Because people want to delude themselves and see marriage as better and civil union as something to make the other people happy. Really though, the whole Proposition 8 deal is that people (typically conservative Christians) get real butthurt at the idea of same-sex couples getting married and thinks it cheapens their ideal of marriage. As to not look like total douches, they came up with Civil Union, which is marriage except without the word marriage, and thus their union can go unscathed.
To put it simply, it was a proposition to ban the marriage of same-sex couples. Basically, they can't get "married" but can enter into a civil union which has the same rights/privileges as married couples.

Agree completely with this, Prop 8 shouldn't have even come up in the first place.
Still don't know why people have to be so specific of there being differences in a civil union and a marriage.
