This entire clip is way way great but also pay close attention from about 2:55 onward. ..at the place where Chick goes into an African-6/8 --- keep that beat like he does so well - and dig what Gonzalo puts down...a montuno in possibly in an odd time? and then the accents he plays after the montuno but stick with Chick's beat during that and you'll get some essence of what the Cubans know
Hello, fellows! I don´t have the hi definition version, just this one. But I have something all Chick Corea fans would like to see: He playing with Friedrich Gulda, which simply "give up" playing on the stage. Wow! You must see that! I will upload later...
If you want to know where it's at and can follow it...at the place where Chick goes into an African-6/8 - keep that beat - like he does so well - and dig what Gonzalo puts down...a montuno in possibly in an odd time? (try 5/4 and 4/4 to make 9/4 against 6/8 which is something Gonzalo seemed to explore a while back (see "Paseo" and thereabouts) and then the accents he plays after the montuno - stick with Chick's beat during that and you'll get some essence of what the Cubans know
@TiqueO6 Hi, how cool! Now I know that this thing is named "montuno". I didn't know how this is named although I knew it as something very typical and original of latin music. I also explored all(or some) clave rhythms. Can you give me some list of common rhytms/vocabs that are used in latin/cuban music like the clave rhythm or montuno. I am very interrested in this type of music and don't know what to search for on the web to get material... :-)
I'll give it a detailed listening but didn't mean to say it was surely in 9/4 against 6/8, but isn't that the same thing as heavily syncopated in a sense - if it's fitting into the triple meter but it's in a half\time-like relationship?
Again, I'm speculating based on past work Gonzalo has done using similar concepts and given some time will listen again more closely to this in particular.
eh... i don't know how i feel about this clip. BUT, if u haven't seen the 2006 version of this duet, live at the Blue Note... pffft, they KILL this tune, and in a much more elegant fashion. look it up.
Extraordinary pianists... These cats are way ahead of our times... Any one that can't relate to this type of musical improvisation has no business listening to it. Perhaps they can go and listen to some rap or hip hop, if you can call that music...
this video is shit-your-pants hilarious!! and amazing, of course. if you want to call these guys foneys, whatever. you may as well call mozart, coltrane, tchaikovsky, and mingus foneys too, while you're at it.
Being raised up the road from where Jazz was born, I do not get it with this piece. The kind of music seemingly goes well with Realism Art by Salvidor Dali. I know it is a kind of fusion, and I am really trying to jell with it.
Dang...i've definitely came a long way. 10 years ago I wouldn't known what do with this music. These days I would think this music is a work of art...
Haha...Chick at 4:32 looks like he's trying to say something to him through the piano keys. It's amazing the facial expression they go through in piece.
Delighted to see these two monsters playing together. Can only imagine the creative energy that comes out of the two of them playing together....Well this song is a great testimony to that energy. Wonderful!
There must be some element of music that I am not seeing here, or that I don't understand, because I thought this was very bland.
It may be because I am so used to latin jazz having at least a bass and a set of drums to accompany the pianist, such as Michel Camilo. Maybe a few horns thrown in there, as with Mario Bauza.
Brother sometimes the origin instrument is enough, here we have two great pianists of our time and for them to strip down a song that usually has a lot going on to what they did is amazing in itself! Chic never does this the same from what i've heard!!!!
artoftube, this is probably the best Spain performance ever. Probably you dont have too much musical knowledge, because the way they go "out" and how they use the scales is just amazing. Improvisation is pure state.
Indeed. I like Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin's rendition the most though. The one where they play in Germany. If you haven't seen it, it's on youtube.
