  • great playing!

  • Are these stock pickups? I don't know what it is, but in this video, this Epi sounds way better than top level Gibbys. Who else agrees?

  • @SiCkTURBOz

Yes, they're stock pickups. I know everyone seems to change Epi pickups, but these ones sounded great to me, so I kept them. The guitar itself is a 2008 Epi Les Paul, so maybe that was a good year for Epi pickups. I'm playing through a Zoom G2.1u effects box plugged straight into my laptop, by the way.

  • You can play man :) Epi lover and owner here

  • @ronniegogs

Thanks very much. Epiphones are great guitars.

  • Smooth like Jeff Beck.

  • no pickguard? did you take it off?

  • @GuitarLord3000

Yes, I took it off - I don't like the way they look, they tend to get in the way of my fingers and they seem to serve no purpose; I've been playing this guitar without the pickguard for about three years and there are no pick scratches on the finish yet. I think the highly curved top of a Les Paul provides plenty of clearance between pick and guitar, at least for my playing style.

  • @Kev3542 i guess it looks a lot better w/o the pickguard anyway. more like a gibson. so how do you take it off? any instructional videos?

  • @GuitarLord3000

It's just two screws. Unscrew them. Pull the pickguard off the guitar. Job done.

  • I love Epiphones there top professional quality and the match Gibsons even better. Epiphones are way underpriced and thats only because there made over sea's but that will change. Epiphones are classic and classy guitars its not even Arguble.

  • here is the prove that an Epiphone Les Paul can sound really good

  • @R3yK1d if you play like this man, you can make any guitar sound great

  • @Kev3542 no problem, i rhought that finish looked some what special, and where did you get that honeyburst finiah?

  • @vaibzzz123

I bought it through Amazom marketplace. It was exceptionally cheap - if I remember correctly it cost about £250 as against £500 in the shops.

  • Love your style man, like Satriani crossed with Vai and Jesus.

  • AWESOME! I have a question for ya.. Did you change the pickups? I mean.. Are this the same stock crappy epiphone pickups that come with the guitar? It sounds amazing!

  • @JesusNiettoTalkz

Thanks very much indeed. I don't really understand why Epi pickups attract such opprobrium (now there's a word). I'm guessing that in the past the Epi pickups were really poor, but the ones that came with this guitar as standard in 2008 (which I've left in place & therefore used in this video) sound great to me - the guitar certainly holds its own against my Gibson ES335 (I don't have a "real" Les Paul to compare it to). So, yes, they're the original pickups.

  • @Kev3542 WOW! I mean really.. That's really really amazing! I had to subscribe! I expect more videos coming out soon (from you of course) Have you heard that saying that says "It's not the size, it's what you do with it" ? I think that's what happens between you and your crappy epi stock pickups.. I really thought that you were using some seymour duncans like antiquity's or something like that because it really sounds amazing! Keep going my friend, you've got it!

  • @JesusNiettoTalkz

Thanks for that...and thanks for subscribing, too.

  • you got skills, im sure you ve got a real les paul too,, but this epi sounds great

  • you should be sponsored or something

    YOUR GREAT!!!!

  • what finish is that? looks soooooo good!

  • @vaibzzz123

First of all, thanks very much for subscribing. The guitar is meant to be a honeyburst finish (at least that’s what I ordered), although it’s unlike any honeyburst I’ve ever seen. It’s kind of a strange (but excellent) cherryburst/honeyburst cross - apparently, Epiphone only used this colour during 2008 and called it "honeyburst".

  • Damn can this guy play or can this guy PLAY?!

  • Awesome tone, and a great job on the track.

  • very nice demonstration!!

what's the difference between an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and an Epiphone Les Paul Standard plus , basically?

  • @markushalfmad

Thanks. As far as I'm aware, the only difference between an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus is that the Plus has a figured maple cap, as opposed to the plain maple cap on the plain standard.

  • @Kev3542 You sound good on this! Can you play an Epiphone Les Paul Jr or a Gibson B. B. King Lucille or a Gibson Melody Maker or a Gibson Midtown Custom or a Gibson Dark Fire or Gibson Robot Guitar or a Fender Stratocaster or a Ibanez or Jackson electric guitar? I also forgot to mention a Gibson ES-335! Can you play that?

