  • God, you made me come to this world as a black man who plays the bass and got fingers thick as fuck, you just missed one thing... MY NAME IS NOT VIC FUCKIN' WOOTEN

  • I haven't even got my bass yet and already learning tricks.

  • Laughing at part "What in the world is going on" lol

  • I would kill to have Vic give me personal lessons.

  • Freaking Genius!

  • Victor is just an Excellent Human being.

  • His bass groove example at the end was the coolest part haha

  • I am not consider a bass player anymore Victor is just to good

  • I've been watching Victor Wooten videos on Youtube for maybe 20 minutes and I've already learned so much. What an inspiration! I'm putting down the pick for a little while and learning some double thumb and artificial harmonics :D

  • OMG

  • "people wont know how you do it!"

well they would victor if you didnt just show us how you do it...

  • The Mars Volta ad? am i the only one seeing thing? do they just send it to my account? best part of the video for me...

  • Yes Mike

  • To be honest, I've been using it for several years now, but only now did I come across a video that shows somebody else using it. I came across it by accident and started using it wherever I saw it working. This is a major part of my sound and I think I'll try to obtain this dvd.

  • What show or DVD is this from??? I would like to buy it if available. Victor knows what he is doing, no doubt about it.

  • What a great bass player and great instructor - would love to spend a few weeks picking his brain, the guy is a genius.

  • saw him bend that string. tried to do the same. destroyed my finger.

  • I used to do this all the time, I didn't realize I had stopped until seeing this video

  • lol thats the same thing as pinch harmonics in metal guitar (that shreek sound)

  • whoa! :)

  • i never thought of that.

  • Its not in that hand...its in THIS hand! There are many creative ways you could use that sentence

  • He's just in hulk mode lol. But I've aways thought of these as "faulse" harmonics. If u flick the string at any fret u can get a way high note compared to a slap, finger or pick depending on where u flick it

  • I can't tell if his string tension is 0 or if he's the incredible hulk

  • Really awesome!!!

  • awsume man

  • ohhhhhh so its like he's doing a bass pick squeal....thats cool as fuck

  • Nice one Mr.Wooten.

  • WTF o.O I would never have thought of that o.O

  • i would like to see victor and derek trucks get together

  • so its just like a pinch harmonic on guitar :D

  • this is like the equivalent of a pinch with a plectrum. skillz innit.

  • da fuck, how is he bending those things so bendy, those strings looks so bendable, i have a pbass and the action is mid, maybe that's why...i cant...just...have...love.

  • The pickup closest to the bridge is used is because further towards the neck there are nodes of the string (nodes are at integer divisions of the string length -- 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16).

You can easily test this by playing harmonics on an open string -- they will happen at certain points along the string.

When playing harmonics on a non-open string, the string has changed length and the harmonics will occur at different places on the neck but at the same divisions.

    'Harmonic series' for more info

  • I want his brain.

  • Problem???

  • Just go to 2.19

  • RRRRriight!

  • I love the way he simplifies music.

  • MOTHER OF GOD

  • 2.09 - 331953 people know how to do it)))

  • mother of god...

  • Wow thats a really cool technique!

  • amazing!

  • Victor is one of those musicians who knows hes amazing but isnt arrogant. Hes the kind of guy who would explain something no matter if its simple or complicated in such a nice way that makes you want to learn how to do it

  • @pivotybob What's his last name? I'm really interested in knowing more about this guy!

  • @pivotybob True, he's basically the total opposite of a guy like Yngwie Malmsteen

  • "Move your fingers around" .. that's what she said... sorry

  • They're also called pinched harmonics. They sound clearer when you have lots of gain as well

  • 8 have no brain

  • I love his black and gold bass! If only they made flea basses with that color option.

  • @redhotsquaredog That is an awesome color indeed. Just buy a Flea bass and have it finished in that color from the manufacturer or strip it down and do it yourself. Post a video of it after it's done. I would love to see that myself!

  • Thank the universe for Jaco Pastorius x

  • I'd go to one of his lessons, i'd be the only one with a guitar. :P

  • wow i always wondered how he bended harmonics

  • 1:00 people are looking for that

  • its just pinch harmonics like on a guitar... on a bass

  • @sadeyes171 no... its just pinch harmonic

  • What takes him 2:44 to say, in his mind he's saying "Bitch I'm playing a sneaky ass pinch harmonic."

  • Thats awesome! :D

  • So, it's basically a pinch harmonic.

