  • 3:17 op

  • Final Score out of 11 rounds:

Gonzalo Rubalcaba (blue corner) = won 7

    Chick Corea (green corner0 = won 4

and the winer on this fight is : Gonzalo Rubalcaba

  • nice kits!

  • bravo, bravo...2 of the absolute best!

  • La verdad que es un orgullo para nosotros los cubanos, el que tengamos músicos de la calidad extraordinaria de Gonzalito Rubalcaba

  • yeah, I read or heard that Gonzalo was a drummer/percussionist before piano - great perspective!

  • Timba y clasico jazz....señores..

  • monstrooooooos!!!!

  • they must have been bored as hell to have fucked that song up like that......

  • Hello, fellows! I don´t have the hi definition version, just this one. But I have something all Chick Corea fans would like to see: He playing with Friedrich Gulda, which simply "give up" playing on the stage. Wow! You must see that! I will upload later...

  • @Dihelson Please do! I can't wait to see those two together...

  • Chick Corea is not Human. Chick Corea is a Wizard.

  • OMG, this is perfect...gods on earth !!!!

  • Priceless!

If you want to know where it's at and can follow it...at the place where Chick goes into an African-6/8 - keep that beat - like he does so well - and dig what Gonzalo puts down...a montuno in possibly in an odd time? (try 5/4 and 4/4 to make 9/4 against 6/8 which is something Gonzalo seemed to explore a while back (see "Paseo" and thereabouts) and then the accents he plays after the montuno - stick with Chick's beat during that and you'll get some essence of what the Cubans know

    GREAT

  • @TiqueO6 Hi, how cool! Now I know that this thing is named "montuno". I didn't know how this is named although I knew it as something very typical and original of latin music. I also explored all(or some) clave rhythms. Can you give me some list of common rhytms/vocabs that are used in latin/cuban music like the clave rhythm or montuno. I am very interrested in this type of music and don't know what to search for on the web to get material... :-)

  • test

  • @schwoazi

do a web search on "clave con chi" where you'll find a nice glossary which seems quite accurate.

  • @TiqueO6 That's not 9/4 is just a heavily syncopated montuno.

  • @AdamOuissellat

I'll give it a detailed listening but didn't mean to say it was surely in 9/4 against 6/8, but isn't that the same thing as heavily syncopated in a sense - if it's fitting into the triple meter but it's in a half\time-like relationship?

Again, I'm speculating based on past work Gonzalo has done using similar concepts and given some time will listen again more closely to this in particular.

  • @TiqueO6 I know what you're saying (I'm a pianist and drummer) but he's mixing it up so much that I'd just call it syncopation lol

  • was that actually spain.

    i didnt catch it

  • por favor, subanlo en mejor calidad. gracias

please upload this on HD. tanks

  • A ese nivel de tecnica, las palabras sobran, las notas tambien !!!!!!

  • GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • eh... i don't know how i feel about this clip. BUT, if u haven't seen the 2006 version of this duet, live at the Blue Note... pffft, they KILL this tune, and in a much more elegant fashion. look it up.

  • Extraordinary pianists... These cats are way ahead of our times... Any one that can't relate to this type of musical improvisation has no business listening to it. Perhaps they can go and listen to some rap or hip hop, if you can call that music...

  • @vulcan1429 You must be blind deaf retarded and problably knows absolutely nothing about piano nor music

  • this video is shit-your-pants hilarious!! and amazing, of course. if you want to call these guys foneys, whatever. you may as well call mozart, coltrane, tchaikovsky, and mingus foneys too, while you're at it.

  • Phonies? Vulcan1429, crawl back to whatever hole you came from. Obviously you have the intelligence of a box of rocks. Idiot!

These guys are two of the most talented Jazz musicians out there. They are both icons. What is your claim to fame genus?

  • There's an atmosphere that Chick was forced to do this.

    Good for improvisation without rehearsal.

I admire these two guys as composers.

  • rubalcaba with moe sislack , jajajjajjejjejejejejjajajajjajaajjejejejijijjijajaijaijaiauaijaiuajaijaaa

  • Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Freaks!!

  • GENIUS!?!? I see two foney's

  • @vulcan1429 correct

  • Improvised guy!

    They are magnificent!

  • Great Duet, Corea & Rubalcaba, unique! You are invited to check out my melodica & piano performances. Enjoy.

  • this is so fuckign incredible good, two genius of rhythm. Listen to 3:50, immortal...

  • I like chicks facial expressions when he performs

  • So do I!

  • That was ridiculously good!!

  • I have seen Rubalcaba a couple of time, and he is amazing!

  • what you miss here deliveredin is that they are just playing, and having fun here, that's all. its a meeting with a friend an lots of fun...

  • HEELLL YEEEAAHH!!!

  • Being raised up the road from where Jazz was born, I do not get it with this piece. The kind of music seemingly goes well with Realism Art by Salvidor Dali. I know it is a kind of fusion, and I am really trying to jell with it.