  • Comment removed

  • You realy can play very good i wish i could play like that!! awesome

  • @prullejoep

    Thanks very much.

  • Nice playing over Steve Vai's Naked track of Crying Machine that way. Do you have more Vai naked tracks like that?

  • @MegaBadhorsie

Thanks very much. There are plenty of Vai backing tracks (including this one) on the guitarbackingtrack site - just type guitarbackingtrack into Google and it should show up.

  • Damn, i really wish sunbursts now are like this ones, now they are flashy red and the guitar looks cheap with that colours...All the models are that crappy on the colour, or it just depends on your luck and the colours vary? If all of the new ones are that crappy red i will have to take ebony or honeyburst..

  • @orfmor

I couldn't agree more. When I bought this one (via mail order), I went for a honeyburst because of the cheap red cherryburst (or whatever they call it) finish. However, when the guitar arrived it was this strange (but excellent) cherryburst/honeyburst cross - apparently, Epiphone only used this colour during 2008 and called it "honeyburst", even though it isn't really. Have you considered a gold top Epi instead?

  • @Kev3542 Nooooooo :D

  • Hello sir.

I was wondering if there is a difference ( except the colour ) with this guitar and the Epiphone Les Paul Standard EBONY? This one in the video cost more money but i dont know if there is much difference. :) Please respond!

    Erik

  • @thedrawingdude123

I've just checked the specifications of the Epiphone Les Paul Ebony and it looks like it's the same as the one I'm playing in this video - set neck, Alnico pickups, etc. I'm guessing the reason why the ebony is a little cheaper is because it has a solid finish, so the body doesn't need figured wood as with mine, which has a transparent finish. I'd definitely recommend an Epi Les Paul, by the way - they're excellent.

  • Nice playing! Just got myself an Epiphone Les Paul Standard!

  • Wow, nice playing, thats what style i like to play, of course i can't play half as good as you, great video . 5 stars

  • Hi Kev, I just picked up an epi LP standard and Marshall mg30dfx for £160. Strange that someone had removed the pickguard but iv ordered one already. I admire your playing ability and hope to be half as good as you. I took up the guitar 19 years ago and iv never really go anywhere.. Lol but I'm determined to better myself while watching inspirational videos like this one

  • @merlimax

Thanks very much indeed. Sounds like you've got a bargain there with your Epi & amp. You won't regret getting one, that's for sure - they're great guitars.

  • How long have you been playing? mBTW. What are your amp settings

  • @sinfuldavy0

I've been playing for about thirty-five years. As for my amp settings, on this video I'm playing through a Zoom G2.1u effects box plugged straight into my laptop. If you own one, I'll post the actual settings for you.

  • How long have you been playing?

  • awesome

  • sir. Epiphone Les Paul Standard is the name of that guitar? how much sir?

  • @sensei0512

Yes, it's an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. In the UK, they normally cost around £400 - good value as they sound almost the same as a Gibson Les Paul costing £1800...and, please, call me Kev (my name), not "sir" (!)

  • The backing track is from 'the crying machine' by steve vai right? improvs awesome!

  • @pranavguitarist

Thanks very much...and, yes, the backing tracking is "The Crying Machine".

  • Wow!

    That's all.

  • Just excellent !...This and the blues tune, as well.

    A couple of question,

    1) Have you compared the 60's fatter neck to your Standard's 'slim-tapper' ?

    2) What sound effects are you playing through?...Thanks.

  • @duhzzzz

Thanks. I haven't tried the 60's fatter neck and in fact the neck on this Epi is slightly thinner than I would normally choose (and slightly thinner than most of my other guitars), but I've got used to it. It actually plays great.

As for effects, I'm using a Zoom G2.1u effects box, plugged straight into my laptop. I've got the Zoom's Peavey amp simulator, compression, reverb and delay effects switched on.

    Jizzing Second

  • Whoa, I want this guitar now :P What style of playing is that called? I'd like to have a crack at it.

