  • Eurgh, I hate diva's.. Think they own the production they're in. If I was producer I would have kicked her out, no matter how talented she was, which she hasn't a lot of unfortunately.

  • wow she definitely stood her ground as the original FANTINE there was alot of people who has followed here character like RUTHIE at the DREAM CAST concert then SUSAN who has graced us with her version then there's LEA from the 25th anniversary with her heart wrenching version but all of them did amazing but PATTIE LUPONE 'S original version of the song still gives the character and the song a deeper meaning its like you've been through FANTINE'S shoe in the show thats how i adore her version...

  • Oh gosh the last part got me so bad..... I feel like crying...

  • Wow, first she makes you laugh and then she starts sining and makes you forget about the funny anecdote, you suddenly feel the chills

  • "True to form, I had only read my part." Haha love her so much! :)

  • This woman is a total diva. And I love her for it. She is hardcore, and while sometimes I roll my eyes at her attitude and antics, she's fucking amazing and I adore her. Patti is Patti. Ya either love her or hate her, but she isn't fake and doesn't compromise herself. Ya gotta respect her for that!

  • omg, she's hilarious :))))))

  • 1:45 did anyone else think, Fran Drescher?

  • she sang this better in london, shes fucking hilarious tho!

  • Oh Patti , love love love . Such an inspiration. !!

  • She is THE original Fantine. No one does it better....

  • i had no idea she could sing

    never woulda guessed

  • @Zaxxon2008 Please tell me your being sarcastic.

  • @Espeonpwnsuall no serious... seen her on Law & Order, maybe on OZ on HBO... never a medium where she could really belt it out like this!

after seeing this that night i had a semi-xxx dream about here LOL

  • I love this woman! She is everything I want to be. Goodness gracious.

  • I think she was reading "Interview" magazine with main story about Madonna the U.S. pop singer.

  • Oh give me a break, Susan Boyle did great on this song. But, Patti was the original voice that became what millions new of Fantina from Les Miz. She was the first to ever perform the part of sing the songs. Love Her or Hate her (I personally adore her) She is the first Fantina, and even Susan on the Today Show gave her that credit and respect. Why can't we?

  • She is so awesome!

  • she is so completely silly :) i love her. I want to see her in concert because she is very silly and very good at her singing like in a evening with patti and mandy ahhh good times :)

  • I think everyone should take a moment to notice 1:10

    love it

  • There's a video of this same skit but it's a little funnier the way she says it in the other one. But this one has a better picture

  • does anyone know where one can find a copy of the Patti LuPone PBS Special? I would SO LOVE IT!

  • I saw this years ago when first broadcast on PBS. Gave me a whole new respect for Ms. LuPone.

  • If ever I could be like any Broadway performer.. I would want to be exactly like LuPone. She is the epitome of what a real actress is. Classy, gorgeous, and incredibly talented. I am so in love with this woman. :)

  • got the last phrase where she is talking/singing could bring me to tears.. she is stunning...

  • I love Patti!!! She's so wonderful and such skill vocally. I just saw her live with Mandy Patinkin. They were amazing!!

  • she is so funny

  • Wow -- you gotta love her. I got goosebumps at the end. This isn't like the Broadway version -- it's more soulful. It's also just her and a piano, not a full symphony orchestra -- the arrangement can change the vocals dramatically sometimes. Still, she's amazing!

  • Love the gown!!!!

  • Patti is a tremendous talent but I have mixed emotions about this particular rendition of "I dreamed a dream".

However -just look at her- what you see is a real woman, not a doe-eyed angelic ingenue. You see potent emotion and earthy delivery not the whispering of some wispy waif.

  • you guys have NO idea what REAL talent is if you think this is bad. get some class.

  • Awards have nothing to do with talent. Look at all the talented actors and actresses who have never won an Oscar, Grammy, Emmy or Tony.

  • Yes but not too long ago it actually meant something and it was real tallent who actually won one of those awards...sometimes those awards committees get it right and they got it right with Patti LuPone so much that they honored her twice!!!

  • the woman is hysterical...

  • she is!

  • i couldn't agree more!

  • Her impression of Colm Wilkinson is SO FUNNY!

  • SO TRUE!

