an atheist, there are some things that I'm just very skeptic about but I'm still pretty open-minded about other things as well.

  • 15 people don't get a starship!!!

  • I love Kirk's best boyscout face when he says 'excuse me'

  • @TheStarTreker Well, it's not a problem. As I cannot prove the stuff that I have experienced over the years, I couldn't expect you to believe me on the basis of blind faith. But the religious people expect you to follow them on the basis of nothing more than blind faith.

  • What they don't show is what happens next... God gets Old Testament on Kirk's ass. But Captain Kirk is such a badass that even God can't beat him;

  • One of the few I've never seen. WTF does God need with a starship?! Now I need to know!

  • @NucularRobit

He doesn't. That's just an alien pretending to be god. But, now that I think about it, what does a non corporeal alien need with a starship? Can't he just... float away or something?

  • I love how Kirk's all calm when he asks the question, most people would flip out, but he keeps his cool

  • @Tarynus err, q would be a good example of how a good starfleet officer deals with a situation like this. you didn't see picard peeing himself when confronted with something apparently omnipotent, and sisko punched him in the face. (or course after being invited to do so, but he still did it)

  • @kght222 I'm not that huge a Trekkie (in fact, I'm not a Trekkie at all) but I loved hearing this quote being used, so I had to find it XD

That proves Q is not most people & good on Sisko for following orders LOL

  • @Tarynus i'm not a treker or whatever myself. what quote are you talking about? my reply was just stating that a good officer in starfleet wouldn't immediately think diety. they would instead like any man of science question. i simply don't understand your post. and i doubt sisko was following orders beyond "beware of q and his games" maybe. q set him up for old school fisticuffs match and sisko knocked him out. but that is because his name is benjamin sisko, middle name, don't fuck with the.

  • they should make a special edition of this..with all new sfx..and edit out all the bad gags..it would be awesome..

  • vomisacaasi Thanks, I think....

  • Now this god doesn't need a starship, But he does want it so he can brag to the other gods about how they have all these unique powers but do they have a bitchin Starship? I THINK NOT!!! >:D

  • @Idazmi7

When it only lives inside your head, it is still imaginary.

  • It's a fucking good question.

  • What a terrible, terrible movie. I liked Wrath though.

  • What does God need of a Starship? God is a deadbeat carjacker.

  • OMG..! Spock killed God...!!! Best Trek everrrr....

  • @nardigan Logic killed god. And for the record, Star Trek IV was the best.

  • OMG..! Spock killed God...!!! Best Trek everrrr....

  • What does god need with a starship? Just like weirdos who regard god (where applicable) as male. If god is male then god has a penis. What does god need with a penis? I'm really afraid to find out.

  • Captain Kirk meets God, and the first thing he does is sass back at him. You can't top that.

  • @salculd It's not God. It's a fake.

  • Jim, you don't question The Goddamn Batman!!!

  • Brilliant.

  • I love this movie!!!!

  • ...."and i shall make use of a starship."

    Shat: *raises finger* "Excusseeee me"

best interruption the Shat made on Star Trek

  • only kirk has the balls to ask what's supposed to be 'God' what he needs with a starship

  • This era of Shatner's wig was reallllllly bad.

  • 10 people have need of a starship

  • If knowledge is power...

    ... and power corrupts...

    and absolute power corrupts absolutely...

    ... then what is God?

  • @TheSonicGod The greatest evil.

  • Anyone remember the episode of TNG where Barclay becomes super Brainiac and brings the Enterprise to the center of the galaxy to meet a powerful entity?

I like to think Sybok's "God" here was a criminal from the same race and imprisoned. Both entities hae shown the ability to reach out to other races and affect their minds to give them the ability to bring them to where they are.

  • "Jim! You don't ask the almighty for his ID!"

  • @BlackScarabZ Nice.

  • I don't understand why people don't like this movie, I enjoyed it

  • Capt Kirk... you're the man!

  • Kirk is the only captain who crossed the Great Barrier, met God face-to-face, and wasn't even impressed!

  • The Bajorian answer to this, so he can visit his friends in the Prophet's wormhole.

  • @wd40isgreat Yeah... and that is part of why I can't fathom why DS9 is one of the most popular series.