  • @DaBigSmokeDawg

I don't know what I'd call this style really...jazz-blues-rock? I'm using mostly blues and melodic minor scales - I think most of the "feel" of the piece comes from the beat and the multiple key changes.

As for the guitar, I would certainly recommend one.

  • @Kev3542 Right then. Thanks a lot for making this video. I'll definitely look into getting one of these in a few months :)

  • sloppy as hell

  • is this a Epiphone Les Paul 1960 tribute??? How much is it? Thanks!

  • @demoretam

No, it's just a regular Epiphone Les Paul Standard. They normally retail at about £400-£500 in the UK.

  • @Kev3542 Did you remove the pick guard on your own or the guitar came without it??? I think all the regular Epiphone Les Paul Standard guitars come with the pick guard. Thanks dude and keep jamming!

  • @demoretam

I removed it. I don't really like the way they look and the guitar feels better to play without it (at least to me). I've had this guitar for two years and I play it regularly, yet there are still no pick marks on the finish.

  • Awsome Amazing Incredible Hbjjkjjjjh THERE IS NO MORE WORDS RO DESCRIBE IT.

  • @Wipe1254

Thanks very much for that - you've put me in a good mood for the day.

  • this is great, nice video!

  • I wish they still made this sunburst. The ones now are way to red!

  • The "white thing" is a scratchplate. I'm not keen on them (at least not the Les Paul style ones) - they tend to get in the way of my fingers. And I think the guitar looks better without it.

  • hey what is the white thing that the guitar comes with underneath the strings? because on yours it does not have it. im only asking because the guitar looks amazing without the white thing.

  • That was awesome!!! Where did you learn to play like this??

  • @mikeb929man1

    Thanks very much indeed, Mike.

Where did I learn to play like this? Honest answer? Northern England, 1970s & '80s - although I'm really still learning. There's always room to improve...

  • Im getting an Epi LP STD Ebony because it kicks asssssss :D

  • great man. So listen iam new at playing so could i please get the tabs by any chance?

  • @ingloriousbaster09

Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have any tabs for this as it's just an improvisation from beginning to end. However, the backing track is in fact Steve Vai's "Crying Game". You can download a copy for free at guitarbackingtrack (just add the dot & the com). Go to "V" for Vai and check through the list of backing tracks.

  • Hey man that was great, so listen i have just started to play and i would love to play this. So is there any chance i could get tabs?

  • You are very good, can you tell me the year of this epiphone? I am going to buy an Honey Burst and i like the coulour of your epiphone.

  • @MrGoldenStrike

Thanks. The guitar was built in 2008. When I bought the guitar, the finish was described as honeyburst, but it's unlike any honeyburst I've ever seen. Apparently, Epiphone used this reddish honeyburst finish only during 2008.

  • @Kev3542 pretty sure thats cherry sunburst.

  • @Abs9106 He's right you ordered a honeyburst but you got a cherry sunburst xD

  • i'm gonna get my Epi LP STD Plus Top Desert Burst in 2 weeks .. can't wait \m/ ... nice playing dude , keep up the good work !

  • @riffman911 lol

  • Love it. Been looking at that guitar for a while. Any pros or cons I should know about it? Thanks

  • @snowmygod1

Thanks. The Epiphone Les Pauls are superb. No doubt you've heard all the "Gibsons are overpriced" arguments and to some extent that's completely true. This guitar is completely stock & costs about £450 (I actually go this one for £250 brand new off Amazon) and it easily holds its own against a Gibson Les Paul. Just watch out for the pickup switches, though - mine's not as positive as I'd like and I plan to replace it. Apart that, I've got only good things to say about the guitar.

  • oh shit, a zoom g2.1u?

can i get the patch for this tone?

  • @gto225

Here's the settings for the patch I used (hope it makes sense) -

    Comp 3 fs 50

    ZNR GT 1

    Drive PV 26 7 20

    EQ 9 8 8

    Cb DY 0

    Delay DL 51 22 12

    Reverb 8 7 48

  • What amp do you use?

  • @IanlikesMusic

I normally use an old Peavey Stereo Chorus 400, but on this video I'm just using a Zoom G2.1u pedal plugged straight into my laptop.

