  • It was good until it turned green when you showed it from the side.

  • In shorynjiryu renshinkan karate-do they teach you this kata in green with purple stripes. They teach you kenchu-ho in white.

  • Thanks for taking the time to post this it is very helpfull,I am a white belt in East Tn.

  • Thank you for taking the time to post this. It is very helpful to my son and I. We are on this Kata now and are learning Isshinryu Karate together under Sensei Jim Malone who learned from Grandmaster Harold Long. God bless you.

  • totally wrong

  • @AhmetMoustafapasa totally wrong? not just a little wrong? or different? lol.

  • Great video! Thank you!

  • This is my next Kata for isshinryu thanks for uploading it

  • I'm learning Okinawan karate and I'm working on Seisan now. Although this is Isshinryu, it's very similar to the way my Sensei teaches it. This will be very helpful. Thank you for uploading it.

  • Dear Sensei,

Myself Sensei Jithu Nair. A practitioner of Isshinryu Karate.

Your videos are very interesting and great. Please upload other Isshinryu Katas too.

    Best wishes.

  • Very well done! the only thing I didn't see was the power of the foot stomp after the overhand strike to the face, but that could just be teaching preference (prefering to move rather than strike with the stomp, there would be benefits to both.) The display of both power and control is rattling to behold.

  • This is almost exactly the same as the way we do it at my dojo!! :) The only difference is a coupld of transitional stances. Love your form!

  • that is the same Seisan Kata my sensei taught me!

  • Very similar to Chito-ryu Seisan kata. Thanks for posting. We can all learn from one another.

  • Your enthusiasm and form is really good man. in fast motion youhad that pop that i was trying to get. but im confused. in the very beginning, you use the "beer fist" strike only once and then punch, while i use the middle strike (or block as some call it) 3 times, and punch all the while. Also, we add a form of neckbreak directly after that. Mines is based off of ryu-kyu kenpo. i have a lot of differences xD.

  • Very cool.

I'm in the bujinkan now, but I started with Ishinnryu when I was about 6 years old. It's great to see this again. It's very interesting to see the bunkai to; if I remember correctly our bunkai was similar, but of course we were very young so our conceptualization was pretty limited.

    Very nice.

  • I have seen some people destroy the kata, not even close to Shimabuko sensei. When people add to the kata instead of taking from the kata; it changes everything. When you add your own little extra movements here and there, you are changing the kata. believe me, our sensei was one of the first three Americans to bring Isshinryu to the states in 1957. Angae Uezu was just a white belt when sensei got his black belt.

  • the problem with Isshinryu Karate is that is not a unified system as a whole. It all depends who your sensei was and who he learned from. I have seen seisan performed in many, many different ways by Isshinryu practitioners. They all say my way is the right way because my sensei showed this way. Angae Uezu sensei is different from Kichiro Shimabuko sensei, and all the former marines that trained with Tatsuo Shimabuko sensei are different from one another.

  • THIS IS NOT, NOT HOW TO DO SEISAN!!!!

  • @sarahkess1 this is from isshinryu. u probably saw urs from ryu-kyu kenpo. trust me. when i say it, i said the same thing lol.

  • I was following along and accidentally punched my desk.

  • Very cool man. Im about to be promoted after i learn this kata, i cant wait, then I get to begin kumite: that is what im ready for.

  • Sensei,

Very nice. From viewing your kata, it appears your lineage is from Uezu Sensei. Please visit the Isshinryu videos on oikddojo on YOUTUBE. I feel you'll find them very informational.

  • This is the best and most detailed video depicting the Seisan Kata on YouTube. I have watched it many times just to enjoy the fluid motion.

  • There are many versions of Seisan as it is one of the older kata dating back over 400 years. I ask that you keep that in mind before posting senseless comments concerning corrections in the bunkai. there is a joke that goes " how many black belts does it take to change a light bulb?...10...1 to actually change it and 9 to say well thats not how my Sensei showed me."

  • i always love to see the comments on these videos. good and bad. please let me start by thanking all of you for your interest in my videos. please know that i put these up as stated for reference for my students. to those of you that have benifitted from them i am very happy. as far as the negative are concerned. i perform the kata the way it was taught to me by my sensei which is the way it was taught to him by Grand Master Angi Uezu (son in law of the founder of Isshinryu)

  • @skasensei @skasensei i learn both shorin ryu, and issinryu. they are very close. mine was taught by ezio shumabuku the founder of issinryus brother. I even studied shito ryu the pinan katas was very familiar but had some small diferences. I like the comment on black belts so true. i believe all styles could learn from each other. and try to fit the indiviual.

  • first off first move is supposed to represent you blocking two kicks, 2nd your grabs are not grabs during the grab and punch. Third off your changes are not double blocks LIKE THEY SHOULD BE IN THIS KATA, haha. 1 lower and 1 side. Have Jeorg iberl show ya a thing or two sir, dont make a video if it aint gonna be right.

