  • I simply don't know why some people are bitching over whether or not Les Mis' is a stage show or a concert,or that the book is 1000 plus pages. It's popularity is evident in that it's celebrated 25 years recently.Surely millions of people around the globe having seen it,some more than once, is testament to it's attraction! And maybe some people will be encouraged to read the book,so it will have served that purpose too.I've seen it 3 times & it's appeal is undiminished for me.

  • who the hell got the idea to turn one of the greatest novels ever written into a musical? stupid idea, as you simply can't fit a 1,000-plus page novel into a 3 hour stage show (and it's not even a proper stage show, just people in front of microphones, singing; that's a CONCERT, NOT a Broadway show).

  • @AncientHistoryBuff Have you even seen it? It might not be in as much detail as the book, but it's still very moving. And it's a musical, where people sing to tell a story. Therefore, it's a musical, not a concert. You can't slag it off because it's also a book, and the book is really long etc, because even though they may have missed out a lot of details, the story is still there, and the songs are amazing.

  • @EverywhereLemons, i enjoyed The Phantom Of The Opera, which is based on a book (but the stage show and 2004 movie are so much better).

  • @AncientHistoryBuff If they were in front of microphones it's probsbly because you were watching the anniversary concerts. And they weren't ever trying to put all 1000+ pages into the musical, they were just trying to translate the story to the stage.

  • @HomestarYoshi, doesn't work.

  • 24 people disliked this? How can this be? This is one of the most beautiful and heart wrenching songs ever written. Not to mention it is sung immaculately. I will never understand people.

  • Lea Michele's version is the best !

  • Hmm....this sounds better than the first time I heard it. Her voice sounds real and the overall emotion would be sadness and disappointment. Compared to Lea's version which was the first one I heard, Lea's was more of a angry-disappointed tone. Both versions are good.

  • and they think taylor swift can pull this off. Idiots

  • Im actually doing an audition next week, and this is gonna be my song. And one day, this part will be mine:D

  • Hands down favorite performance of this song. Her voice has a certain grit and depth that her successors lack. I buy her pain.

  • No One can beat Lea Salonga (Disneys Legend)

  • Someday. This is going to be me

  • I much prefer this recording of her than the one on the OBC soundtrack. Her voice kind of annoys me sometimes, something about her inflection and enunciation, but this one is much better.

  • I never cared for Ruffelle or her rendition of this song...but it's the youthful sound in her voice that I feel is key to the casting of the Eponine role in the film. I know everyone is pushing for Lea Michele, and she's great but sounds too mature. Eponine needs to sound like she's 14-16...like Ruffelle does.

  • Don't worry Eponine, I know how you feel... :(

  • this makes me think about the guy that i like and i want to sing it to him and maybe he would understand my feelings for him

  • i love lea salonga's strong belty version but this feels much more sweet and real to me

  • Nothing can beat a good musical.

  • not my favourite version, but still a beautiful song :)

  • NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT LES ANGLAIS super sweet and sentimental version ...French is good - the German version! WOW!!

  • a perfect blend of innocence, youth, and inexperience making Rufelle's version of Eponine natural and true to character. Her voice will makes grown men cry and women envious

  • Maybe because she's the first Eponine I ever heard, or maybe because she's just the best, but she's the only Eponine I can listen to.

  • I once sang this for singing lessons...whenever I hear Les Mis songs I think of American Psycho

  • It's a life long dream of mine to even sing as Eponine. I will be eternally gratful to anyone who ever offers me that oppertunity. She is such an inspiring character, and I think she is the most amazing soul who ever roamed the world of fiction. She is my favourite, if you haven't already noticed XD

  • I do love Lea Salonga but Frances made this role

  • <33333333333333 nuff said

  • Whenever I try to sing songs like this, I cry and my voice sounds bad. :P

  • Emotional but sounds more of a pop song, not a theatrical one. Just an opinion though.

  • So many figure skaters have utilized this gorgeous composition. This version is the best. Thank you for posting. Best Wishes to ALL.

  • i dont ke the other ones this one is the best frances ruffles is a good epine thumbs up if im right

  • This is beautiful. I actually hadn't heard her until recently, as I grew up with the 'full orchestrated version'. I love the Eponine on there, but Frances is great too. I did a cover of this song (I posted a video) and wish I'd had more time to listen to this version before I did so. Some great stuff.

