  • Terry Kath looks really strung out in this vid! If only he could have gotten clean in time, and Cetera stayed, this band would still be packing the big places!

  • Guns just suck in general, they shouldn't exist!

  • Robert Lamm is my fave!

  • It's no surprise that you said that. Aside from the brassmen,he's the only one remaining in Chicago

  • missing Terry Kath every time I come back here to listen....

  • Terry Kath: The Soul Of CHICAGO! R.I.P.

  • That drummer does some amazing stuff.

  • @MishuTaste and his whole kit has great tone

    the toms are amazing

    that 70s drum sound

    snare too

  • Gibson Les Paul personal, pretty rare!

  • Terry's death WASN'T sucicide, it' was a horrific combination of alcohol, drugs and guns. He told people not to worry, the gun wasn't loaded. He has an evolving family and grandson and these people have to go on without Terry but to hear the death was a suicide when it wasn't is unintentionally hurtful.

  • @HRHSheeba That's correct. It was accidental. PSA: Don't play Russian Roulette.

  • That's what Johnny Ace did on Christmas Eve 1954. His death was the first fatality of the rock 'n roll era.

  • @HRHSheeba No matter...the first rule to gun safety is always treat the gun AS IF it were LOADED. That is just common sense.

  • Chicago was great in the 60s/70s. I dont get why the fuck they sell out in the 80s, and just played gayass pop ballads. I like Chicago and everything, but the ballads are god awful to a band, that was jazz-fusion-rock oriented based in their roots.

  • Back in the 80's Chicago had for producers Phil Ramone at Columbia and David Foster when the band was signed to Warner Bros. in 1982. Neither was into the jazz-fusion-rock style like James William Guercio was. JWG parted with the band,or vice-versa around the time of Terry Kath's suicide in 1978,succeeded by Ramone, who was Billy Joel's producer as well. Peter Cetera was into the lame pop ballads, one of his works being 1976's IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW from the Guercio era.

  • An afterthought: Chicago was dropped from Columbia not long after the release of Chicago XIV(14) in 1980. The following year,Columbia released a second volume of Chicago's Greatest Hits and original bassist Peter Cetera released his solo self-titled debut album. I thought his debut was SOLITUDE SOLITAIRE but that followed in 1986.

  • @phoneix91 i know this sounds harsh, but chicago did what ALL groups that are successful do...they 'sell out'. they 'sold out', frankly, the second they signed a record deal. this is not INHERENTLY a bad thing. its the 'music industry', which means it's about business. not 'selling out' means you'll wind up like the group looking glass. all of us who work 'sell out' in one form or another, even if we own the business. lets be happy chicago made GREAT music for their work.

  • @phoneix91 but don't get me wrong...TO ME, their peter cetera stuff of the 80s sucked.

    LOL

  • Chicago has the BEST horn section in the world!!!!!!!!!

  • Undoubtedly. Even the Boneroo Horns, the brass ensemble that worked with the Bee Gees in the 70's and 80's,couldn't hold candles to James Pankow,Walter Parazaider and Lee Loughnane.

  • @arhuxtable Amen!!!!

  • Danny Seraphine @ 6:00 .

  • Danny is awesome! He could be a cop and play drums with billy clubs. LOL While they have the opportunity,Danny should quit California Transit Authority and he and Peter Cetera should rejoin Chicago. Jason Scheff,Cetera's successor since 1985,could never create the magic that Cetera and the late Terry Kath did.

  • I agree Terry Kath brought a hard edge rock sond in his playing that meshed well and they became a jazz rock band. My older sister turned me on to these guys in the early 70's.

  • how did terry kath die, and when.

  • Terry Kath accidentally shot himself fatally on January 23,1978. He was at a party, checking out a pistol, and he was drunk. He goofed about the pistol being unloaded and with one bullet remaining in the chamber,it traveled into Kath's skull after pulling the trigger(the gun barrel was directly toward his skull) and it killed him. Kath was 31 nearly 32 years old when he died.

  • Ohh! Absolutely Stunning! There was a certain magic in the 70's that could never be duplicated, rehearsed, and it absolutely will never come back for billions of years. Everyone had it. Even the most corniest musicians and singers caught lightning in a bottle!

