  • same i have a lot of hats:)

  • Wow! I think it is so kind that you are so open, considerate, and thoughtful for the rest of us. I am from a big city myself and find it sad that there seem to be some sheltered or insecure folks out there that don't realize there are many different people in the world to learn from. What if everyone was the same? Ick!Human beings are precious, and as women who care for life, I feel this catty aggression should be far less tolerated ever. Take what you like and leave the rest.It was a gift, love:)

  • YES! Someone who FINALLY has an intrest in thrift shops. ALL the kids in my school wear stuff like Aeropostal and Hollister and Jordans and I am literally THE ONLY ONE that doesn't really have an intrest in name brands, as long as the clothing is good quality I'm fine. Love the gloves by the way:)

  • I love your style, i also have my own style. my friends always wants to have the best brands. But i loveee other clothes then them.

  • Century 21 haha! I know you meant Forever 21 but that was cute!! Forever 21 is a great store. Love you and your videos :)

  • @FM897 Thanks hun! But I really did mean Century 21. It's a HUGE chaotic store in NY. It's kinda like an upgrade from Ross and Marshalls as they have more higher end stuff. :)

  • @MakeupByRisa Hmmmm, did not know that, I'm so sorry!! I only know Century 21 as a real estate firm O.o

  • @FM897 lol its okay. How would you know? Not everyone has been to NY. If you ever do though, definitely check it out - just stay AWAY on fridays or the weekends. It's a madhouse.

  • @MakeupByRisa Well, embarrassingly, I live in NY. I just can't remember ever seeing a Century 21 store, but then again, I don't go shopping that often.

  • i have the exact same earings!! i actually bought a pair in every color, and wear them in different color combos. blue and purple... black and silver.. you get the point :p

  • youre resourceful! i love multi purposing items, products, etc...Make it your own style. You have a good eye for things,,,,i presume you do makeup as well? professionally i mean. i could see you doing this...and gaining a following. you dont have a conceited vibe and you have a comfortable way of speaking.

  • WAO RISA UR STYLE IS AWESOME... IT'Z AS U SAID VERY 80'S KINDA.. AND I EXTREMLY LOVE IT...

  • I agree but you pay for quailty items.

  • Que estilo tiene para hablar esta mujer, ni una palabra más alta que la otra y veinte minutos sin parar.

  • I can't stand Stacy London/What Not To Wear. They take away peoples' individuality and make them look so "normal."

You have an amazing face. You can wear little makeup, and look just stunning.

    <3 Chynna Doll

  • i love ur style and tj max ! :D

  • I like your style especially your hats. There is this famous hat store in SF where Mayer Willie Brown bought his hats. I forget the name but they have awesome hats there.

  • u totally smart !

  • ohh shyt... yu live in ny.?

    me2.

    i livee in queenz.

  • I agree SO MUCH about Stacy London and What Not To Wear. They dress everyone exactly the same, it's like their rules are so uniform/cookie cutter and don't allow for any quirks or personality. It's as if they have everyone looking like they stepped out of a really ugly, boring catalogue.

I love all of your gloves by the way : )

  • Yay, Risa. I love how you are true to yourself. Style is absolutely personal. Sometimes I am very monochromatic and business like and sometimes I am quirky. I feel I know what looks good on me and it can be vintage, home sewn, expensive designer whatever. I like what I like and its many things and varied. The best compliment I ever got was "you are funny you dont have a set style but everything wear looks cute on you." Everyone should wear whatever looks good on them.

  • this is a great video and ur style is great

  • I just discovered you but OMG what you did with your shirts was awesome!

  • Thanks hun! It's REALLY easy to do and quite addicting. Boys always get better prints on shirts (IMO) which is what lead me to learning how to alter them :)

  • Starting something off with "I dont want to be rude but...", and ending it with "sorry", doesn't make it any less rude. You're absolutely right, a video about personal style is not original. Where did I say it was? I missed that part...And yes, I'm well aware others may deem my style "awful", but I like it, so they can kick rocks, as can you. Take your negativity & be gone.

  • It is rude, you're not sorry and it doesn't matter if you find it awful or not orginal.

  • You do not have to insult her. That is not constructive criticism at all.

  • her as in kukulik101

  • I LOVE your style! Awesome - do more! : )

  • Off all the things you showed that was from H&M, I only recognized 1, maybe 2, items.. And I live in Sweden, and H&M is from sweden. I'm so jealous of the US for getting all the fun stuff haha...

  • jag håller verkligen me!! I agreeeeeeeeeee

  • Comment removed

  • clothing in the US, and basically everything is so cheap. shopping in australia is just so expensive. things at goodwill and the salvos are obviously cheaper, but i paid $20 for an old wedding dress i wore to my friends dress up party.

