Sat next to Crosby in NYC at a diner a couple of weeks ago and am still in awe of my luck. I'm always confoundedly aware of the passage of time when I see everyone back then looking so beautiful and young and being so groundbreaking and free. What a great generation.
Steven Stills was a bit overwhelmed by the nudists, I think, but this was only a month after Woodstock & they were a brand new act. He's an extremely underrated guitarist, songwriter, & singer IMO. Appreciate Graham Nash, but his harmony was too loud (enthusiasm?), & could be my imagination but early in the song it seemed Neil was annoyed, having to compete when HE was the lead vocalist. Maybe Graham's ears were still ringing from Woodstock, & he was partially deaf!! :O) Always loved this song!!
@sfaster Thanks for clarifying that... :O). I was thinking about his Woodstock comment: "This is the second time we've ever played in front of people, man, we're scared shitless", & wondering if a boy from Appalachia might be experiencing some culture shock! Lucky you, to be there-I was only 7 at the time. It must have been great, if you can remember it!! :O)) Never understood why Sea of Madness didn't get more radio play. Would love to hear any other stories you might have about the experience!
@sfaster Thanks, I missed that. I'd just tell people about the 1:08-1:10 part... :O)). It must have been great to be that close to the stage-though I guess no one knew they would be superstars at the time!! Funny how a lot of people seemed more interested in watching the crowd/nudists than CSNY!! A year or two later, they'd pay a lot more attention to the band!! BTW, where the hell are the naked women?? :O) Were there any there, or was it just guys??? Or do you remember??? Thanks again...
@bookguitarguy Of course there were naked women! These men were just exhibitonists and real high.
There's a hot spring on the site and within 20miles there were two communes in the area.
That day, some guy was handing out "Orange Barrel" and "Green Double Dome" hits of LSD so
ripping off your clothes meant nothing..................There was about eight acts including Joan Baez, John Sebastian and the Flying Burrrto Bros etc......................
it's funny how he just happens to be looking in the direction of the nude dancers when he sings "i've never seen it through these eyes before now, i don't believe it i think i'll take it & leave it."
Wow, I had absolutely no idea at all that Neil Young could play organ/keys so smoothly and so well. I really didn't, and I'm rather surprised, laregly b/c they were so well played by him here in this song's case.
Back again and wow...what a great fucking band. Just noticed at 2:18 Neil smiling out at Crosby, Stills, and Nash like oops...probably cause he realized that his organ is so loud in the mix it is drowning out all the guitar.
That bass player is Greg Reeves. He was fifteen here. He played bass for CSNY, and also played bass on the tracks on "After the Gold Rush" that weren't recorded with Crazy Horse. One day, he wrote a song and played it for CSNY, not saying that they should record it, just to play it for them, so they kicked him out, saying "You're just the bass player!" I think there's a lesson to be learned here; If you're playing bass for CSNY, and you happen to write a song, you'd better keep it a secret.
A great song which was never recorded by CSNY in the studio (or at least no studio version has ever come to light). It's definitely Greg Reeves on bass (he did the whole first tour from Aug 1969 to Jan 1970). He was replaced by Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuels in April 1970. Neil played keyboards pretty often early in his career (e.g. several songs in Buffalo Springfield) and lots of keyboards on his 1st and 3rd solo albums. Not as tight as the Woodstock version but definitely more raw and energetic.
@projectquelle I've actually come across a studio demo a friend sent me. I believe it's from the CSNY box set a few years back. It's a great recording. A bit slower tempo than this, better mix on the vox (though still pretty rough) and a shorter version of the song. Best is Greg's bass. So groovy. Makes your hair stand on end.

First time I've seen Old Neil playing an organ. I'm usually thinking of him as a guitar man, but I guess if you're as prolific a songwriter as he is, you can compose music on any instrument.
This is one song that I haven't heard often, though I think they did another version for the Woodstock concert.
You gotta admit, the whole band, CSNY, seemed to love rockin' to this song, even Graham. Neil and Stephen were rockers, beyond just balladeers and harmonizers. Not to put that down, I enjoy those too. But you can see they dig this song and "Down By The River" too.
I wish I grew up in the 60's, but if you wanna hear a tribute band that does CSNY justice, look up Marrekesh Express. I saw them last summer at a Woodstock tribute concert and they blew me away.

Sea of Madness is Young's song, vocal and organ performance here. Heckler appears half way thru. Crosby reminds him its a free concert and tells him to shut up. Nash offers him the mike. Young calls Stills out, and Stills goes hand to hand with the guy til Dallas and others pull them apart. Some of this audience are seriously messed up.
I agree with blueridger28 a few comments back. Great music is still being made these days, you just have to look for it. Mainstream tv & radio won't deliver it. The cool thing about the 60's was that good innovative music WAS the mainstream.
Also, what were people thinking back then, by taking their small kids to rock concerts. Especially with all the mind altering chemicals doing the rounds.
It may have been cute in the 60's but here in the new millenium the cops woulda beat the shit out of that guy and he would be a registered sex offender.
@Flower7777777Power Man, how did we, in forty short years, go from this to Justin Beiber!

@bookguitarguy Stephen Stills did'nt care about the nudists. He had a good buzz going that day.
Everyone did, How do I know? That's me standing behind Neil at the keyboards rubbing my nose

Supposedly, the version of this song included on the original "Woodstock" soundtrack LP was recorded at the Fillmore East and not at the festival.