  • Kath and Cetera, and Lamm made Chicago what it was and what it is today. These three musicians/songwriters/singers are unreplaceable. Cetera's and Kath's replacement do no justice to this once upon a time supergroup. Jason Scheff's singing ability is unsatisfactory, at best. Now they are a tribute band to themselves, a cover band, if you will.

  • Terry Kath,Peter Cetera and Robert Lamm were the Three Stooges of Chicago. Cetera and drummer Danny Seraphine should rejoin Chicago because a lot of the band's fans loved them when they were in the group although Cetera resigned and Seraphine was ousted. Jason Scheff and Tris Imboden couldn't make pimples on PC's and DS's face and ass.

  • @arhuxtable hell yesssssss

  • @arhuxtable They were hardly stooges.

  • You're probably right. I say that because many songs featured Terry,Bob or Pete on lead vocal up to Terry's death. There were rare exceptions, one being YOU ARE ON MY WIND which was written and sung by trombonist James Pankow. Pete and drummer Danny Seraphine should still be in Chicago. Unfortunately,Terry can't return because he is with God.

  • I'm glad Chicago plays a more up tempo version nowadays in concert. It's still great to see the guys in the early days and what a good voice Lamm has.

  • These guys kicked ass; todays' pop shit is nothing compared to Chicago. the jonas bros are shit compared to Chicago--they are not even worthy enough, to shine the shoes of Chicago or the Beatles or Three Dog Night.

  • @phoneix91 Have you seen the "Uptown" video from the Essen, Germany show? If you like that "dude with the shades" now, you'll really love him after you see that. He starts really cooking at about four minutes in and trust me when I say, you will be blown away! Regards, Carina

  • @phoneix91 oh girls just adore them JoBros!

  • Yes they do. I thought about this, but I don't think the Jonas Brothers would be ideal chemistry for the Chicago Horns. There is one track on the JB's LINES,VINES & TRYING TIMES featuring a brass ensemble and it is not the Chicago Horns.

  • Would you say that Hanson(brothers Isaac,Taylor and Zachary Hansonre shit compared to Chicago? The Jonas Brothers are today's Hanson and today's Bee Gees.

  • Who is that dude with the shades playing the guitar @ 0:13

  • @phoneix91 That "dude with the shades" is Terry Kath!

  • Did Chicago do drugs in their early years(1967-1973)? I've heard a rumour, that Terry Kath had done Mandrax.

  • Intensity is the key.............

  • Did the band Chicago ever do drugs?

  • Just Tylenol for headaches.

  • Hendrix said " Go ask Phil Keaggy." not Terry Kath.

  • Dont be sorry, I was mistaken about phil keaggy not Kath;however, Hendrix did say Kath from CTA was the best guitarist in the universe according to Walter Parazaider.

  • Hendrix was asked "how does it feel to be the world's greatest guitarist ?" Hendrix replied "I dont know why dont you ask Terry Kath from Chicago."

  • @051500 No! He said Phil Keaggy, not Terry Kath. Sorry!

  • My guess is that the Wall Street Journal ran that BS story that Danny Seraphine had mob connections because the WSJ was upset at Chicago for their criticisms of Nixon. You still can't pick up that paper without getting a strong whiff of right-wing bias.

  • @jax1moi8 Wall street journal? Right wing bias?? Your kidding right! I suppose you thinkFox cable is "right wing" biased.

  • Oh, COME ON! Stop kidding YOURSELF! If Fox Cable isn't right-wing biased, then the sun must be revolving around the earth.

  • @jax1moi8 You are obviousely of the MTV. generation. Do yourself a favor and try not to get your info from cnn. and such. You will be amazed at how you have been indoctrinated.

  • You're the one who's obviously got the chip on his shoulder about the WSJ and Fox. As for CNN, it's crap, too. As for me, I cease to be amazed. And that includes you.

  • whats the very first hit single by the Chicago Transitt Authority??????

  • Questions 67 & 68 debuted as a single in or around April 1969 when the band's debut album came out. The album had a slow start selling, but it continued to chart through mid-1971.

  • Just saved this to my favorites file.

  • Terry Kath is the greatest guitar player that nobody remembers. He was SRV before SRV knew how to tune a guitar. Peace out

  • Precisely.

  • There is a story about Chicago playing with Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix "supposedly" said that Kath was a great guitar player, even better than Him. Don't know how true it is, but a cool story

  • @kirk9215

Happened at The Filmore West I believe...