  • @hirak99 Because the last few seasons against the Dominion was badass

  • @fireball897 Yeah, he clearly never took a Creative Writing course.

  • What Kirk REALLY wanted to say was "What the Fuck does God need with MY starship?!?!

  • gods answer would be Well im not all powerful. But i am all knowing! well kinda.. acually im some dude name joe who works at a use car lot now give me your spaceship!

  • @Terlin1466 I think you just described Santa

  • Wow, Captian Kirk said a totally logical question!

  • I was a Die Hard Star Trek Fan of the Original Series. It took until year 3 of the Next Generation to warm to that Show. Half of Deep Space Nine 7 Voyager were a Waste. That last series was just awful. Once again, Raw Hard Die Hard Action which people here on Earth like what we saw in Star Trek 11 is what brought the audiences in . Next Generation , like all the newer shows had "The Curse" of the Original Series to avoid. Each show tried to not be like TOS & Failed. They ended up copying TOS...

  • Star Trek 5's Opening was Great. But after that the Mountain Climbing scene should have been delayed after the Credits, so the New Starship Enterprise-2 could be seen in Mid-Battle with Multiple Klingon Warships taking a Heavy Beating and Dishing it out Just as Hard and Winning the Battle. Until she proves she has the "Right Stuff" On Screen for the Audience to see, then the she is the Enterprise in Name only. Without that , No Passion, No Pep and Vigor, Big Deal about her : ( Dull Movie.

  • @Roadracer987654321 The Enterprise-A did prove her metal in that movie and in Star Trek VI! But I do agree that Star Trek V should have been better!

  • @terrywest111 The Enterprise-2 Proving itself in Star Trek 5 was Mostly Conceptual. All it did was handle one Torpedo Attack at th end of the movie, and it got thru the Energy Storms at the " Center of the Galaxy..."

Which is nothing like what the First Enetrprise went thru in the Battle of the Mutara Nebula in Trek 2, Seven Years earlier. The Earlier Enterprise endured that Battle in the Nebula with no Shielding. The Stress from the Clouds was Damaging it's Hull and Airframe.

  • @Roadracer987654321 do you really care about this bullshit?

  • @roman14032 Not Really, Actually. You are Right. It is All B/S.

They Show us an Educated Uncorrupted World with No Greed, Deception,or Lies or Wars for Big Industry Profit, No Unemployment or even any Layoffs of any kind, with No Discrimination or even Reverse Discrimination. What Nonsense.. ......

  • An extremely good question.

  • Great scene! I actually kind of love this movie even though it was also kind of bad. It felt more like old Trek than a lot of the others (which admittedly were much more well thought out, better quality movies)

  • I am athiest

  • 328 people are atheists

  • @slyther2 does that mean, that you would believe in an entity, that cannot even travel without a ship, as an almighty being?

I would like to remind you that most SciFi fans are not atheist but rather reject classic conception of god.

  • @HiopX I'm a sci-fi fan though not a huge one and I do believe in God though I don't really belong to any religion. Me personally, there's a higher power up there that I believe I'll have to answer to

  • @SpockNation Especially since there is no god.

  • @SpockNation so he had some other guy write the book that says "Here you go. I'm awesome, you're not, and by the way, don't scew up" and somehow that changes things? sorry but I'm not following.

  • @Commandodude Now, I'm not going to wack you over the head with a Bible, or argue with you, because you're entitled to your own beliefs. But I will ask you this: would you be more inclined to believe in what the Bible says if God himself had claimed the glory for writing the book?

  • @SpockNation Uh, yeah, actually. If there was any evidence that it was something other than just another friggin' book, that'd be a big deal.

  • @Commandodude I do believe God wrote the entire Bible through men. "Divine inspiration" as I call it. Yes, it wasn't written in a day, and yes, it was written by many different people, over a large span of time. In fact, the Bible is mostly like a history book of the Israelites, and the history of Jesus.

  • I was under the impression that the Bible story of the issuing of the commandments involved god landing on mount sinai in his "chariot"...

  • Kirk did ask a valid question

  • @clemstevenson God can write. He put the Ten Commandments on the stone tablets. He just chose to write the Bible THROUGH man. It's like a carpenter hammering nails into a wooden board. He uses a tool (the hammer) to get the nails into the board, much like God uses man as a tool to do His will.