  • Oh my god man, your amazing!

  • @FatBrianMayFan

Thanks very much...and thanks for subscribing, too.

  • i got an epiphone les paul stnadard, i've played other guitars and i kept this one. hey kev is there a technique to soloing?

  • @aaronalpha147

There are all sorts of different techniques to soloing, aside from the obvious ones of knowing scales and modes or developing a decent picking/fingering technique. One of my favourites is to treat a solo like a conversation, with an opening phrase acting like a question and the next phrase acting as an answer and then repeating the question/answer approach to the end of the solo. Doing this helps to organize your solo into phrases and assists with the flow of the music.

  • You play cool :D

  • @xThorProductionsx

Thanks very much...and thanks for subscribing, too.

  • Hey,,Kev ..am from India.ur play is awesome,i enjoyed it...am just a beginner,,is it ok to buy this guitar??,,,

  • @totalfailure08

Thanks...and thanks for subscribing. These Epiphone Les Paul Standard guitars are excellent - they're a great guitar for a good price. I'd recommend one.

  • Thanks, infact i meant on the color but i read in the comments after i posted. A middle between honey burst and cherry, it's so cool :). Excellent playing, full with passion and inovativity.

  • It's an Epiphone Les Paul Standard (from China)

  • What model is it?

  • Great playing, i wonder if you would know... i've watched a lot of videos on youtube, and the person has used either a line 6 pod, or zooom g2.1u... how do they work? i asked someone and they said you plug them into the amp.... but do you need an amp with them?

  • @motley0crue12

Thanks. The Zoom G2.1u is a great device. You can use it through an amp live or plug it straight into your laptop via a USB. You can also use it to listen to yourself direct to headphones. I'd definitely recommend one. Most of my videos on Youtube were recorded using one and I think they're a very versatile effects box.

  • @Kev3542 @motley0crue12 i've got no intention of recording anything, ive just been looking for a good amp, but i love the tone you can get with this, what im saying is, could i use this as a replacement for an amp just for home practice? when you plug it into your laptop, do you need really good speakers to hear it? sorry i just dont know anything about these kind of things

  • @motley0crue12

It all depends. It sounds great through headphones, either direct from the G2.1u or via laptop. As for speakers, the better the speakers the better the sound, so, yes, it will sound fine through OK speakers, but better through a proper guitar amp.

  • @Kev3542 i see. i've got an amp, just a 15 watt little practice amp that came with my first guitar, i dont use it anymore, sounds bad with any kind of distortion, but would that be ok if i ran the g2 through that, or isit better to invest in either really good speakers or just a better amp aswel?

  • @motley0crue12

It's up to you. I would think that you've got nothing to lose by buying the G2.1u and running it through your 15 watt amp - if it sounds good, great; if it doesn't, THEN go and invest in a new amp. Just check out the sound first - there's no point in buying a new amp if you don't need to.

I suspect you'll be surprised at how good the G2.1u will sound. If you do buy one, let me know and I'll send over some of the settings I use.

  • @Kev3542 thanks man.

  • @Kev3542 mind putn the setting for this patch?

  • @xxGNR12xx

    Here's the G2.1u patch I used -

    Comp 3 fs 50

    ZNR GT 1

    Drive PV 26 7 20

    EQ 9 8 8

    Cb DY 0

    Delay DL 51 22 12

    Reverb 8 7 48

  • the guitar is soooo shiney O.O

  • THATS STEVE VAI CRYIN MACHINE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What about the new version of this guitar? What do you think about that ? ;-)

  • @victor1997ification

To be honest, I wasn't aware there was a new version until you mentioned it. I googled for info, though, and if you mean the Epiphone Limited Edition "1959" Les Paul Standard, then I'd say they look great. Certainly the guitar I play in this video is fantastic, so I'd recommend Epi Les Pauls to anyone.

  • @Kev3542

I agree it's an awesome beginner guitar too. Im going to boy one in a week or two! :D

  • Kev, great playing. I'm interested in buying an Epiphone guitar, and like this model......can you tell me where this was made? Was it made in Korea, which I've heard the guitars made there are higher quality than the China made ones. Also, are those grover tuners on there as well? Thanks very much!!