  • I think the most definitive quality of Eponine is her longing. Frances Ruffelle captures that brilliantly.

  • Frances Ruffelle's voice was truly made to be heard as Eponine's. There's such heartache in this version that no other artist seems to be able to pull off! :'D

  • The most book-verse version I've heard so far!

  • I love Lea Salonga but I'll give my hats off to Frances Rufelle as Eponine. She's the original and the only one who can pull this one off. The emotion and the vulnerability of her character is there. It's just amazingly emotional.

  • the version of miss saigon (lea salonga) is still the best..^^

  • 3:05

  • whoaaaaa. SUPER GOOSEBUMPS! i LOVE the husk in her voice! it's SO eponine!

  • my favorite version!

  • beautful:)

  • This is a better eponine indeed (the frailty of her voice suits the character better). THIS recorded version. The one she sang live at this show I watched.....it sucked big time. So weird

  • I think have different lyrics to this song....Just in the beginning...

  • now i know where my downloaded copy came from. bit disappointing for the original london cast, especially at 2:25 where most of the notes are sharp.

  • I can't bear to listen to anyone else sing this song apart from Frances Ruffelle. She just sings with such emotion and loneliness that in my mind, she is Eponine.

  • her rendition is beautiful...haunting, and full of emotions. like someone telling you a tragic story. it's the best version in my opinion.

  • I am a huge fan of Les Mis. I did a junior version of this production, and it was so much fun!

  • im sorry but i dont like this girls voice at all

im a huge lea salonga fan, and i dont like this version at all.

  • I always admired this song, and I sung it for a vocal competition.

My range could handle this and I did fairly well. The instructor critizied me because I didnt have enough "emotion"...maybe cause I was sooo nervous my heart was in my throat.

All in all wonderful song...felt her pain before. No bueno.

  • I absolutely love the way Lea sings this (Frances Ruffelle too) but I do agree that this fits better with the book Éponine.

  • This song reminds me a lot of Kate Bush's "Wow", even the vocals sound like Kate Bush.

  • Beautiful voice, but I don't really get any emotion from it... :/ I like Lea & Kaho better, but that's just my opinion :)

  • omg i luv this song

  • I love her sweet voice and the emotive quality of expressing the essence of the song.

  • I hated Frances Ruffelle the first few times I heard this song, but now I think she captures the desperation really well.

  • @rachel869 Which is why she's a famous singer, and you're an anonymous troll. :D

  • @randomname21212 Hahahhaa, I would hardly say 'troll'. And everyone has a right to an opinion ;)

  • @rachel869 says you

  • i think Lea is better, no offence to Frances fans

  • I love this song!!!!!

  • WHEN are they going to do a movie for the musical?! I can't wait to see this show on tour in January!!! :)

  • Definitely the best version of On My Own. Never getting tired of this song. Musicals live on!

  • i was there. her voice and performance are simply to fall in love with. Bravo!

  • lea salonga also great being eponine

  • I'm waiting for hollywood to wake up and realize that a filmed musical of les miserables would get so much higher ratings than all the crap they're feeding us... I mean, come on! the only work they'd have to do is sets and finding people who could sing the parts! they don't have to try too hard with costumes, cuz everyone knows what to expect with each character and it would be like they're already designed, and most of the script is all there for them in the songs! they just need to do it!

  • @GhostofAlarae They made a (really shitty) movie a while back... Eponine wasn't even in it. I read that, but I never saw the movie... too scared.

  • @GhostofAlarae ill probably never get the change to see it on stage so yeah, they really should

  • @GhostofAlarae you have more trust in Hollywood than I do, apparently. I'm not sure if I can stand one more botched screen version of Javert's suicide... and there's always the possibility they would cast for "marketability" (meaning an entire cast that is pretty to look at but can't act or sing)...

I want a guarantee I can have my money back if I leave before the halfway point... in fact, that should apply to all films nowadays.

  • I don't like her. she sounds like a 5 year old. No power at all. and very whiney:/

  • France's voice is warm, inviting, powerful, and really represents eponine of course her diction is off because eponine is suppose to have a low class street accent. cosette is suppose to have the conventional soprano sound not eponine her sound is suppose to have sorrow and spunk to it just like the character eponine france is amazing as eponine

  • I had chills from 3:35...