  • @SpockNation Then god was stupid. If you want to use a tool to hammer nails into wood. You use a hammer. Not a rock.

So, did God write the bible through every man that cobbled it together? Because you do know it wasn't written by one man right? Or when Jesus was alive? Did he help all those other men translate the bible? Every single time?

    I don't believe it.

  • @CommandoDude what if the rock works better?

  • @MrGodssonsatan You must never have had to hammer nails into wood then. With a hammer or a rock.

  • @CommandoDude haha the real funny thing is i jsut got home from building a frost wall and starting to frame ou the rest of the walls today =) no nail gun so everything was nailed by hand..

  • & he`s of course in the center of our galaxy.

  • I wonder if the line where Sybok says: "it'll be your chariot!" references Judges 1:19.

  • Because even God needs to use the men's room. ^_^

  • Best movie, line ever.......

  • This cracked me up up when I first saw this. LOL!

  • I guess it doesn't make it any more possible that god appears to us in the ezekiel chapter, visiting us in a space craft.

  • This is what I love about Kirk. Spock may be the smart guy, McCoy may have the heart, but when something needs to be said Kirk is your man. lol

  • @legalglitz CLASSIC KIRK no one better I will miss him

  • Shatner is god

  • @clemstevenson rofl your stupid

  • @pplus0440 Who cares?

  • @clemstevenson

    Quiet you! Logic is bad!

    who am I kidding, you're right =P

  • @CorvidDude I strongly sense that 'God' already has a fleet of star ships :) Whilst Star Trek is a popular fiction, I also have good reason to propose that William Shatner, himself, is aware of the reality.

  • Epic.

  • kirk didnt stutter, god

  • Even Kirk hates giving people (or Gods) rides. Man i hate that shit too. People need to get there own ride. LOL

  • you left out the best part.

McCoy: Jim! You don't ask the Almighty for his ID!

  • He wants to fly around in a sweet ride. Give him the damn ship.

  • The point was that this isn't God at all.

  • Kirk has a point. You'd think the Creator of the universe would be able to get around on His own.

  • @OneEyedJack1970 hey man dilithium crystal prices are insane right now so what if god wants to carpool.

  • Kirk just didn't want to share his ship with ANYONE.

  • @signa8 nope. Not with Decker. Not with Spock and Saavik. Certainly not with the space dock crew intent on decommissioning her. After going into withdrawls for the ten minutes after he destroyed the first Enterprise, he violenced the hell out of some Klingons to steal their ship. Not with Sybok. Not with God. Then not with that chump who had Enterprise B. I bet he'd try to steal Picard's ship too if he had the chance.

    What a selfish bastard! X-D

  • @brtshstel

Wow, I didn't think about it that deeply, but yeah, Kirk loves his ship a little too much. I should watch the intro to Generations again and see if he did anything directly to rip the hull off of B. I bet he had some hand in it.

  • Excellent question, Kirk....I'm sure there is a logical reason here somewhere. XD

  • Shortly after this, "God" zapped Kirk. Then Kirk torpedoed "God". Lol.

  • I can only begin to imagine Shatner's angst when the visual effects for these scenes came back from the fx house. Shatner: "Well it's ok the rockman didn't pan out because Bran Ferren said he cooked up some good fx for the faux god! Let's watch!" Shatner then calls up Associates and Ferren. Shatner: "Ferren, you filthy blood sucker! You completely missed the target! Do you hear me? Do you?" Ferren: "Unless you have more money, you're buried alive!" Shatner: "Feeerrrrrrreeeeeeeeen!"

  • You know, he has a darned good (great) point.

  • Well its not about what God needs. Its what he uses. We don't need a TV remote to turn the channel yet we create 1 for convenience. We don't need vehicles we can walk. Of course, when ur God u can do what u want. Kirk shouldn't question LOL.

But the bible does seem to elude that God and his angels use chariots of fire or Wheels in the middle of a wheel. Does God need these things. No, but does he need heaven? Does he need to create? Does he need to exist? Theres more to God then the spiritual.

  • What does the 'God' of religion have to do with "us", or the universe, or reality? Religion has given us the 'mythological' meanings of things rather than the 'etymological' meaning of things. This has fostered in people an unrealistic picture of what 'God" really is,, what the 'angels' are, and what 'heaven' really is. God as a holy ghost or spirit does not need a ship. God as a material ET probably needs a ship. If God is an ET, then who are we and what are we worshipping?