  • When you are nominated for 4 tonys, win two of them, and become the FIRST American EVER to win a Olivier (for THIS role btw) then, and ONLY then can you criticizes the wonderful amazingness that is Patti LuPone

  • AGREED.

  • Disagree. In my opinion, Patti LuPone is fabulous, but anyone may criticize any performance. Why not? It's like saying you can't have an opinion about politics until you've been elected. The New York Times critics haven't won Tonys either, they just know a lot about theater.

  • I agree!

  • Amazing ! Stoning ! Thank u susan to have made know the Miz... Music from Claude Michel Schonberg... french composer that I use to listen in the eighties when I was young and unfrayed. Sorry for my poor english. Fayçal

  • "She's amazing and she has such a great sense of humor"

  • okay....bottom line. patti lupone could get up on stage and FART, and walk off....and nearly the whole audience would still give her a standing ovation. i know i would....

  • But it would be the most eloquently delivered FART in theater history..

  • Well if her butt sings like she does, I wouldn't be surprised.

  • @tiernan87 Patti LuPone is one of about 5 women, I'd say, who I'd pay full price to watch them do that...and not feel at all short-changed. Bernadette Peters, Donna Murphy, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth and LuPone. They all just rock my world.

  • love her!

  • OMG she's amazing! Love her!

  • I had no clue she smoked!

  • she does not anymore, she wears a patch from time to time though.

  • Maybe the audience freak-out happened because she was moody from not having a cig in so long?

Haa Patti is such a sassy diva, and I love it.

  • she still does sometimes i think. but yeah shes so fiesty.

  • She is such a fabulous story teller. Hialrious...

  • I adore Patti, but I don't understand why she waited until 6:29 to step into character.

And what's with the monotonic recit Patti? Compared with Ruthie Henshall, it's like you're "just trying to get past that bit."

It's almost like she STILL can't stand singing this.

  • I agree... I DO love Patti, but her response at 6:29 seemed to come from no where. There wasn't an adequate emotional build up before that. This is my fav song and i was disappointed by the performance.

  • well theres only so much you can get into a song with just a piano like this, if it was a full orchestra behind her there would be a different kind of energy behind her

  • Wow totally overrated as an actress. What's with the overacted tantrum at 6:29?

  • yea shes really a amateur you retard.

  • this is the same spiel she always gives before this song, same actions and everything. but believe me....i LOVE it!

  • She is hilarious!

  • The devastation in her voice at the end is very moving...I think this song would have been perfect for Judy Garland or in it's original french by Edith Piaf....too bad we'll never hear that.

  • Great to listen Patti Lupone...Any one knows Lea Salonga's rendition of same song...Clear One?

  • Was she talking about "pick up a Modonna issue of Interview Magazine" at 1'29''?

And what's word she used after "which was ???"

    Thank you!

    I'm not a Eng speaker.

  • "which was pretty chatty." meaning lots of good gossip..."juicy!"

  • thanks!

and what was that at 2:52, to me, it sounds like "true to form", but it doesn't make sense.

  • @johnwgo "pick up the Madonna issue of Interview Magazine" means she was reading a magazine about Madonna.

  • I love that Patti lets us always see HER

  • Patti articulates and emotes like no one.

  • one of the best vocalists of the last century. love her

  • It's like comparing all the rockers that have come around with Elvis. It's just plum silly. Patti was the original Fantine, whether you like her better than Susan or not is a moot point. She gave Susan a huge compliment, and that should say worlds about Patti.

Patti has been known to be a fire cracker so it's possible that the story happened. It's fun, she's a hoot if you listen to any of her other skits here. Susan is great, but you can't compare her to Patti.

  • Better than Susan.

  • No no I still like Patti better than Susan Boyle.

  • "So different from this hell I'm living

So different now from what it seems"

Patti seemed not singing the words above as clearly as other parts in the song.

  • Boring, .Patti's version

Susan Boyle has saved this song.

  • Susan Boyle this and Susan Boyle that. Videos like this are just performances. Videos from the actual shows actually have the feeling in them. And smoking and being naked in dressing rooms? That's not the worst things that have happened during a theatre performance. Get over yourself. As long as you end up enjoying the performance, what does it matter?

  • Well put.

  • @NewNickTahoe thats what she said

  • I was shocked when i heard patti say she did those things because she has always seemed so professional. She has said that she loved doing Lez Miz.