  • Great two fantastic pianist. Great arrangement of Spain.

  • The great question is: was it arranged or just improvised?

  • Play was totally amazing, but I don't like Chick's shirt! lol

  • He wouldn´t be able to play so good if there wasn´t the cult shirt!

  • what I'm looking at is an ordinary shirt, what's the shirt has to do with Scientology?

  • @uroio8w Prepare for this, it can be called creepy: for a second I could read your comment as "...but I don't like Shirt's Corea..."...

  • 2 geniuses having fun!!!!!

  • OMG!

They collaps melody into high dimension symphony!

  • WOW!!!!! would love to play like that.

  • great playing...AMAZING AMAZING

  • Dang...i've definitely came a long way. 10 years ago I wouldn't known what do with this music. These days I would think this music is a work of art...

  • gone mad at 4:40 LOL!! what else should I play....when in doubt just hit the piano with somethingLOL

  • Gonzalo look liked he was besides himself...

  • Chic orgasms at 4:32... lol just kidding.... but he could've making that face. 5 stars.

  • Gonzalo Rubalcaba WON!!

    ...just kiddin´!!

    5/5

  • I just love the crescendo from 3:17 to 4:05 !

  • Great version of a great tune!! Chick and Gonzalo always rip it up!!

  • look for the '06 version from Chick Corea's Blue Note DVD series... they're both way more introspective and less flashy... it comes out so beautiful.

  • Man that was out of sight!!! Chick I gotta gig you for that shirt though lol.

  • 4:05 to 4:25 very nice.

  • Haha...Chick at 4:32 looks like he's trying to say something to him through the piano keys. It's amazing the facial expression they go through in piece.

  • ique chido!

  • what a view they seem to float from happiness to joy to love and peace in fluid motions of mind to keys ...just beautiful thanks for sharing

  • L A L O C U R A ! ! !

    MADNESS

    BEAUTY

  • no actually i'd say 3:00 ;D

  • what THE............YESSSSSSS!!! GONZALO !!

See begening of 4:00 how they both freakin enjoy the rythmm yes!!

  • haha chick so funny here haha check out that KILLER smile at 1:00 hahahahaa!! great performance

  • Mira demasiado genios para no admirarlos y seguirlos, que sigan viviendo para siempre y entregarnos esta musica papa.

  • I come here every other week and a I delight myself with this amazing performance. Goddness they go "out" like crazy. Love it.

  • what's up with chick's wig?

  • Chick is THE BALLS!

  • Delighted to see these two monsters playing together. Can only imagine the creative energy that comes out of the two of them playing together....Well this song is a great testimony to that energy. Wonderful!

  • This is amazingly played. Very weird sounding and technical. Chick looks like Dave Chappelle

  • ROFL.

  • i might need to quit playing piano now.. . . there is no way my head can take that. . . .wow. . .just amazing. . .

  • there are no words.. incredible..

  • SIMPLY INCREDIBLE!

  • wow. :( this vid makes me so sad. some1 msg me!! xD Y

  • damn i thought gonzalo was will smith lmfao

  • superb - 5 stars

  • my god...just look at their faces...that's passion

  • That came out soooooo wrong. :P

  • Excelente!

  • fuck, Chick is an ugly bastard...

  • Gonzalo Rubalcaba <<funey face :D heheheh :P

  • BRAVO

  • Great stuff!

One little thing, though. Doesn't Chick look like Alfred E. Newman at 0:02?

[Uh oh, here comes the dreaded 'bad comments']

  • This shit is SICK!!!! Two of my idols!

  • Fooly & cooly...

  • god damn he wrote the song he can play it how he wants!

  • its called jazz music

  • jump off a cliff a theist

  • Magic. Chick's expression at 4:35 as if "Where is he going?" is priceless. Compare Chick and Hiromi.

  • Seeing the face of an artist when others play his trademark song wrong along with him, priceless.

  • and you're not retarded lol

  • hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

is all i have to say

  • chic looks like a cokehead here...

  • you're right. maybe that's what turned him onto scientology!

    Seriously though, great songwriter.

  • A questioning mind, helped Chick to find, the meaning in his life again

  • I bet they helped him find his credit cards and checkbooks too. Scientology is such a scam.

  • There must be some element of music that I am not seeing here, or that I don't understand, because I thought this was very bland.

It may be because I am so used to latin jazz having at least a bass and a set of drums to accompany the pianist, such as Michel Camilo. Maybe a few horns thrown in there, as with Mario Bauza.

  • Brother sometimes the origin instrument is enough, here we have two great pianists of our time and for them to strip down a song that usually has a lot going on to what they did is amazing in itself! Chic never does this the same from what i've heard!!!!

  • the jazz pistols do an amazing rendition of this with a fusion band.

  • barbaro. son unos capos

  • There are no words!!!

  • lindo!!!!!!!!!

