30 years ago, in college, they were teaching this exact same thing, from the 70s on. Students read victim narratives about the sterotypes that other races had of whites. That was what education was. We had to read not just black, but various Asians, and hispanics, too, and how negative white was for them. So I guess it is not a social construct to them, obviously. They made pple question if they were "white" to take away identity, why they call it "identity politics" taking away ID.

It's just pattern recognition. If you'd have to point out a white guy from group of people consisting from just one white guy, and rest black guys, the color of the skin is in all likelihood the most striking physical quality to point him out from. From my observations, most people in the U.S. refer only Scandanavian types as 'Whites'. Many people (usually Nordicist) do not consider Spanish, Greek, Italians, Portuguese, etc. as 'White'.

You just proved my point - You don't have to be 'Nordic' (e.g., blonde hair, blue eyes) to be considered White. Just because one has dark hair or olive/tan skin, doesn't set them as being non-White (blatant oxymoron). The fact remains, Mediterraneans are White, but just a different group of Europeans.

You're confusing things. How we socially construct race is based on phenotypes, yes. While those phenotypes do biologically exist, the way that we group them into racial categories is PURELY social.

That's a good question. For me, those feelings don't come often. It's not often that I'm in situations where white people are uncommon, and I think being "out-numbered" is what triggers those feelings. However, culture may be much more important than race, here. For most of my friends (non-white included) race is mostly a joke, but if someone does not understand my intentions, I'll want to avoid highlighting our differences.

One of my parents is Latin American, making me half, but everyone I know considers me white because from my appearance, you wouldn't guess any different. I had a friend when I was younger that was Mexican, spoke Spanish better than he did English, but looked white. His friends called him "Gringo," a slur for Anglo. So does race have to do with your genetics or even your culture? Maybe it's as shallow as only skin color.

Latin American is not a tag for race. Your friend could have had Spanish, Portuguese, or any other European ancestry. There's this belief in the US that Latin American is a race, or worse even, that countries are races, like "You look Puerto Rican", or "You look Mexican".