  • amen. I moved to AUS about a year and half ago and I was shocked at how much clothing is. Unless you shop at salvos or valleygirl, you're going to spend a fortune. . .even at target lol

  • i totally agree. i love crossroads and wasteland. my mom was the same way as your mom. we didn't have a whole bunch of money to spend on extravagant clothes. and now that i make my own money and buy my own clothes, i still shop how my mom tough me, clearance and reasonable. i dig your style. its unique and awesome.

  • I love to have a monochrome, grayscale outfit accessorized with colors. :D

  • The store on Haight you're talking about: Buffalo Exchange.

Lately, I've been shopping at thrift stores. The one down the street has different discount days. You'll find me there every Wednesday in the morning to the afternoon. B/c it's 50% LOL

  • Thnks for giving us all these great suggestions and tips!

I am in LOVELOVELOVE with your gloves!

    Oh, swoon! lol.

I am now on a hunt until I find something even remotely close. =)

  • sometimes thrift stores are awesome but sometimes its ridiculous trying to shop in that environment. Its like shopping at forever 21- overwhelming.

  • okay let me add...I hate that show too lol! and you look fabulous dahling!

thank u for style vids...we are all about it over here lol

  • i hate how i've been without a computer for days and i am late on ALL your vids!

  • Well said.

  • risa, love your style and your attitude towards fashion. you are an amazing girl. x

  • Love H&M with passionnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • do you have any other simple ways of altering tops to fit? it's just that i am not as confident with my body as you, and so wouldnt be comftable showing my back off :(, if you do that would be great

  • What I do is I cut two lines down each side of the shirt under the armpit and then then cut a series of half inch wide short strips. Then I tie them together. This is a great way to do it because if the shirt's reeaallly big, you can take a couple inches off each side before doing this and then play with the sleeves and neckline. I hope that makes sense, sort of hard to type it out!

  • oh yes i agree. i don't like having other peoples names on my clothes either.

  • wow i noticed u wear a lot of purple! lols

  • Thanks for sharing!! I really love your knecklaces :)

  • your style is very different from mine but i like the whole idea of seeing the potential in things i think that is a really good way to look at things in life

  • thats exactly how i feel about style... but unlike u i think that its cuz ive grown up in the dakotas where if u want to go to a mall or even a walmart u have to do a little bit of traveling to get there... so there are a lot of pawn shops and thrift stores and antique stores that i shop at

  • Risa, what do you do to stay so trim? Your skin and hair always look so healthy and your figure is fantastic. I struggle with being trim and yet remaining healthy-- any tips?

  • omg she bugs me too

  • i love haight street, they have the best clothing shops. the clothes are nice and affordable

  • you're really creative! i'm really big on accessorizing too and i also don't really like to wear really expensive things that are expensive for no reason. i don't do so much DIY stuff, though, just because i'm not really crafty like that haha. and i don't like what not to wear either... i never like the outfits that they put together for people.. but sometimes i can be inspired by their perspective on what certain colors and cuts do for your body.

  • i really like you :) you inspire me so much.

i would've never thought of making broken necklaces into some other accessory.

i love your curtains, by the way :P

    <3 much love from Canada

  • i love your style!

  • omg i hate that show "what not to wear" it's so fake and scripted

  • omg they dress EVERYONE the same in what not to wear!! its never the person's style, just what they want to put on them. makes me so angry.

  • I'm 28, 29 in November :) - highschool c/o 98 so yea, we're around the same age :)

  • You've gonna love bargin sales. It is always awesome to bargin and see what's on sale and on clearence. It's so much fun to find what's around because you can always mix and match. Be creative and be you and that's what you are doing!! KEEP IT UP!

  • I LOVE your curtains!!

    Where'd you get them?!

  • FINALLY someone who realizes that they have international viewers! Even though youtube is full of Americans, it's still an international site, and someone like me from Norway can be watching. Thank you Risa :)

  • Another vierwer from Norway here.. ;)

  • i love the background. you should do that in your videos... woot, a style video. love the gloves! i love forever 21...

  • I always shop clearance. You can have more clothes that way! Get like ten shirts that are 50 dollars compared to one 50 dollar shirt thats name brand.

  • I think what not to wear is really good in regards to fit, even though they dress them kind of boring sometimes. You are lucky you aren't allergic to nickel! I can't wear any of those kind of earrings for that reason, even though I see really cute cheap ones!

