i was an apprentice @ Vauxhall Luton mechanical div 92 and I and a guy named Bill Tookey installed the engines and gearboxes of both runs of 250 Hs Chevettes. iwas always told how amazing this driver was and its nice to know i had a hand in creating this awesome vehicle
I have only met him once, and we asked him 'How would you suggest driving over the jumps on Ruhimaki in a campervan', he just thought and then said simply 'sideways'. What a character, he will be severely missed. R.I.P Pentti
I spent a year of studying under and working for this great man and will cherish those memories the rest of my life . So much talent and boy could he drink ! A true superstar and a hell of a lot of fun - a rare combo these days .
Pentti was one of my childhool heroes. Later in life, I had priviledge of visiting this amicable man a couple of times. Spectacular driver and great instructor. In short, a very inspiring person to work with. There was a lot of laugh around him. Pentti was an ambassador of his sport and profession as well as Finland, a country where he was born and UK where he lived most of his life. Thank you dgr64 for the videos. And my condolences to Pentti´s family. Memories live on!
Pentti was a lovely man. I had the pleasure of taking tuition from him on an airfirld once and althouh grey, freezing and miserable once Pentti arrived you forgot the weather and the fun began! He will leave a huge Finnish whole in the world.
A true legend. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times he was such a genuine, friendly bloke who would talk to anyone, no airs or graces....and the reason I bought my Chevette HS!
Pentti was competing on the RAC in a Chevette in the 1970's. Running late out of service he had to do some hard driving up the motorway to make the next control on time. Whilst doing some high speeds he was eventually caught and pulled by some traffic cops. The officer asked Pentti "Why were you doing 120MPH sir?" Pentti answered "Simple, I couldn't go any FASTER!" The cop peed himself laughing and sent Pentti on his way with a slapped wrist! AWESOME!!
Sadly underrated but much appreciated for his commitment and his spectacular "Pentti flick". Always at his best when the odds were stacked against him ! Maybe he is swapping stories with Risto now !? R.I.P.
I always will remember that RAC'89, fighting with Carlos Sainz (he was searching his first victory). After the race, Pentti said that Sainz would be World Champion.
one of my idols and heroes. i would love to learn drive like he did