  • the original london cast recording is the best

  • I've always thought 3:16 - 3:21 on this particular recording was THE best portion of this song ever sung. I love Frances' vibrato on those hard "e" sounds. Some will say it is too nasal, but I think it absolutely makes the song - the haunting "ring" in the nasal voice and vibrato there is so powerful to me. It makes you believe she's in agony. No other singer I've heard has been able to do that, probably because it's really hard to do vocally and probably not "technically correct.

  • Although this is a really good version of the song, I am looking for the girl who was recorded for the official Les Mis site, lesmiserables. com I can't find her :(, does anyone recognize her? Or is it a younger Frances Ruffelle? The voices do kind of sound alike. Please help!

  • @FrenchFrie666 This is the original one.....yup...the 1st and original cast/recording....

  • @isal3 Thanks a bunch! :D I'll try to find a mp3 of that recording, now that I'm sure what to look for. :)

  • @FrenchFrie666 This was the original london.

  • I've heard this version, or this light, quiet yet emotional voice, in so many recordings on Youtube and iTunes, besides Lea Salonga. I read this is Frances Ruffelle, and would she and Lea Salonga be the only found On My Owns on Youtube besides home-made videos or school performances?

  • I do and I don't like this version.

There's something annoying about it, but also something moving and true about it, at the same time.

    X's

  • I get chills every time I hear this song.

  • She really could have been better if she wasn't so obnoxious. I really do not care what others say. I would have been really ticked off if I had paid like $40 to listen to this crap.

  • Comment removed

  • @Kroglander Well, I saw your comment regardless if you removed it. I do have taste, in fact, much taste to not like this. Her dictation is awful and she tries to turn this strong, powerful, moving show into a rock show, and I know that this was in the late 80's, but come on. I totally don't even like to talk about Ruffelle in Les Miserables anymore.

  • Ms. Ruffelle is the quintessential Eponine!!! Magnificent!!!

  • @NorCalCounsel She has a fantastic voice. The best.

  • Stunning and moving!

  • Patrick Bateman from American Psycho was right, the London Cast is the best!

  • This is by FAR the best version of this song, in my opinion :D

  • ForkskindaDay -- This is the original London cast version from the actual musical score ( re. the beginning lyrics ) - I think the other lyrics were written for the International Recording and/or Broadway version :)

  • FACT: this was 2pac's FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME (i know you don't believe me, but it's TRUE)

  • @casperlok2dbrain pac has good taste in music

  • lea salonga is better than this one because her diction was clearer and amazing

  • there is like, two different beginings to this song are they both right ways to sing it?

  • @ForkskindaDay ForkskindaDay -- This is the original London cast version from the actual musical score ( re. the beginning lyrics ) - I think the other lyrics were written for the International Recording and/or Broadway version :)

  • I almost feel like the phrases are cut short and her version has more sliding than Lea Salonga.

But i love how she hits the high notes

However, I think nothing can compare with LEA SALONGA's version!

  • im goin to NYSMA and doin this song i luv it!!!!

  • I prefer Lea Salonga's version. I dont feel the emotion in Frances' rendition like there is a need for a little fine tuning in her voice. It sounds amateurish to me.

  • @roncerod i think lea and frances were interpreting this song in very different ways. lea's version is harder, making eponine sound bitter about the situation she's in. frances' version is more vulnerable, like a little girl lost. not saying one is better than the other, just that it's hard to compare when two different emotions are being conveyed in the same song. i love both of them by the way!

  • I also prefer Frances Ruffelle! she puts so much passion into it, I cry everytime I listen!

  • This is my favourite version. :)

  • leah salonga is the best!

  • love this song its the best

  • such a gorgeous song!

she sings with such emotion, especially the final "i love him"s. absolutely spectacular!

  • Wow! So powerful, emotional and soulful. I think this is perhaps the best version I've heard with Lea Salonga's a close second

  • Frances Ruffelle is so so amazing. I love her Eponine, and really do think that it's the best, most true to the book Eponine. Her voice is so gorgeous and emotive, it has this husky, honey-coated quality to it. <3

  • I prefer this more because the flawless english and rawness of it. Lea is great power and range wise, but her version is too obvious with English flaws.