  • i love your ideas on fashion..i usually only buy things on sale..one of my favorite accessories i own are piano suspenders from hot topic that were marked down %75 from $10 :)

  • oh and love the fact u support thrift store shopping its good for so many reasons personal expression being the best reason but if u don't use it it fills up our land fills just one more reason to be unique

  • hey there love what you do keep it up, im from the uk and are second hand shops are really bad the good ones are hard to find so i have to go to high street shops and end up looking like every one else, tried out your top deconstruction step by step video and loved it affective and simple something i would use over and over gain

  • Thanks! Urban Outfitters, like 3 years ago, on sale - $5 a panel ;)

  • Thanks for the resources Risa! Half the fun of looking good is finding or making your pieces!

  • Stacey London drives me crazy too! What's with the grey skunk stripe in her hair?! hahah

  • It's a bithmark.

some people have lack of pigment in a certain part of their hair.

  • it's albino hair...

  • your awesome, Risa. <3 :D

  • I love your style. Could you possibly put all the websites you talked about in the side, if you cant no problem.

  • I am like you, I match the rest of my outfit to one item and I'm a accessory junkie, and I especially love gloves. My favourite pair is a pair of lace ones that I've had for years that I unfortunately need to find a replacement for soon 'cause they have a lot of holes in them. Those black leather gloves are so gorgeous, I really need to hunt down a pair.

  • I have the same black leather with lace fingerless gloves - love love love them! ;)

  • This video gave me a lot of hope that not everyone in the world is a lifeless, personality-less lemming. You share a lot of my views, and i agree wholeheartedly on everything you said in this video. Also i drooled over 98% of your necklaces, your style is PHENOMENAL. <3

  • i dont have a ross, the closest one is like 2 and a half hours and im not even sureif there is one maybe just nordstroms! tjmax is 35 min away too!

  • Places like Ross are definitely where my Mom took my sisters and I growing up as well. I may have hated it when I was younger, but I definitely enjoy hunting around the store for those great finds today :) Also, I love your gloves!

  • very cute video. I like styling and making things and change stuff I buy into something else, and I like your tips (you really made me wanna cut some shirts :-P) Your style is really ME- a few years ago I was dressing exactly like you,... I became a little boring I guess :-P

Show us other tricks like cutting shirts and stuff. I really like this. You are very creative, this is awesome! *thumbs up*

  • hahah stacy from what not to wear drives me crazy too!! iono but she's so annoying! haha

  • You said it Risa! I love this video. <3

  • I love second hand shops!!:)

You can find there clothes that are unique:)

These stores are also good to find bags and belts cheaper than you think:):)

  • I shop at thrift stores! It's the thrill of the hunt for me! My husband had never been to a thrift store before we met. And now he wont shop anywhere else. I like wearing things that other people don't have!

    Great vid!

  • Do you realize how inspiring you are?

  • honestly i could care less that i shop at Ross, but i do love singing "i got it at Ross" when someone asks me where i got something

  • same here!!! yesterday i went shopping at dd's discount and ross. i got sooo much stuff and it came out to be like $140.

  • My mom raised me shopping at the Ventura thrift stores and im so glad she did. I find things at thrift stores that I could never find in a store at the mall or whereever. love this video.

  • People are so into name brands these days that the second I say "Thrift Store." People are lookin' at me like, What the hell is a thrift store?

You and I were raised the same way, why should I pay for over-priced, low-quality name brand items just so a company can get free advertisement"?

  • lololoooove the earrings!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Filene's Basement on Michigan Ave. in Chicago as well... it's still a wee bit expensive for yours truly :]

  • thank you for sharing! i am an earring freak! i got some good ideas and i really love your style. my style has always been kind of plain but earrings are my trademark. i love h & m! i loved them even more when i found out they were big boob friendly. :) oh and sales are your friend!

  • CENTURY 21!! love that place :)

Why are the designs on men t-shirts so much cooler that the ones on women t-shrts >.>

  • I LOVE your style! It's your own. I have a friend that copies everything I buy when it comes to clothes and I end up not even wanting to wear the stuff. I can't say anything cuz I think that would be so mean, I just can't have my own style around her :( ANYWAY, love the fingerless gloves too! I love cutitng off fingers of gloves and making my own : )

  • If you live in a larger city in the US, Craigslist is a great resource for used clothing, especially if you like name brands. There are a lot of people who buy name brand clothing and shoes and then have to sell stuff later (especially when the cc bill comes in haha). Why pay full price for something when you can get it on CL for 1/10th the price? Most items are new or very lightly used! Plus, you can find all kinds of "unique" and interesting things. I buy whatever fits well and looks good!

  • I'm having a hard time finding gloves :(

  • your style rocks :)

  • designer jeans are obnoxious in my opinion. My sister on one hand has no choice sometimes because she's so tall and skinny lots of jeans don't fit her. But people just buy those jeans because there's a label on the back.