  • @kirk9215 -- If you watch the VH1 Behind the Music special Part 1 at one minute/57 seconds Jimmy Guercio speaks to this. If you want to hear what Hendrix said to Walt Parazaider, watch the same clip at nine minutes/13 seconds. Cheers! Carina

  • This is just the sweet, real deal, isn't it?? Sure wish I could have seen Chicago live back then, with Kath still around... awesome.

  • is there a dvd of this. I saw this on a torrent online last year, but I thought it was fake.

  • Although this was Bob Lamm's composition,it would have sounded awesome if Terry Kath or Pete Cetera singing the lead vocal.

  • Muy buena banda. Terry Kath la rompe. Saludos desde Argentina.

  • The begging of legends of rock and roll

  • Baby, did you write this for me??!! I love you & I cannot put it into words .. LOVE this beginning of what we want to feel forever.. ♥♥♥

  • It says what I want to say My Lady..This is the beginning of something beautiful 333 ♥♥♥

  • they lost the edge when Terry Kath died.

    Just saying.

  • Terry was beyond irreplaceable......He was every bit as much the heart of that band as Cetera, who eventually sold out like a pussy in the '80's. Kath would have never made such a debacle of Chicago.

  • That was an awesome comment.

  • Thank you. It's straight from the heart!

  • @bds1167 sums it all up

  • @bds1167 read the bios...listen to the interviews,so not true. just sayin.

  • @bds1167 But do you think they could really play that hard rock stuff in their 40's and 50's? Like all people, musicians mature and wind down. Hard saying what it would've been like if Kath was still alive. Shame he did but fact is he's gone. Every man in Chicago made this the legendary mega-seller it was for years.

  • @bds1167 I must say you're right about Cetera. He DID become a bit of of a pop sellout, and, at times, a sappy one at that. That stated, this is a nice tune, nonetheless.

  • @jameslickms i never did believe that just one person made a band.

  • I mentioned once before that the six surviving original Chicago members should have reunited this year for a tour to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of their debut album. Current Chicago member Bill Champlin could join them to "play Terry Kath's role". Donnie Dacus replaced Kath after Kath killed himself. Later Dacus left, and Champlin succeeded him. But,there was bad blood between drummer Danny Seraphine and the others. That's why he was fired.

  • Champlin was with the 6 surviving original Chicago members between 1981 and '85 when Peter Cetera exited. Cetera's successor,Jason Scheff who eclipsed Cetera's tenure(he's still in the band),couldn't make pimples on Cetera's face or ass,LOL.

  • @arhuxtable I think Bill Champlin was a fantastic addition to Chicago. He has a bad ass voice.

  • @arhuxtable Bill Champlin is a good musician, but he's more a keyboardist than a guitarist. On their albums in the 80's, Chicago regularly used session men to handle the guitar parts, but just could never find the right guy to replace Terry.

  • How one compare.. this is Excellence!

  • I feel fortunate to have witnessed 'Chicago' at their beginnings as 'The Big Thing Band' in 1967 in Chicago. When Peter Cetera was added to their lineup they really tightened up their sound and made some great music.

  • That is amazing, man!!!

  • I'd give my left nut to have have seen them when you did, brother.... Still inside my mum's belly then!

  • I've never heard Robert's voice so smooth and strong. Fabulous!

  • Today´s bands are crap compare to Chicago, they don´t make music like this anymore.Chicago is the best band on the planet.I still miss Terry Kath and Peter Cetera

  • You're probably right. The Jonas Brothers are nothing like Chicago. Peter Cetera is still alive but has been long out of the band. I miss him being in the band too.

  • My helper listens to hip hop?? Chicago is sooo awesome compared to that!! Alot of todays music is just nasty dirty lyrics and pretty much the same as the next one.

  • yeah, except for the jonas brothers (HE SAYS SARCASTICALLY!) There is nothing even REMOTELY as good as this magic!

  • june32, why the fuck are mentioning the jonas bros in the same breath as Chicago. Chicago, proably has more sucess than those faggot ass jonas brothers had in a yr. Chicago has traveled the world over 20 times, and sold more albums than those sell-outs will ever do in their lifetimes.

  • not to mention that this is actually real music as opposed to that shit the jonas brothers dare to call music

  • mrdonovan213, the jonas bros are shit, they are not even good enough to shine the shoes of chicago, eagles, or beatles.