  • Even Kirk owns the god concept. This proves conclusively that there is no god. All religion is false. You fail.

  • @699backstab

Did you even WATCH the damn movie? At the end, McCoy asks, "Is God really out there?" Kirk informs him, "Maybe he not out there, Bones. He's right here." *Points to self*

Thus, Kirk proved the so-called 'god concept' by showing that HE is God.

  • @Charmolution I think he meant god lives within him and he is religious, isn't that more likely? (I haven't seen the movie or any Star Trek though)

  • @Charmolution But what does god need with a starship?

  • @gethsoftware

    It will be his chariot!

  • lol yeah why the hell does god need a starship?i guess he's into models and he's to bored to built one so he wanted theirs...lol

  • .....which just proves........smart deities dont need to be ethereal........smart dieties travel in Galaxy class space vessels!! "The only way to go!" After all........who needs to be ubiquitous when you have a trans warp drive?

  • Why does God need humans? they don't believe in life ,and like most people say ''who cares'' i say destroy everything, and every wicked one. Then there will be heaven on earth.

  • Shatner knows this is not God, because he knows that he himself the SHAT is god, haha haha haha (evil laugh)

  • Comment removed

  • 7 people are afraid to ask God questions

  • oh please... there is NO GOD. for real.

  • @deezvids thats your beleif.

  • @MrSherlockWatson YES IT IS.

  • @deezvids and I respect that.

  • If there is a God or not--and really it shouldn't matter, live this life first and to its fullest, since you only get one, and worry about an afterlife after death--but I agree...

If there's a God--what does he need with a starship?

And a House? And money? And a book?

And people KILLING EACH OTHER over that book?

Faith is a beautiful thing--so let your fellow man believe what he wants, and you do the same...in your own homes, with your own money, no wars!

So sayeth God, er, Kirk! ;)

  • What does God need with a star ship? What does God need with a book (e.i. the Bible)?

  • The God´s real name is George Murdock, well in this movie anyway.

  • Of course God could trap himself. And then he could free himself. Since he is God and can do anything. As a human can. You can trap yourself by handcuffs. Then you can take the key and unlock them and release yourself. I think the bigger issue is, how many humans would dare ask the question that captain Kirk asks?. That is the good about many people that they do not just except what its said and what it sees they also question it.

  • Comment removed

  • LMAO @ Kirk at 0:06!! "Um, excuse me..." xD

  • Kirk: What does god need with a starship?

God: God needs a starship to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before....(god winks at the camera)

  • @BonScottAC Sad part is? That' joke dialogue is more well-written than the entire run of Enterprise.

  • @BonScottAC lmao that is so corny but funny.

  • @BonScottAC AWESOME LOL!!!

  • SGU needs to ask this question.

  • The ONLY truly awesome moment in the film...

Shatner, you nearly killed the movie franchise (and perhaps all of Trek) with this film, it's horrible, it was an OK idea, Enterprise looks for God, but it was just so awful...and you made Chekov, Sulu, and Uhura look like jerks and idiots when they were right at Kirk's side in his adventures, it was just AWFUL...

But this line...doesn't make up for it, but at least it's something...

Keep on Trekking, folks! (Right on to Trek VI!) :)

  • @obiwanobiwan13 lol... great review / advice.

  • @obiwanobiwan13

Lol, it's strange but this is the only Star Trek movie I haven't seen so far... I keep hearing how bad it is but I guess I'll have to watch it some day. On a side-note I think that VI and VIII were my favorites.

  • @AnotherSchmoe What about II? That was the BEST of Star Trek. Who can beat KHAAAAAN and the beautiful scene at the end?

  • @StoneKnivesBearskins

Oh yeah, don't know how I could forget about Khan. =)

I enjoyed IV as well, it was sillier but still very enjoyable. It seems the even-numbered Treks came out best, up until Nemesis.

  • @AnotherSchmoe What! How could anybody forget about Khan? He is the best villain ever created, and (SPOILER) Spock's death scene is the most beautifully done in the universe.

I guess I'll forgive you, since you eventually remembered. LOL

  • hilarious... ^^