  • ESTOS TIPOS ESTAN LOCOS LOCOS

  • lol @ clothes

  • yeah, Chick still wears some pretty weird stuff.... but his massive playing makes up for it..haha

  • w-o-w

  • OOHHH MY GOD!!!! WHAT A TALENT!

  • OOHHH MY GOD!!!! WHAT A TALENT!

  • Simply GODS!!!

  • Pull your eyeballs out magnificent! :D!

  • Pull your eyeballs out magnificent! :D!

  • artoftube, this is probably the best Spain performance ever. Probably you dont have too much musical knowledge, because the way they go "out" and how they use the scales is just amazing. Improvisation is pure state.

    Awesome.

  • Indeed. I like Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin's rendition the most though. The one where they play in Germany. If you haven't seen it, it's on youtube.

  • YEAH!

  • I was responding to Dazedandconfucious. JM and PDL's version of Spain at Vienne in '86 is superb. Better without Al (sorry Al)

  • what the hell....my god that was incredible....

  • Did they practice together, or was it completely on the dpot?

  • they killed me

  • These two monsters having fun like 3 year old kids! Great to see, hehe :-)

  • Can Chock Corea doing anything to make himself look anymore nerdy?

  • Perhaps a bow tie?

  • It wasn't very melodic.

  • haha :)

  • Does anyone else think that Gonzalo looks just a little bit like Carlton from the Fresh Prince? :P

  • yes, he does. :-) but plays better

  • what can ı say.ı can say that we all must listen this video with spain original notes&traffic in our hands.ı rather this practise than 2 years of any music school.

  • That was impossible. Nobody can play like that.

  • "we have 10 minutes" . . . "Spain?" hilarious.

  • 2 Greats OF Jazz Piano

  • Gonzalo Rubalcaba He Is A Giant His Technique is very fantastic He Is A GIANT!!!!!

  • Gonzalo & Chick Amazing

  • ainda nao entendo essas pessoas que perdem tempo julgando. melhor perder tempo, ou ganhar... tocando. viva a musica!!!!

  • that is the best reply on you tube so far!

    parabens!

  • Check: Hector Infanzon Azucar

  • Well, i like better performance rubalcaba than chick corea, chick corea he has a great music , but sounds weird and rubalcaba feels the music and hes technique is incredible.

  • Now, I would not say that Gonzalo Rubalcaba is among the greatest pianist of all time. He is fantastic, but there are so many pianist in the history of Jazz who have done so much more with the music than Gonzalo.

  • chick corea should play moe in the simpsons, hes one ugly man.

  • F*&^! I'm speechless...

Cuba produjo 36 ritmos reconosidos mundialmente. Viva Brazil.

  • gentlemen, stop comparing things because it's completely pointless to say the least. Mozart was Mozart. The problem with people is that other than Mozart, Bach and Beethoven they seem to know NOBODY else. There are tons of great composers, even TODAY, and nobody knows them, nobody cares about getting to know them. Chick Corea is awesome, but avoid comparing him to Mozart.

  • monster!

  • Hello, petzaman1, well, I noticed that the march begins before 1:30, and the chord used is a Bm chord, added fourth,( since Spain is really in Bm ), but the inversion he used is that caused the strangeness. Corea uses that formation very often in his work. Indeed, Rubalcaba is following Chick Corea style.

  • btw, can anybody explain to me what Gonzalo's chord is that he plays around 1:30 in a march like feel? Whenever he first starts playing really... i just have NO idea what that is

  • Balls out.

  • that is freaking cool... two of the best pianists in the latin style (obviously chick has gone past that and Gonzalo isn't without his own talents) literally having a conversation with their music, staring eachother down. That is a privledge to everybody who will come across this music

  • Soooo beautiful, thank you so much for the post

  • WOW Thank you so much!! I have seen Gonzalo 6 times and Chick 3 but never together.

  • Wao! This would be the equivalent as watching Kossing and Yundi Li. Two geniuses of the piano these days. However, the creativity and improvisation reigns over here. No doubt about it . Bravo!!!!

  • Who are you, Chick Corea´s mother?

  • jajajajaja

  • GREAT!!!! Thnks u so much!!!

  • HAHAAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAHHAHA this guys are fucking clowns! They are incredible!! Unique talent.

  • Wow, this is way better than the blue note 50th anniversary DVDs. Awesome!

  • Oh my God....thank you for posting this! Please post more of these two!!!!!

  • Hello, Guys,

    Isn´t it a work of Genius ?

Chick Corea, one of the great masters of all time music ( IMHO ) equal to Mozart, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, a well-gifted jazz pianist. This meeting was historical, indeed. Listen to the ideas... don´t worry about seeing, just listen! Corea has deep ideas, and Rubalcaba flawless technique and incredible latin swing and precision...

  • yes i know this guys 20 years waching them i am a pianist my self since 1985 lots of practicing in this 2 guys 8 hours at least everyday for the rest of your life