  • You may be right. The Jonas Brothers got a long way to go before they're inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame. The other three bands you mentioned are definitely R&RHOFr's. The Jonas Brothers are today's Hanson and are the hottest group in pop/rock music today,I have to admit. Yes,they will never hold candles to Chicago, the Beatles or the Eagles..

  • @phoneix91 I think Chicago is America's longest running band. In Uk it's McCartney and Clapton.

  • Chicago is second to the Beach Boys as America's longest running band. In the UK,The Who are second to the Rolling Stones.

  • One of my all time favorite bands. With out Terry they never sounded quite the same. When Cetera took over, they lost the edge. Saw them in 1972, one of the best shows I've ever been too.

  • Chicago certainly "lost the edge" after Cetera exited in 1985 and five years later, out went drummer Danny Seraphine.

  • @sueintexas pC did not take over anything...blame someone else!

  • Great freaking band

  • One of the most best bands ever!!

  • THE BEST

  • To me Robert Lamm is so faggish now with the hand held keyboard thingy. They never needed another keyboard player in the first place.

  • nodding in agreement note his vaccant stare too no passion left in him! sad!

  • Awesomesome, 5*/ fav.

  • this song makes you miss lincoln park

  • What's my man playing a '72 Gibson? ;-) Love ya Terry RIP brother

  • The beginning of the end....69-72 was Chicago's golden period. Then the schmaltz, booz, drugs set in and the band was never the same...RIP Terry...

  • WOW!

  • My wedding song...... which ended in divorce 8 years later..... major pain.

  • My wedding song was Color My World...which ended in divorce after 27 years....major pain too.

  • We're 14 years apart, but I hear ya, man!

  • coooool!

  • Dani Seraphine was born to play in CTA.

He s such a melodic drummer.

  • Absolutely.

  • Danny's band today is California Transit Authority(he has a home in Los Angeles). So for over 4 decades,he played in CTA. His band does Chicago material often.

  • Superb!!!

  • I love the brass!!!!

  • fuckkkkkkkk yeahhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Nice drum mix in this one.

  • Oops... forgot to mention that it was my sister!!

  • When I was 5 in '73, I remember the band playing this at her sweet sixteen, and her dancing with me.... amazing what we remember.

  • Pankow's trombone solos are amazing. The second one after the trumpet solo is especially impressive, as it appears to be done mainly through embouchure (lip tightness) and tonguing technique. Best brass section in the business.

  • There is nobody like Pankow,Parazaider and Loughnane.

  • The Bee Gees had the Boneroo Horns at one point in their legacy(from the mid 70's to the mid 80's). Pankow,Parazaider and Loughnane played their instruments on the Bee Gees' recording STOP(THINK AGAIN) from SPIRITS HAVING FLOWN. They were all in the same geographical location at the time the song was recorded so the Chicago Horn players got the invitation to play with Barry,Robin and Maurice Gibb.

  • 4:54 NEEDS MORE COWBELL

  • chicago will stand the test of time, as they already have, long live Chicago!!!

  • Their early stuff is where it's at. Great chit!

  • Robert Lamm is doing the singing at the keyboard.

  • Is Robert Lamm the guy doing vocals.

  • Yes

  • anyone know if this concert if filmed completed would ever be released on DVD.

  • @phoneix91 Supposedly, because of some deal with Terry Kath's widow, none of the older footage has been officially released, and I don't think it ever will.

  • old stuff like this is hard to find...this is precious love it

  • Trombone player rules!!!

  • When Chicago was on Live By Request Lamm totally butchered the first line of this song...probably nervous

  • is there a 'complete' footage of the concert. Did NHK record; they recorded KISS in '77 on the KISSOLOGY dvd

  • is this from Live in Japan. I downloaded it off a torrent in july and the concert sounds great. I hope chicago was a dvd called "Chicago Live in Japan '72" of the concert

  • nooo wayyyy. chicago is still the band no one can match up to today. Plain ole Legends girlfriend.

  • @isoruswrex yes I do love how the last two minutes go and fades out. That was pretty cool for 69(As 70's set in I loved those 6 and a half minute or more songs where 4 minutes of the song was without lyrics and just playing!

  • esto si es una banda, gran cancion un de mis favoritas!!!!