  • @TheRusty2112

Thanks...and thanks for subscribing. I can certainly recommend an Epiphone Les Paul. This one was made in China and it's completely stock - just as it came from the factory. Even the set up was superb...and, yes, they're Grover tuners.

  • @Kev3542 Great thanks for the info.....I'll probably be getting one soon. I can definitely hear the Vai & Satriani influences in your playing. You should check out Dream Theater & John Petrucci if you haven't heard of them, but I have a feeling you have. Keep up the great playing!!

  • This guitar Epiphone les paul has humbucker pickups? What AMP did you used in this video??

  • @Stevenakos123

Yes, the Epiphone Les Paul has humbuckers - these are the ones the guitar came with straight from the factory. As for the amp, I didn't use one on this video - I just plugged straight into my laptop via a Zoom G2.1u.

  • @Kev3542 OK my friend! Thank you.

  • Hey!! I have just got an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and I sold my old Epiphone Special II, I will record a video with my new guitar soon!! thanks for the comment, and again, You Rock!!

  • you rock!!

    so does the epiphone!!

  • Very nice playing with a very nice Guitar. I have a Epi,,,, But I cant play like you.

  • i tried one of these at guitar center and it doesnt sound nearly as awesome as yours. same model. is there a setting on the amp or a way to play it

  • @capuka117

First of all, thanks for saying it sounds awesome. As for the tone, I'm playing it straight into my laptop through a Zoom G2.1u effects unit - using distortion, compression, delay & reverb. The pickups are standard. I suppose some of the tone comes from the pick attack, but, to be honest, most of the tone comes from the guitar. These Epiphones are very good - maybe you played a "rogue" instrument when you tried one out. Perhaps if you tried a different Epi you'd be more impressed.

  • nice playing i can't belive the epiphone les paul has a really nice sound

i can't wait to get it before the end of the year

  • @saskekun101

Epiphone Les Pauls are brilliant guitars - the one in this video is completely stock and sounds great to my ears (and it only cost a fraction of the cost of a Gibson Les Paul).

  • amazing playing! ;)

what did your les paul cost?

  • @Guitar1rocks

Thanks - both for the compliment and the subscription. These Epiphone Les Pauls normally go for about £400-450, but I managed to get hold of this one for only £250 last year from Amazon marketplace.

  • KEVIN ! GREAT SOUND ! CURIOUS WHAT TYPE OF EFFECTS ARE YOU USING ?

  • @MIKEMOSSBAND

Thanks - I'll send you a message about what effects I'm using.

  • i want your tone and guitar color.

  • why the fuck aren't you famous???

  • @igouroum

Thanks for the question. I ask my wife the same one all the time. "Why the fuck aren't I famous?", I say. "I have no idea", says she. Not much comfort, really...

  • @Kev3542 Put yourself out there! Convert this video to MP3 and put it all over the internet, play more songs like this, make a CD, sell copies, look for a record studio, record even more, look for gigs!

  • @Dkr84

Thanks for the encouragement - I really should make more of an effort. The trouble is I'm an Englishman living in exile in north Wales, so unless sheep take a sudden liking to electric guitar music I haven't got much of a local audience. Still, I suppose I could always move....

  • @Kev3542 YES YOU ARE AWESOME!!!! MOVE TO PLACES WERE PEOPLE CAN HEAR THE AWESOMENESS

  • hehe, crying machine by steve vai, great choice, and awesome guitar, both sound and lookings. btw, great playing!

  • @MascarenhasRMT

Thanks very much - and 10 out of 10 for spotting the backing track.

  • @Kev3542 thanks man, but it was quite easy, since it's one of my favourite from Mr.Vai, and it's nice to see someone playing his own style along with a steve vai backing track.. the best backing tracks you can find, they are so free spirit you know? you can just play. keep up the good work, and thanks once more.

  • you are awesome. nice job. what's your opinion about this guitar(epiphone les paul standard)? like weight, tone, woods etc. and overall, is it a good guitar? thank you very much.