  • @BandWill Actually seems to be pretty far from it. With a pinch you use your thumb for the harmonic and index to pluck (well, mostly). Here he just lets the string ring and then later adds the harmonic with his nail. Quite a genious way of doing it I think.

  • It's also known as hitting your Bassy's Gspot

  • so much i ve to learn...

  • simply genius

  • How the hell he discovered that fucking shit there?

  • Jesus Christ. Victor Wooten is ridiculous!

  • wow man victor wootens a great teacher, so well spoken, incredibly good bassist

  • Those are not basses, are trees!!! It's a forest!

  • It's pretty much the same thing as a pinch harmonic on guitar in terms of what is happening to the string.

  • I admire so much Mister Wooten! :)

  • MIND BLOWN. :|

  • What a cool trick.

  • Children, Children sit down and let me teach you

  • where can i find the full video of this session?

  • Comment removed

  • My brain is full of bass-fuck

  • im goin to change ma name

  • pinch harmonic-bass version?

  • @XalltheY It's the same thing essentially. When you pinch on guitar you lightly touch the string with your thumb after your pick hits it :)

  • That mans a genius.

  • I found this video really useful! Thanks :D

  • cool, but for creating a good harmonic i guess u need littlebit more distortion

  • Flea can play very very very very very very very very very very very fast, but Victor Wooten can play very very very very very very very very very very very fast and very very very very very very very very very very very cool :D

  • @Rise65487 you need to love both of them :D i love the way victor wooten plays i love the way flea plays and they are both very cool :D except victor didnt get naked on stage :D

  • @Rise65487 flea sucks ... i dont like him

  • @Rise65487 You should not forget that Flea DOES know a lot about theory, specially now that he has gone to school, he just won't play it for the Peppers because it's not the bands style, but you can always search for him just fooling around playing the harmionics and all

  • @Rise65487 why do you even compare them

  • Comment removed

  • @Rise65487 they can play both very fast and very cool it's just what kind of style you like. so it's very stupid to compare them douche!

  • @TheBasje1993 Yeah, Fleas funk is more punk...

  • @vitormbf18 not more. it's just a combination ;)

  • @TheBasje1993 xD yeah u right

  • @Rise65487 Honestly Flea is a great bass player, but he's nowhere near the virtuoso level of someone like Victor Wooten. I never quite understand how he's mentioned as one of the best bassists (on a technical level) in the world. I guess it's just because he's in a popular band.

  • @Rise65487 Flea's all about energy and anger whilst Victor's the grooviest mother going. Both great performers no sense in comparing.

  • @excusemebutfuckyou Yeah, but anger is flimsy. It burns hot but burns quick. Victor can/could play with just as much anger and energy, but it always gives way to a more complex groove.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not taking anything away from Flea. He's one mad motha I wish I could emulate even slightly... but he perpetually sits at the knee of Victor, IMO.

  • @MrSheptical I agree with the fact that technically, Victor is a better bassist. However, Flea's image, playing style/ writing style etc, is perfect for the Chilis and he should really be idolized as much as Victor. By anger, I mean the more punky attitude Flea has. I will always use players like Victor to become a better bassist, but on a performance level, Flea's my guy.

  • my good

  • "...and no one will know how you do it." (until now) Great question.

    Thanks Victor for the answer.

  • Amazing bass player! Actual talent

  • This is extremely awesome. Victor Wooten continues to amaze me. I wish he would teach me :(

  • aren't this very similar to pinch harmonics?

  • @BennyJ69 yeaup. actually i didnt know you could do that on bass, but i guess that's why victor's the boos and not me lol

  • FINGER STRENGHT FTW! Look at 2:40 and forth, that's just insane.

Victor me motivo mucho mas. Solo hay que buscarle si se puede.

  • I love how Victor is generous with his knowledge--a true teacher.

  • @OrisLover he really is. you can watch any video.

  • he's very clear and funny

  • how he can bed a low E string on a bass guitar like that is totally beyond me.

  • @TheDustyPanther haha I know. My finger hurt just watching it

  • What in the world is going on!

  • so its basically a pinch harmonic but with your fingers instead of a pick?

thats fucking incredible, never thought that was possible finger-style

  • @williamtrevormcneil lots of classical guitarist do it finger style. as do acoustic players. It's not uncommon at all in guitar however its rare in bass.