  • Si. Estar de acuerdo.

  • great footage, great sound. would love to watch the whole show. thanks for sharing

  • their first two albums were great but then they started to get a little too pop in my opinion.

  • Total underated early band, distinctive sound nothing like it, 70's groove, great musicians above all, terry, peter, great sound.

  • (( Total underated early band ))

Are you kidding me? To me they've never been underrated... Have no idea which gauge you're judging by...

  • Great stuff...today's music isn't what it used to be

  • that drummer danny something is so funky the guys they've have since have no funk no soul that man drove that band!! i wish i knew someone with that rare talent.

  • Terry really didn't seem to have his heart in this one but all others made up for it. I love these guys, one of the best under rated bands of all time.

  • This is the best video version I've seen of this song.

  • Great Post Ty

Probably only time in rock history

    a trombome upstaged the guitar

  • I heard someone once describe the Chicago horn section as "lead trombone".

  • Great version. Saw them at the Albert Hall in London in 1969 and they blew me away in much the same way that this footage has just done some forty years later. Thank you for sharing it.

  • Chicago is a brilliant band and Beginnings is my favorite of their songs. Thanks for posting the vid!

  • My ALL IME favorite song. Thanks for posting it.

  • I am VERY grateful to be able to see Chicago in all of their early glory (through videos like this one).. Yes, it must've been HEAVEN (where Terry is now) to have seen them in their prime... Robert, Terry, Pete, Jimmy, Lee, Danny and Walt sounded SOOO perfect together.. Chicago ruled the 1970's..

  • I can't even fathom what a joy it must have been to see them in this era.EVERYTHING is tight, amazing. I first saw them in 77 and was, still and always be blown away

  • You are sooo right! I'm 60 now and Chicago WAS ans still IS my first and always will be the greatest (music)LOVE of my life! Intensity is the key, Robert sings! I have been there in 1969 in Amsterdam when they did Europe for the 1st time. An experience NEVER to forget. Esp. because I didn' know thén, I'd see Terry never again! But I'm ecstatic to SEE Robert and his band end of this month again in Paris, July 29, 2008!

  • one of the great songs of all time but the slow version puts me to sleep. The horn section needs to stand out more...I prefer the way the band performs it today.

  • Excellent performance! Between CTA and EWF it was a great

time for Music. This is just unreal. Why can't bands today

just jam like this. What a cool vocals.

  • Now it may be a slow tempo, but Danny makes the whole thing work.

  • Cool drumming, what a relaxed tempo.

Terry!!! you jurk!! Why did you shoot your self?! Just for a game......

  • From what was said then, it was an accident. He was cleaning a gun and didn't realize their was a bullet in the chamber. There has been a debate about whether it was an accident or suicide.

  • He was a great guitarist but you have to wonder (if it was an accident) why anyone would be stupid enough to put a gun up to their head and pull the trigger (let alone, not checking to make sure no bullet was in it).

  • Makes you wonder too, but I don't think we'll (the fans) ever get the truth. I just loved his voice. He would be great right now, still singing and touring with band.

  • russian roulete game. I remember they were stoned, and someone dared him to do it-----------he didn't think it was loaded. no controversy, it was open and shut. suicide was speculation for anyone who wanted to make something of it. he was a great one, it was a huge loss for all of us who were big chicago fans. no one's come close since in that band...

  • Really??? I'm from Cleveland and I guess the national media got it wrong, but at the time, I remember they were saying it seemed accidental, but you're the 1st to say russian roulete. Why people play that game, I'll never understand. So true, he has such a distinctive voice, no one has come close. My very favorite from him.

  • I had heard Russian roulette too. I think I still have the clipping in my music scrapbook from the day he died, because even at the age of 13, I loved Chicago. And getting my first album -- Chicago X (with "Another Rainy Day," "You Are On My Mind," "If You Leave Me Now" on it) made me like them even more, since I played trumpet in middle and junior high school.

  • It was so sad because I just love his voice. No one since has come close to him. His voice is like butter - smooth. They don't make singers like that anymore. Terry Kath, we miss your melodious tones. RIP.

  • Top of the line musicianship. These guys were incredible. And Danny on a cheesy 5 piece drum kit putting Neil Peart to shame. They were not "on top of their game": They WERE the game. There will never be another Chicago. Period.
