@nakedvolleyball with some cats its necessary. we have three cats, one of which we try to cut the very tips of the claws off so that they are somewhat blunt (she doesn't go outside much to wear them down) otherwise our whole house would be in shreds, including us :) you can get scratch posts but they just remove the loose nail revealing new, sharp weapons. its nothing compared to the disgusting procedure of declawing (most vets now refuse to do this), just typing the word makes me angry :z
