  • Just for the record and to avoid misunderstandings and misleading informations, "Blue Devils" by Charles Williams has piccolo and clarinet parts throughout the whole march and that day the woodwinds of the Band of the Welsh Guards were NOT playing due to rain.

  • Notice that we're listening to a brass band right now. The piccolo and clarinets are not playing, I presume, due to the rain. And how well do the Welsh Guards sound anyway!

  • @arbuckle123 For this particular march, I believe there is no piccolo and clarinet part for that section. You can hear them play towards the end of the shot - woodwind instruments in the British Army are quite often treated nowadays to withstand water damage.

  • I appreciate your answer but I’m not so sure about your explanations. First, as far as I remember, these sections (two) of the march contains woodwinds, and maybe it’s me but I can’t hear any clarinets or piccolo at the end of the clip. Second, you can’t play a clarinet when it’s raining, no matter what kind of special treatment you give the instrument. By the way, these are professional musicians who usually play their normal (valuable) instruments here and also in their own concerts. (Cont,)

  • (CONT.) There are a few more details, like the clarinets or piccolo are not carrying their music cards, Piccolos attach the lyre holder on their left arm and are not able to walk with their left arm down. They carry the instrument up on their left hand when they have longer pauses. So, perhaps we should give their credit back to those fine brass players who had to do all the work and did it so well, don’t you think?

  • @arbuckle123 I have played with the british army bands on many occasions. I also play the clarinet and have doen on parades quite frequently when it is raining, and it is possible... I am actually playing one at the moment that I have borrowed that is "water-damage" treated, although my principle instrument is the saxophone. And as for the piccolo or flute on parade, I'm not quite sure what you are trying to get at! And I have no problem with crediting the brass - although I am a woodwind (cont)

  • @mouchel1995 I’m not saying it’s not possible, I’m saying is not advisable, and professional musicians hate it when they have to expose their instruments to water damage. I hope that you, as a military musician have the chance to check out if those two sections of the march had woodwinds in it or not. Concerning the music card remarks, I tried to formulate it as clearly as I could. I can’t do better than that, sorry.

  • @arbuckle123 musician through and through, I do love the sound of the good old brass! Definately a hair raiser!

  • British Army Air Corps forming the Guard. Pity about the weather!