  • yeah dude your def. doing that kata wrong, haha.

  • I just started doing this stuff. And I'm learning this. This is not exactly how they are teaching me, but it's very well put together, and I can tell the little differences (that by the way, you warned us about it on the description). So bottom line.... thank u so much for this.

P.S I like your neatness in your style.

  • Sensei,

Your stands are too wide and long. Your Seisan looks more like the one from Seibukan Shorinryu Karate.

    Regards,

    Nga

  • Very similar to chito-ryu in the basic structure of the kata, albeit with differing stances. Nicely executed.

  • Hi Sensei Steele. I tried to find the number for your dojo in DE to call and thank you personally, but since I had no success, I'll leave a comment here. I have had some other martial arts experience over the years but am relatively new to Isshinryu...and have recently been promoted ot orange belt. I have enjoyed your instructional videos very much, and they have helped me progress. In fact, I learned Seiuchin completely from your video. I hope you will do all the katas. Thanks very much.

  • have you tried the bunkai from the pesrspective of Tuite?

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you very much. I've been studying Isshin-ryu for a couple of months, and I'm satisfied with my progress on this kata. The last third of it has been giving me fits. The sequence is hard to remember, so it's nice to have this video for reference. Do you have instructional DVD's available?

  • Thank you for this video. I have been taking Isshinryu lessons for about a month now. We are in the process of learning this kata. With only 2 45 minute class per week, it's nice to be able to look at this video while I am at home to practice it. Thanks!

  • where is the crescent stepping?

  • Excellent attention to detail. I learned the kata somewhat differently but you have obviously considered every aspect of the method you were taught and perform it well.

  • Isshinrob, I live in the USA and I accept the title here in America, If I were living in Japan I would accept their customs. I am proud to call myself Sensei because thats what I am. I've been studying martial arts over 40 years, Judo, ju-jitsu, Aikido, nerve points, chinese meridians, etc. and have had 6 successful schools. But I am a teacher not master.

  • chrischerc, Do you bow at the beginning and end of class, kata, or kumite? Do you ever where a gi or obi? These are also all Japanese customs. If you are going to use US customs in regard to titles then why not use an English title, like Mr., teacher, or coach? Then it would not be considered rude among the martial arts community.

  • isshinrob I do bow and use other Japanese customs in my dojo. These things I personally prefer as the word Sensei. I've read your comments on rudeness to the Japanese customs so there is no need to rehash. I suggest you use your vast amount of time looking over the Isshinryu kata and learning thr true meaning of its bunkai. Oh by the way concentrate on the many thousands of phony masters and senseis in the isshinryu community. I am legit.

  • This is a great video it really helped. I spent like ours trying to find a video like this. Thanks :D

  • Thank you for this video, It will undoubtedly help me greatly as I learn the first kata. :]

  • Thank you for making this (and therefore helping me to get my yellow belt)! Yay! :-)

  • thanks for the compliments. that is true...always nice to have them. i dont pay much attention to people like that, i just consider the source. = )

  • Look up "Woman Loses Eye While Trying To Catch Arrow Mid-Air" and "Sensei Cherchio" on Google. That alone should be enough to make people run from that guys dojo.

This angers me as an instructor. Just total ignorance!

  • Well done Sensei. Wanted to add a kudos for a nicely done instructional video. It's too easy to bash on these forums and not enough congrats. Nice job.

  • Sensei, Ive been doing Isshinryu for the past 40 years. Can you tell me your bunkai on why one hand is drawn back to the hip when the other punches. Also a little const. crit on your kata. It is good but bringing heel to heel leaves you off balance for a shove, stance is too wide in most of the kata. At the beginning you perform a double upper block without using the protection of your muscles and a greater angle for strength. Thanks, Sensei Cherchio ISSHINSENSE ON YOUTUBE

  • Sensei is a honorific title, used by others as a sign of respect. One is not supposed to refer to himself "Sensei Smith", as it is just ridiculous as somebody calling himself "John, master of the world". Thanks for reading, Sensei Nikolaj.

  • CarNikolaj I use the word Sensei at its literal translation , nothing more nothing less. unlike the HORRIFIC use of the word Master which denotes fear and supremacy to its students. I am simply a teacher (Sensei ) from my many years of experience.

  • I am a student of the Japanese language as well as Okinawan martial arts for many years. Refering to yourself as "Sensei" IS considered disrespectful, even if you truly are a teacher. All honorific titles are used to descrbe others but never yourself. It is a common mistake made by Westerners. Not a big deal, but should be corrected once you are aware of the correct usage.

  • My name is Howard Steele, I train under Master Reese Rigby in Delaware. I also own a dojo here and am a member of the O.I.K.K.A.

  • Where do you train, and who was your Sensei?

  • Nice - strong form and posture
