Found a folder about this incident from the archives in my workplace. Pretty interesting to read how they tried to fix the engines and, after it was deemed impossible in those conditions, made preparations to abandon the vessel by closing all watertight doors, hatches etc., emptying ballast water tanks, leaving notes for whoever might find the ship, eating lunch (pea soup as it was Thursday) and finally turning off all shipboard systems, auxiliary engines etc. before being winched off.
I used to load newsprint on this vessel out of the Stephenville Newfoundland port. Her lower deck was very low but the twin deck was super high. I can she why she would roll on the ocean easily.
This ship sail now under canadian flag under the name Camilla Desgagnés for the nordik operation on nunavut and nunavik...She had major fire on engine room on 2003...I sail there as deck cadet...this ship is cursed...lol
Beacuse of its poor general condition, and very poor condition of its main engine.
The owner of my previous company was planing to buy the camilla before this accident but changed his mind after a engine room inspection..... Less then 6 months later this happened. I guess he was right, my previous boss was a good seaman.
A somewhat lame request, but can you please provide the name of the song? Had a pretty promising intro. Unfortunately Wind Up Records' video channel didn't have anything similar listed.
Vessel had been abandonned, because no more main engine/propulsion and hurricane force 12 expected. Assume that during the storm vessel was very heavily rolling and taking water in tanks through airvents, and no more crew on board to rectify
I work as a chief mate on a roro-vessel myself. We use the weather dependant lashing system. Looking at wave height predictions we decide how many lashings we use to secure the cargo. I think on this vessel the lashings just gave way after heavy rolling due to engine failure in bad weather. I have seen this also on our own vessel and similar ships. And that's no fun !!
Oh, I'm sorry if I offended you... I was in a bad mood that night. And you're right, that is not my type of music. But what can I say? I selected my music type. Best regards to you too. Happy 2008!
Saw this vessel "Camilla" on the National Geographic Channel. The name of the programm was: Trapped: Ocean Emergency. Assume that they will repeat this programm
Hello Silversix, I made the small movie when we arrived with a salvage tug on location just before sunset. The crew on the listing vessel already disembarked/abandonned the vessel by Canadian Coastguard Helicopter. They were not able to control water ingress and weatherforecast was hurricane force winds, that's why they abandonned vessel. We were able to connect vessel the next day and to tow this salvage to New Foundland.
So, how do you go about getting a ship like that into port with out putting more sailors in danger?

My captain told me not so long ago that a roro ship floats best when it has turned over. Time to give things a bit of thought.