  • I think it's important to remember that she does the same show night after night with a large wait between her entrances. Imagine going to see les Mis every night for months! I think you'd get tired after a while.

To be honest I think much of Susan Boyle's success has come from the audience unfairly underestimating her. She gave a good performance, but I do think Patti gives a better rendition.

  • I wonder how any stage actor or singer stands doing the same thing night after night for year.

It must be like being a civil service clerk except it pays better.

  • Susan brought me here...and I'm going back to her!

  • i 2nd that...for some reason with all the professionalism...i just don't hear the shock that Susan has brought me

  • The enunciation of each word is superb. You can hear and recognize each and every word.

  • Patti did a good job, but Susan's voice talent is just better IMHO. Besides, Susan's look just gives another facet of the song in the most beautiful way.

  • Patti Lupone clearly tells a story wonderfully. I love it when singers talk to the audience during their concerts.

    Great performance!

  • This may be Patti LuPone's song- meaning her version is the standard, BUT Susan Boyle nailed it... Think about it- she is an unpolished, untrained amateur, who even had Patti LuPone giving her kudos...

  • True enough, this woman has training and more polish; but as for pure raw talent and vocal quality, Susan Boyle has it hands down. I totally loved her very fresh debut. Imagine: her AUDITION was before a huge live audience. Well done, Susan!!!

  • Susan Boyle is in elementary school. Patti is in college. I wish best of luck for Susan but, please don't even try to compare Susan to Patti.

  • i agree. though lupone and henshall i think are more like 'finished-university-with-a-masters-degree-in-professionalism' lol.

  • Patti you are good but susan boyle has sang this song better than any person I have ever heard sing this song.

I can't wait for susan to record this song.

  • she is amazing...

  • Susan Boyle brought me here from Manila, Philippines.

  • when Susan sings this in a studio it will sound better then this. bank on it.

sue sang this with people clapping and noisy this is quit but what I heard sue in a closed studio and blows this away

  • I have known Patti for about 15 years.........in the old days we both smoked.

  • So, Cowell manufactured a tv hit in Susan Boyle. Well, at least she can eat for a while, feed Pebbles some Friskies, or is it feed some Friskies to Pebbles. Pay off her house, and enjoy her remaining years. This is the first time I heard the song from Ms. Boyle. If Patti gave her credit, accept it at that. Life for the majority of us has had a wonderful week and were able to cry and forget the "Hell in which we are Living" This song is an exact replica of my life. Thank you Susan, et al..

  • LuPone's really is the master of this song.

She has such a magnificent voice of such depth and feeling.

So many other versions of this song on youtube sound hammy and contrived or really miss the yearning and sadness.

Only Susan Boyles version's gets anywhere close to this and Lupone has sung better versions of it then this.

  • I would like to hear Susan sing the entire song..also I would love to her Kirstin Chenoweth sing it as well..such beautiful voices all

  • and here's one you can put in your pipe and smoke....."the manufactured" Ms Boyle sang it far better , IMHO.

  • I wonder if some people listen to the crap they write !!! I guess not, they are too manipulated.

  • copy and paste if you are a SHEEP

Ms Boyle deserves no less credit for going on stage as the literally 10s of 1000s of people who do it every year in search of becoming a performer. BUT NO MORE

People, this is NOT reality. Cowell's the PRODUCER-he approves EVERYTHING-So he was "shocked" by her performance? Please, get a grip. you are being manipulated.

Ms Lupone's one of the greatest theatrical voices to have ever sung on a stage. Boyle's brave, not a great singer, she's a manufactured TV hit

  • Susan did a GREAT job! However, Patti is the Queen of Broadway...

  • After I saw the interview in which LuPone congratulated Susan, I wanted to listen to LuPone's version. She said that the ending was the most difficult part and that Susan did great (my words as to how I remember what she said).

copy and paste if susan boyle brought you here

  • Patti LuPone during an interview of Susan on CBS.

RODRIGUEZ: Where does her rendition rate?

    LUPONE:

    . . .

And then, I mean, I was really -- I started to cry. I thought, I really, she -- Susan is -- has so much courage, and such pluck, really.

RODRIGUEZ: How is that for an endorsement, Susan?

    BOYLE: That will do.

