MAME is only good for playing Truxton II, Battle Garegga, Twin Cobra or any other 2p shmup. For fighting games, why get MAME when you can get Mugen, which is a mashup of all other fighting games, particularly if there are no imba characters. Why make the characters trapped in their respective games when you can use Mugen for dream matches such as SF2 vs KOF95?
Totally cool! I am starting to relive my youth through video games and have few stand alone units but have started looking at building a MAME system. Just got a offer to buy a cab and ipack box and found your video while figuring out what I might be getting myself into. Very cool video and very informative - thank you!
Totally amazing to watch my man. I am too technologically retarded to build my own. But I enjoy living vicariously though others :P I wonder if you got MK 4 to run with no lag
are you using only games that uses 380x224 ? did you use soft15hz to get that res ? I want to make a mame cab but I dont know if is better to use a tv or a monitor.
It's a PC monitor so I don't need soft15hz. At the time I was using Mala and for each Capcom CPS2 game, I was manually setting it to force 380x224. But I've since upgraded the version of MAME so I don't think you have to do that anymore.
I like how authentic this cab looks. I just finished my cab, and have a few questions. I know at the end you say you put in a relay to connect the light tv and comp, but I don't understand that part. I want to do the same thing you did and power it up by a pushbutton, how should i wire them and all of that so I don't have to manually turn on my tv and comp. which is inside! Last, how did you put the mame logo in the beg. of the boot screen, I want to put something custom but don't know thanx
Awesome. Are you building from scratch or converting an existing cabinet? Take your time with the build process and make something that you'll be proud of. Be sure to make good choices, but don't cut corners... ie buy the keyboard encoder, new parts, and artwork, but don't build a frankenpanel with a rotating monitor. :P
Building 100% from scratch. I'm building a Neo-Geo MVS Cabaret - I took measurements from the MVS-4 and scaled them back about 80%. I'm definitely taking my time & getting good parts. Using an IPAC2 for controls, a 17" LCD (nothing else will fit in a space that small), and a custom theme (bootxp, mala as shell, custom intro video). I agree with you though - seems like 90% of MAME cabs are the same crap over and over or are just completely overdone (or underdone).
Funny, I have a picture of me at California Extreme on my knees playing on a small Neo Geo. But I imagine this may not really be a cabaret.
I love Neo Geo games, I'm a big fan of the Samurai Shodown series (2 is the best). I'd love to build one, but am thinking of building a vertical custom cab next from scratch. I'm glad I did a conversion first to get my feet wet. Good luck with yours! Take lots of pics!
Very cool cabinet you have there. Just curious about something though: what kind of speakers do you have for your cabinet and how did you hook them up?
i prefer 2 usb gameports that u can modify but if the keyboardencoder works its ok. i thought thats the keyboardencoder takes not more than 3 signals simultan
It's an Ipac2 encoder. Each input has it's own interrupt (connection to the processor). Absolutely no delay, key ghosting, or simultaneous key limit. From Ultimarc's website, the maker of the Ipac2: "The I-PAC uses a Cypress CY7C63413 programmable microcontroller chip . There is no multiplexing or sharing of input ports, all inputs have their own dedicated pin on the chip hence absolutely no ghosting, blocking etc. "
Just a thought, but if you dont want the mouse pointer to show up, you could probably just change it to one that is less noticeable, like a black pointer.
Yeah, I made a custom 3-pixel cursor and it's not noticible anymore, however, the default mouse pointer shows for about 1 second before the custom one shows up.

not bad,i dont like the monitor though, too small

19", it's what that cabinet takes. Plus the extra 21" computer monitor I had laying around fit in there perfectly.
