  • A great Mike Batt song he wrote for the Hollies in 1981 - the best take comes from THE HOLLIES. Much better than this one. The Hollies did it live in concert with much more guitarres fantastic.

  • Back up vocals singer is hot !

  • @D4NC1ND4V1D

Do you mean Florence Rawlings? She has her own videos on YouTube.

  • thanks for this music.

    **** peace ****

  • mike is a wonderful song writer but also has a great voice he should sing much more.

  • great - fantastic

  • good writer awful singer:(

  • mein Lieblingslied von Mike Batt......

  • what an awesome song

  • GREAT MUSIC!!!

  • The Hollies have a great version of this song and I'm presuming Mike Batt wrote it as he mentioned The Hollies and Soldier's SOng on Ealaine Paige's Radio 2 programme.

  • Clearly a matter of taste, but I think the Hollies version is much better - mainly due to Allan Clarke's vocals.

Great song though, Batt has always been a great writer

  • Wow, never heard this before, brilliant

  • Awesome!

Much better than the Hollies cover version.

  • @chiffon3 Clearly sung with more emotion by Allan Clarke on the Hollies single and the later version by Carl Wayne

  • wonderful video!

  • toll! noch handgemacht

  • I haven't known that he's a singer :) I only know him as the Katie Melua's producer and songwriter. Though it's a very nice song.

  • @mcnitrox i think he also wrote the wombles songs, railway hotel and bright eyes which was used as the theme song to watership down and performed by art garfunkle

  • now that's a great ballad. I wish I could write like that.

  • Wonderful song, I love it.

  • this song as brought tears to my eye,s

  • @duxberry1958 do you have bright eyes

  • brilliant well done mike j vincent edwards

  • out of tune unfortunately

  • A very talented songwriter

  • An absolute unforgettable classic. Mike is a genius.

  • A wonderful song written by Mike but the Hollies version is fantastic.

  • It`s better than the Hollies song

    He composed it

  • This song is a master piece

  • Gynofingers,

Mike Batt wrote this song and Yes, THE HOLLIES sing it. I think they have the definitive version of the song. While I like Mike Batts song, Allen Clarke of THE HOLLIES has such a powerful and moving voice for the story, allowing visual imagery of the battle and journey riding back along the trail. I cannot stop listening to THE HOLLIES version.

  • Didn't he write this?

  • Ein absolut phantastischer Song. Mike Batt war mir bisher nicht bekannt. Meine Schwester hat mir den Link geschickt. Ich bin BEGEISTERT !!!

  • Did you notice Florence Rawlings on the video?

A great singer at the very beginning of her career... :)

  • Thank you for posting this! I've been a fan of Mike from The Wombles days, and it's great to see him on stage.

  • WASNT THIS A HOLLIES SONG ???

  • Mike Batt is an excellent song writer (I love Bright Eyes for instance) and an excellent talent scout (Katie Melua is the best example, for both talents actually as he also wrote some incredibly nice songs for her). However his voice and this performance fail to impress me. Sounds good at times but it also sounds too often out of tune.

  • Wonder if anyone has his version of 'Closest Thing To Crazy' that was done a few years ago by Katie Melua? It would be interesting to hear his original song.

  • he has an amazing voice love it

  • @returnhangar Agreed...brilliant

  • He's torn between conducting and playing the piano on this one.

  • 1:10 Beautiful

  • Well Done

  • Happy 60th birthday, Mr. Mike Batt! :)

  • Mike Batt is a great Singer/Songwriter & Composer.

  • Mike Batt = genius.. Long may he continue entertaining us with his unique style, and amazing songs.

  • This song does not in anyway celebrate the soldiers raping a woman. Listen to the lyrics. A young soldier about to go to war has relationships with a woman. After the battle his comrades go and rape and pillage. When he realizes that they will get to her also, he goes as fast as he can to stop them, but is too late. Certainly not a celebration of rape.

  • Incredible...

For 20 years, I hunted high & low for this song. Have it on a Compact-Cassette from the early 80´s... And it seems to be impossible to find it on the Internet.

    Big tnx to DramaticoMusic.

Is any1 aware of the original version from the early 80´s?

  • I don't know if this helps but I have it on LP

RCA Victor VPL1 7640 Songs of Love and War

    Peter

  • The CD is called 'Songs of Love and War' and it's still available :-)

  • **** Great Mike! I'm the first wiever! *****

  • He has to be one of the ugliest men I have ever seen . No wonder he hid inside a Wombles costume .

This song celebrates soldiers raping a poor woman