  • @RobotFollower

Thanks, Chris. I really like the Epiphone Les Pauls - I tried one back to back with a Gibson and I can honestly say that I thought the Epiphone sounded and played just as well. The Epiphone is real value for money, whilst I feel the Gibsons have become overpriced. The guitar in this video is completely standard (i.e. pickups, hardware, etc) and to me it sounds great. I'd recommend one.

  • very very cool!!!! nice playing man!

  • Cool playing! I enjoyed that.

  • @GeoStratocaster

Thanks - you're a very handy guitar player yourself.

  • is this a plain top or plus top honeyburst?

  • @bguy75

It's a Plus Top Honeyburst - although it's fairly unusual. Apparently Epiphone only produced this reddish tinged honeyburst finish during 2008 (or so I'm told).

  • omg the color is beautiful like it !

  • did you change the pickup?

    YOU PLAY VERY GOOD!!

  • @bouggi123

Thanks very much. The pickups are completely standard. I know many people change the pickups in Epiphone Les Pauls, but I really don't understand why - to my ears they sound great.

  • does it have pearl inlays or just white?

  • @ladderqueen27

It's got pearl inlays, even though it's a standard.

  • can you play blues, metal with this guitar? any style. metal, heavy metal, blues, jazz, rock n roll and more. is this guitar good for all these styles? thanks.

  • @Tracker932

These Epihone Les Pauls are very versatile. I can get an amazing blues tone out of this one, as well as heavy metal tones and nice warm jazz tones. I can even get a surprisingly twangy country tone, so, yes, it's good for all styles - except some of the more extreme tremolo arm type styles (obviously).

I might add that this guitar is completely standard - a lot of people say that the pickups in these guitars need changing, but they sound great to me.

  • What amplifier do u use? This is heritage cherry right?

  • @ellinaras150

I normally use an old Peavey Stereo Chorus 400, but on this video I'm just using an Zoom G2.1u pedal plugged straight into my laptop. As for guitar, the finish is actually Honeyburst - apparently they used this unusual version of the Honeyburst finish during 2008, when the guitar was made. It sort of looks like halfway between a Cherry Sunburst and "normal" Honeyburst to me.

  • @Kev3542 Thank you very much!!!!!! :))))

  • hey man i was wondering how you get such good tone on your guitar i have the same guitar but its vintage sunburst and i play blues i want that sound lol

  • @megadethjames

Thanks. I'm using a Zoom G2.1u effects unit plugged straight into my laptop - if you own one I can post the settings on here. Failing that, I can only suggest you experiment with whatever gear you've got (which I'm sure you've already done). I should mention that the pickups on this guitar are total stock - everyone seems to think that changing the pickups on epiphone Les Pauls is compulsory, but they sound just fine to me.

  • Hey Kev

    Nice Playing

ive always wanted to play guitar im only forteen

how long did it take u to play officialy because iwant to play stuff like guns and roses.

    did you take lessons.. ?

    Thanks

    Charlie.

  • @hipidude12

Hi Charlie - with an hour's practice a day, you should be able to play most pop/rock tunes within three months; all you really need to learn are about 18 chord shapes. Having said that, you should be able to play the chords to a simple, 3 chord tune, such as "Knocking On Heaven's Door", within a week. Whether you take lessons or not is up to you, but there's so much free guitar tuition on the internet I would try that first rather than pay out for lessons.

  • Fantastic. Just learning the penatonic scale my self. Hopefully I can pull off some random solos like that.

  • holy shit batman that was sick, nice shirt too

  • Thanks very much - I got it from Tesco's.

    Thanks for subscribing, too.

  • how does this pedal sound when its connected to an amp?

did you use an amp when you recorded this song?

  • First of all - thanks for subscribing. Second of all, the G2.1u pedal sounds great through an amp. I use an old Peavey Stereo Chorus 400, but set all the controls at mid point to get a sort of "neutral" tone - then I use the G2.1u to get the tones I'm after. Having said that, this video is recorded with the G2.1u plugged straight into the USB port of my laptop - this is another advantage of the pedal; it's great for home studio use.

  • i know its a honey burst but it looks like a cherry burst