Nothing necessarily wrong with that? But it takes away from the solemnity of the scene

This is a better version because it's raw as the scene is supposed to be.

  • I love frances ruffelle as eponine! i love the emotion and the sense of passion, longing, and pain she puts into the character. In my opinion, no other eponine has compared to that.

  • So beautiful. I love this song.

  • This is so beautiful! So much feeling. So sad! Powerful performance! Thanks for uploading!!

  • I love frances ruffelle's version. it gets me everytime... she sings it with such believable emotion.

  • Sorry... Love lea michele's much more... It has more feeling™

  • @MattyPInDaHouse really i think this version has more feeling its more sad dnt get me wrong lea has an amazing but it really dsnt add as much feeling as this version

  • really love her voice!

  • i'm addicted to this song <3

  • I like both Frances and Lea's version. They both have a unique way of portraying Eponine's character.

  • I see a bit of conversation over whose interpretation of Epiphone is best, Frances, or Lea Salonga.

I have heard Lea sing this with a great deal of feeling and intensity, so I know she does incorporate the sadness, the deep hope, the broken deam, the heart ache, the longing.

Nevertheless, I enjoy having both to listen to, the original London Epiphone - Frances, and the extremely gifted Lea Salonga and her wonderful voice and expressiveness.

  • Eponine is supposed to have that voice.

  • Iv loved the les mis music for ages and we went to see it on stage last october. this is deffo my favourite song.

  • @1FleshAbiding Like this Lay Miss-err-ob

  • i went to go and see this play last week with my class and thought it was amazing but this is my fav song out of the whole play =]

  • im singing this for my high school talent show and its going to be AMAZING!! =)

  • what part will you sing?

    break a leg!

  • @amourlove33 the second prt!

  • the second part is the best! wish me luck!

  • My gf sang this and now i cant stop listening to it :) <3

  • no other version comes close

  • this is so amazinngg !

my cousin is in the stage show in London :]

    <3

    xxxx

  • It would be perfect if we just heard it as one song, but the character knows and has grown up with Cosette and apprently was not nice to herr in the book although I only saw the musical, and Marius DOES know who she is and is her friends, at least in the musical and there should be more frustration in the emotion or anger, not just sweet innocence in grief and yearning like she does it. That's my opinion anyway.

  • Marius is actually quite mean to her in the book.

  • interesting. I dont know how I would play this in a musical then if I were her, but in the musical itself she is friends with him so I still hold my opinion, but yes I would definitely like to read the books someday.

  • Lea has an amazing voice, but to me she sounds too "Disney" for the role of Eponine. It's too clean and bright. Technically beautiful, but it doesn't have that touch of misery and hardship that is integral to Les Mis.

I guess that everyone has a version that resonates for them. I think this version is amazing.

  • Too Disney! Perfectly put. Technically beautiful isn't necessarily better, especially in a musical like this. Frances was the original choice for the TAC... I would have loved to see her on stage.

  • this version is better than Lea

  • this version seems innocent, weak and helpless...doesnt that echo eponine's personality?the person who sings this is pretty good too

lea's version is quite good too, she very much projects her voice. it sounds very powerful and strong, and is even more talented than this person's voice(i forgot her name). however i feel it doesnt not reflect the role of eponine correctly

  • Eponine is anything but innocent, weak, and helpless. I do love myself some Frances, but she is a very weak Eponine.

The thing about Ponine is that she's a bad girl, but Marius brings out a little bit of the little woman she is.

  • What does she say after "No where to go, no one to turn to"?

    I can't make it out

  • @solshine26 "I did not want your money sir, I came out here 'cuz I was told to"

  • it's "i did not want your money sir, i came out her 'cause i was told to"

  • @sevenseconds7777777 why does she say I DID NOT WANT YOUR MONEY SIR.......ive never seen this musical but i have always loved this song so much

  • Well, this is an old version of the lyrics- if you go to see the show now, or listen to later recordings, Eponine sings something like "without a home, without a friend, without a face to say hello to"- but I'm guessing that in the old version of the show, a student or someone came and offered her money at this point, thinking she was begging- but it's not that important, as it was later taken out.