  • Also my parents never really indulged in letting my brother, sister & I go crazy with clothes. The only time I remember them giving in was when A&F was all the rage, and that only lasted a couple years in terms of the fad. Anything designer that I own now was bought w/ my own money. I would never dare ask my parents to spend $200 on a single pair of jeans, that's ridiculous.

  • I love your style. My parents were never anal about that so I use to be a label whore in middle school. LOL. One question, where did you get your curtains?

  • hahah i know exactly what you mean about "what not to wear"

  • haha i'm pretty much the same as you, my parents never saw any need in buying anything for me & my brother from anywhere but thrift stores or wal-mart. i didn't really mind though because i'd have brand name stuff handed down to me from my cousins :). now though, i'm pretty much the same, a couple brand name things here and there, but only if they were on sale haha :)

  • Love it, great video idea!

  • I wish I was more creative and was able to see potential in pieces. But I'm not. haha. Anyways, your style is super cute.

I wish I could say I dislike the name brand idea, but I really can't.. I love name brand things.. I don't know why. But I can also find things that I wear a lot that aren't name brand. It just all depends.

  • Love that you did this video! Years ago when I was in high school/college, I thought that you HAD to buy expensive clothing to look really good...because that's what my friends did, and that's what I saw in the magazines. Now that I'm in my late 20's, inexpensive stores like H&M, Forever21, TJMaxx, etc are all the rage! And guess what? I get MORE complements with those thrifty purchases than ever before! :)

  • ed hardy is so tacky. I love thrift stores too. I never buy anything on retail price :)

  • Great job! I dislike the name brand thing, too. Why should I pay to advertise for some brand? It doesn't mean anything to have a company name on your butt. It stands for nothing except making people who can't afford it feel bad. I don't get why that's enjoyable to some people. Why not say something about yourself instead? Express your own values or interests, not some megacorp's!

I love your videos, and I think you're pretty awesome, too!

  • Love your approach on this, the whole concept of personal style is lost on so many.

    Great video. :]

  • risa,can we see your hats??: )

  • omg i really wanna see how you cut up the shiny pants :D

  • Cool, wish we had a lot of that stuff here in Australia!

Can you do a vid sometime that's something along the lines of "A week of outfits"? Doesn't have to be long, I'd just love to see what hair/makeup/outfit you'd wear in a typical week.

Love the vids, keep it up!

  • yeah. what not to wear annoys me sometimes.

  • im in love with that necklace from the street vendor ... its so pretty and funky

  • I love how I watch this while WNTW is on the television... ha. I still LOVE that show. They're good.

  • I totally love the idea of putting the sad remnant of lost earring in your hair. Too bad I threw one of my favourites out when I moved a few weeks ago :(

  • love the gloves, where can i get them or simular

  • watch and listen more carefully

  • haha i had just posted the comment when she said it,but thanks anyway

  • I'm just like your mum LOL I do not like buying clothes where the brand is super big and visible, if they want me to be a moving advert for them they better pay me, I'm not paying for that :P

  • I WISH I could say that about myself! Well, as for MY clothes...I can say that. the only splurge that I make is for Silver jeans b/c..as Risa said "when you find ones that fit..". So yeah..I AM guilty of paying $80 for those but I do try to find them cheaper.

  • Now..when it comes to my kids..I am sooo guilty of being a label whore or making THEM label whores..LOL. My mom was like Risa's and its one thing that always stuck with me so I always want to give my kids the labels. Sad..I know. Truthfully..my kids dont even care. They'll dirty up a Abercrombie shirt as quick as they will one from wal mart! lol

  • I love ross. And I hate sparkles and shit on my jeans.

  • Is there a Ross for Less in New York? I looked it up and it said there was one in New Jersey but I'm not sure about Long Island. Which sucks cause I like shopping there.

  • omg Risa i love that outfit so much ur style is so unique and awesome thanks 4 the tips

  • I SO agree with you...I'm constantly looking to see how I can change something, or make it my own...and most importantly...on the cheap! You really don't need to pay alot of money for a great look, you just have to be creative!

  • i agree with you 100%, i don't like to look like everyone else. for me i like to stand out but in a good way.

  • love KARMAL00P =)

  • lolll i loooove century 21!!! one of my favs.

  • wear what makes you happy!!!ttotally agree with you.......and i love your style.........it is unique....

  • love this!

  • "why are you paying a company so you can advertise for them." :)

it always makes me giggle when people say they like my style, I just wear jeans and a tee shirt.

  • YES! Thank you Josh because apparently I couldn't say what I wanted to lol