  • thats fucking sick

  • That is a really cool looking fretboard

  • When I grow older I want to become black.

  • @LouisHaynes2 Another one who makes stupid comments....and the list keeps adding up.....

  • @vzuani How about humor ? Do you have any ?

  • @LouisHaynes2 I was black once.

  • @LouisHaynes2 That's not racist at all. When I get older I want to be Victor Wooten.

  • @LouisHaynes2 :thatsracist:

  • @lenzveider no its not you idiot how is that in any way offensive or degrading to black people, silly little man you dont even know the definition of racism

  • @LouisHaynes2 it comes with bigger dick... you've been warned!

  • @LouisHaynes2 In the words of Eric Cartman: "Tolken. How many times do we have to go through this? You're black. You can play the bass."

  • yeah, yeah, "no one will know how you do it" Victor, besides 222,322 people that viewed this video on youtube

  • What a good guy. Great explanation.

  • Bending strings level Wooten

  • Wooten's a fcking brute

  • how does he pop off the string so well at 1:12?

  • so cool!

  • I wanna buy a bass now!!!

  • @SuperNesmaster Do it!

  • Everybody with a 5 or 6 string bass and only Victor with a 4 one...

Strings don't say if you're good or if you're bad !

  • That is surgical precision. Maybe even past surgical precision.

  • bass squeely!!

  • i susually mute the string with my thumb. but its kind of the same concept with the one i was thinki8ng about.. Victor Wooten my number one bassist bros, hes the real man for the thing.

  • "what in the world is going on" love it.......he is so good

  • OH yea,try to play my crapy cinese or mexican made bass and get harmonics, wtf? no many people is going to afford to have a bass like you.So what you talk about? say hey rich guys!I've got a nice way to sell this shit to YOU.ha?

  • @MateoProductios wtf man? i think there is problem in you...i have crapy basses also and i can play it...

  • victor w0:00ten

  • Amazing...

  • look at those insane hands he would dent your face by stroking it, i bet he combs his hair just with his hands, nothing else. thats how metal he is.

  • bump wuooouuunggg.. bump wuoooouuuunggg....

  • Bass magician XD... cool!!!

  • As much as I respect Victor, I wouldn't wanna shake hands with him... He'd break all the bones in my hand... How dafuq can he bend the strings like that, and even on the 3rd fret...?! That's unpossible...

  • @NowaTunes And if you pick him up, surely he'll beat the the shit out of ya... His fist must be even stronger than Mike Tyson's...

  • It is so hard to get those kind of harmonics on a bass, so much respect

  • I like doing these on the guitar and on the bass :D

  • those basses look so expensive

  • Victor Wooten has a nice bass guitar, though his pickups isd more liker on jazz bass.

  • So, it's like a pinch harmonic except you slap it, wtf I've been making harmonics on my classical guitar with my P this whole time as a joke. At least it comes in handy on bass now. XD

  • I know how he's doing it now i know what he's doing haha

  • ... Armónico

  • @maujafer87 The video title is in portuguese, so it's "HARmonico", the same way it's been written there.

  • the name of my bass is Chuck Norris kkkkkkkkk

  • Good lord...some musicians really pushing their instruments and skills to the extreme. Chapeau!

  • Victor, You are are more than just a fantastic bass player. You are an icon, and an icon who will teach others how to get there. You made me strive to not be better than you, but to just be better then I was yesterday. Thank You~!

  • uh?...wow i though this will be something more interesting

  • @RHCPTABOO hey there, you probably don't know where it's coming from ... check this out watch?v=iwwZuakWECM ...

and wooten is right, i was really like oOwtf?! myself the first time ...

now, how'd he do that?? heres the answer!

  • @daLom well...i knew where ir came from...i play guitar so i kinda know something...but i really though it was going to be something more interesting...im starting to play bass...n this was like obvious for me

  • @RHCPTABOO i see ... it wasn't to me ... anyways good choice to switch instruments (or at least to start bass, too!) :]

  • @daLom ohh don't worry...sorry for writing like an idiot:/

  • I don't even play bass and this is fascinating.

  • this is so helpfull :O

  • artifical harmonic is all this is, guitar players use it all the time, example zakk wylde. never seen it on a bass, very cool

  • @g8299 bass is cooler than guitar :3

  • @g8299 you need to check out what Jaco Pastorious was doing with this.

  • @ChaseSchieferPhotos Exactly :-) Intro of Birdland, or Three Views of a Secret