  • Marius offers her money to show her where Cosette lives, and she refuses it, showing him anyway.

This is why I love Eponine. Victor Hugo knew exactly what he wanted with her, and he sure as hell was going to get it.

  • that's not in On My Own i dont think- it happens a bit earlier

'Got you all excited now, but God knows what you see in her, ain't you all delighted now, no, I don't want your money sir."

  • Oh, yes, I was thinking on book terms.

Jean Valjean gives her money right after she delivers the letter in the book, and she doesn't refuse it. But she's not talking to her directly then. She's reflecting.

  • @sevenseconds7777777 It wasn't money from a astudent or anything, it was money from Jean Valjean. Marius had had her send a message to him about Cosette and, of course, Eponine did it because she can't say no to Marius. VaLjean had offered her money for her serives but she refused because it was a favor to Marius.

Frances does a magnificent job of Eponine. She has a beautiful voice that has never been surpassed in any version of this musical that I have ever seen. I love it so much!

  • This is so refreshing compared to Lea Solonga's unemotional delivery

  • you guys are all addictted to glee..i mean its a good show and all but lea whatsherface kinda screams it and this is the original Eponine and my personal favorite.

  • Haha, failure. They're talking about a completely different Lea. Lea Michele is the girl from Glee who sang this. Lea Solonga is who they're talking about.

  • Yes, the person on the cover is Cosette as a child. And personally, I prefer Lea as Eponine.

  • Lea Solonga IS Eponine (2x), in eveyway you cant say that, she is a true picture of the charater

  • If you're looking for a version with feeling, passion, and depth - listen to Frances Ruffelle's version.

If you're looking for a version that has a belting, powerful voice, but not as much feeling - listen to Lea Solonga's.

    That's the bottom line :)

  • @4813 Machimachi---I was looking for a version with feeling, passion, and depth as well as one that has belting, powerful voice, something that stirs my sou and I found it in Lea Solonga's version.

  • Powerful :O

  • Best version of this song hands down. No one else can compare!

  • Lea Solanga IS Eponine.....why is there even a discussion? Lea is the greatest singer of our time

  • @jatchwy no, Frances is! She IS the original so that's where the argument is...

  • i love this song! i want to see the musical but ya know, cant rlly at least. anyways, whos the person on the cover??? like is she a character? im not sure, new to this musical I WILL GOOGLE IT!

  • The person on the cover is Cosette (I think so anyway) ;p

I want to see the musical too, ya know!! TAKE ME -wails-

  • WILLL DOO! hahahaha!

  • I love Frances Ruffelle's softer voice (though none less intense), I think she makes a perfect Eponine =)

  • The singer is good but Lea Salonga is much better though...

  • Lea is still my fav.. there's just something about that voice that touches my soul..

  • Could you share "One Day More" of this Album? Thanks first.

  • honestly, no matter how good Lea is, she just doesn't fit Eponine's character. voices must also match the character's demeanor that they portray. it would just don't make any sense if a simple and lonely character like Eponine would display a strong-willed personality. the actresses must give life to the character, not merely do the character.

  • my fav version=] her voice is so young. i dont know much about the singer but i love how her voice makes her sound as if she is in her young 20's even 15 !! =<33

  • Frances Ruffelle may not have the best voice in the world but, she has a unique talent of puting so much emotion into every song she sings. To me that is more important. She is truly wonderful.

  • My favorite version! With a single phrase or cry- she is both captivating and haunting while paradoxically (& delusionally) optomistic for her future with Marius. As for the gritty, unusual tone of her voice-- that's required. Éponine isn't the conventional beauty w/ a sweet voice (like a Lea Solonga). Ruffelle made Éponine a real, flesh & blood human being. Too bad she was never able to acieve real fame w/ another show/character- nethin after Les Mis would be a come down I guess!

  • Like sometimes I feel that in musicals, the lyrics are soo perfectly attuned to emotions and what the play is about that these song writers must have feltsuch pain, or joy, or sorrow in their lives. Theirs just soo perfect.

  • this is not Lea Salonga

  • @sweetvoice92 , it's not her, it's the original BETTER version.

  • Comment removed

  • it's so emotionally.

i love love love this song!!!!!!!!

  • Lea Salonga is my favorite Eponine..
