God, you made me come to this world as a black man who plays the bass and got fingers thick as fuck, you just missed one thing... MY NAME IS NOT VIC FUCKIN' WOOTEN
I've been watching Victor Wooten videos on Youtube for maybe 20 minutes and I've already learned so much. What an inspiration! I'm putting down the pick for a little while and learning some double thumb and artificial harmonics :D
To be honest, I've been using it for several years now, but only now did I come across a video that shows somebody else using it. I came across it by accident and started using it wherever I saw it working. This is a major part of my sound and I think I'll try to obtain this dvd.
He's just in hulk mode lol. But I've aways thought of these as "faulse" harmonics. If u flick the string at any fret u can get a way high note compared to a slap, finger or pick depending on where u flick it
da fuck, how is he bending those things so bendy, those strings looks so bendable, i have a pbass and the action is mid, maybe that's why...i cant...just...have...love.
The pickup closest to the bridge is used is because further towards the neck there are nodes of the string (nodes are at integer divisions of the string length -- 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16).
You can easily test this by playing harmonics on an open string -- they will happen at certain points along the string.
When playing harmonics on a non-open string, the string has changed length and the harmonics will occur at different places on the neck but at the same divisions.
Victor is one of those musicians who knows hes amazing but isnt arrogant. Hes the kind of guy who would explain something no matter if its simple or complicated in such a nice way that makes you want to learn how to do it
@redhotsquaredog That is an awesome color indeed. Just buy a Flea bass and have it finished in that color from the manufacturer or strip it down and do it yourself. Post a video of it after it's done. I would love to see that myself!
@BandWill Actually seems to be pretty far from it. With a pinch you use your thumb for the harmonic and index to pluck (well, mostly). Here he just lets the string ring and then later adds the harmonic with his nail. Quite a genious way of doing it I think.
Flea can play very very very very very very very very very very very fast, but Victor Wooten can play very very very very very very very very very very very fast and very very very very very very very very very very very cool :D
@Rise65487 you need to love both of them :D i love the way victor wooten plays i love the way flea plays and they are both very cool :D except victor didnt get naked on stage :D
@Rise65487 You should not forget that Flea DOES know a lot about theory, specially now that he has gone to school, he just won't play it for the Peppers because it's not the bands style, but you can always search for him just fooling around playing the harmionics and all
@Rise65487 Honestly Flea is a great bass player, but he's nowhere near the virtuoso level of someone like Victor Wooten. I never quite understand how he's mentioned as one of the best bassists (on a technical level) in the world. I guess it's just because he's in a popular band.
@excusemebutfuckyou Yeah, but anger is flimsy. It burns hot but burns quick. Victor can/could play with just as much anger and energy, but it always gives way to a more complex groove.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not taking anything away from Flea. He's one mad motha I wish I could emulate even slightly... but he perpetually sits at the knee of Victor, IMO.
@MrSheptical I agree with the fact that technically, Victor is a better bassist. However, Flea's image, playing style/ writing style etc, is perfect for the Chilis and he should really be idolized as much as Victor. By anger, I mean the more punky attitude Flea has. I will always use players like Victor to become a better bassist, but on a performance level, Flea's my guy.

@williamtrevormcneil lots of classical guitarist do it finger style. as do acoustic players. It's not uncommon at all in guitar however its rare in bass.
@lenzveider no its not you idiot how is that in any way offensive or degrading to black people, silly little man you dont even know the definition of racism