    (LAUGHTER)

Both of them are class acts!

  • I think Patti's is more theatrical if that makes sense. Susan could give her a run for her money but Patti's is better. I like Susan's phrasing better though.

  • As any working actor can tell you, these YouTube clips are just a glimpse into a performance. These clips capture one night's performance...one night out of hundreds, sometimes thousands of an actors performances. To judge an actor's entire portrayal by one video clip is absurd. Remember, these perormances were meant to be viewed one time..live..and not dissected over and over via video.

  • Susan is actually dreaming a dream, her dream. She is not a professional and was singing live to a backing tape! Patti is a professional. Susan's version has meaning and for that I like it better. I bet she's not sick and tired of hearing the score!

  • Susan brought me here and her performance still stands out from among the pro's.

  • she's all breathy. not what i was expecting. this is not my favorite part for her...odd. i love her, but maybe i'm just so used to listening to other versions. it's just not as powerful as all the other versions, like she's missing a lot of support at places...weirdddd. hmmm maybe that's the reason why ruthie was picked for the concert recording?

  • Patti LuPone.......exquisite as always. There's nothing she can't do. La LuPone brought my ass here, damn it, not Boyle. But Boyle is lovable, so good for her. lol

  • Just beautiful..Amazing voice and charisma !!

  • I didn't think it was possible to sing in a voice dripping with sarcasm...I guess Patti LuPone just proved me wrong.

  • Amen !!

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here !!!!!!

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here. However I also love Patti LuPone she sold the song first!!!!

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here !!!!!!

  • Shy, frumpy little Susan Boyle from "Britain's Got Talent" does this song SOOOOO much better than Patti Lupone, it's not even funny. Patti is all slick packaged B'way diva, she doesn't even connect with the depth of the piece. Plastic Patty sings for you.

Watch out, Pats, Susie's right behind you....

  • Oh, Susan Boyle got me here, too, but don't even try to pretend that she sings this song better than Patti, who is accompanied only by the piano. Her singing has more variety to match the lyrics. Nothing against Susan, she deserves all the good things that will come to her.

  • I grew up on Patti's voice as Fantine...but I feel that her banter takes away from the heartbreaking point of the song. It's like..."well, now we know she couldn't care less". I'd rather hear her on the album where I can pretend that she felt something.

  • I don;t think that it is she couldnt care less i think it was suppose to be an amusing little story but it doesnt ref;ect well on Ms. Lupone

  • god, she sounds awful, like she's drunk.... the scottish woman blows her away...

  • Wow the sketch is rehearsed... she basically recites the whole thing...

  • I simple "She's not my cup of tea would suffice"!!

  • What are you talking about? I love her as a performer.

  • excellent comment! and so true too! kudos to you....

  • Your mother!

  • First I am not wrapped up in the lives of celebrities. You used a derogatory word and I put YOU down as someone should BITCH! So you can go fuck yourself you pathetic waste of a human life. I will not respond anymore b/c unlike you I HAVE A LIFE YOU PIECE OF SHIT!

  • absolutely stunning

  • She looks amazing!

  • I cannot believe she ever smoked. WOW and with the voice. I find this story a bit shocking cause Patti has alwasy been so profesional btut it is hilarious.

  • Does she still smoke? Because her voice doesn't give that off.

  • Supposedly she quit when she got pregnant with Josh her son

  • Quit? Last year she won her second Tony award. Did you mean she took a break?

  • Of course she didn;t quit as in not going back. I think she said quit but obviously it was just a break. I am glad she is back

  • I Loved it! She has a marvelous sense of humor. Does anyone know where to buy the DVD of this PBS concert? Thanks

  • haha, she can sing and she's funny :')

  • GODDESS

  • lol, she missed her cue in les mis

  • Extremely talented

    And funny

I cannot WAIT to see her in Delaware!

  • I am going as well!! :)

  • she's so adorable lol

  • this is the strongest performance i saw of this song!!!

  • Wow...how professional.

  • she is lovely; but I hate the pianist in all of these! the arrangements are terrible

  • Yeah she smoked. She quit after she had her kid.

  • This is GREAT. Where can I get the full concert? This is loveable <3

  • I luv it how patti is so honest lol, I always thought of this, and how patti feeled about having a smaller role, but yet an important one
