I really like how at 1:54 Dave hits the china splash, mutes it, and then goes back to the high hat in less than a second, all with one hand. Matt Cameron is great, but Dave brought more to the band. His drumming was key to Vs. and Vitalogy, not to mention he is really fun to watch play. It's a real shame he and PJ couldn't get past their differences.
This is a video of the rehearsal. The performance of 'Daughter' later that night for the show was on a coupletely different awesome level. They cut the American Pie part, and went into Hey Hey My My. Eight days previous, Cobain had killed himself, and had quoted 'Hey Hey' in his suicide letter. At the end of that performance, Vedder opened his shirt to display the letter K for Kurt. Also, the lead guitar part is better during the show performance. To bad it's not available on YouTube.
it is true that it's better to fade out than burn away at least for the famous you can be just average and when you die suddenly everyone cares about you and finds you so more appealing it's sad but true
@randellanddante no no i like even love him but n soundgarden or temple of the dog. But he isnt belong to pj i think. And somebody said before , 'matt cant do anything out of soundgarden but nobody can be better than matt n soundgarden. absolutely true i think
Its just completely evident how much Dave Abbruzzese's drumming had on the band. It MADE Pearl Jam the great band that they once were. Now they just sound like the Rolling stones and they're boring old c*nts just like them. Getting rid of Dave, whilst on a personal level may have harmonnised the band, but musically, it was detrimental IMO. Never been the same since.
@Darthstew42 Thats the beauty of opinion mate; mine differs greatly from yours and I feel they have been lacking since firing Dave. Others like the band after Dave was fired. Each to their own but I stand by my opinion. Lets face it - Dave era was PJ's "peak" years. Persoanally I don't listen to anything after Vitalogy (as recogoction to Dave A and that i beleive their music has never been as good since) and it just so happens this song was on VS so its got Dave A all over it. Peace
there is more than one camera normally this was just a rehearsal and they didnt cut or edit anything together. were lucky we got to see even this. thank you
it's nice to see jeff with a hand cramp because i get them when i play guitar and i used to attribute it to the fact that i might be a pussy. looks like even the pros get them WOOOOT!
Ya always love the improvs eddie bee doing I remember that first time too it came on and just like wow they just hit me hella deep i be just so tuned in
These bands had a lot of influence on each other as well as the rest of the grunge world. I still love Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains , and Soundgarden the most of all. They are artists not like the puppets on MTV today.
I remember watching this live and how in awe we were at the eery ending of the song. Pearl jam has always been known to improv but you've gotta understand that it was shortly after cobains suicide and was an extremely touching and moving experience by Eddie. This was pearl jams best era in my opinion, ten was great and all but vitalogy and versus were just special albums. I still like their music today and them today however, it's just at that time there was so much emotion and turmoil going on.
@randellanddante I would LOVE to watch it as soon as possible. However, I am very very busy for the foreseeable future, and it will be quite some time before I will have the opportunity to do so. So, would u please be so kind as to give me a short explanation Either that, or do u happen to know of a clip on YT that includes the part u r referring to, along with the approximate time that it takes place in the video? Any help is greatly appreciated. In the mean time, my curiosity is 'killing' me.
@3TNT3 Mike in his own words essentially 'blacked out' during this performance. He said in the film the doesn't remembering playing Daughter on SNL in 1994.
@asavietto Oh, okay, thank you--I appreciate it. : ) Funny stuff. Yeah, I guess it is understandable to get a little overwhelmed when you skyrocket to fame and the 'BIG' stage.
@badboybob1074 - your completely out of your mind … These songs were recorded with Dave Abbruzzese on drums and they won't ever sound the same with Matt Cameron playing them (Matt is an excellent drummer but they're not his Drum parts) Dave's style is phenomenal - he keeps time with just cymbal shots ie: Rearviewmirror ! Just Saying
@Danoli77 I am with you. Although I like the idea of Matt Cameron being in the band, and I have nothing but respect for his work with Soundgarden, I really dug Dave's drum parts on the early stuff. I don't know alot about drums, but yeah they were cymbal-heavy, and his style really stands out on these classics.
3:56 Look at the left hand fingers on the guitar player! At first i thought it was a one of those circular loading/buffering symbols, but nope, hes just tearing it up(all while standing so nonchalantly).
the fact that the Eddie sings "Drove my Shevey to the levy but the Levy was dry singin" ....and doesn't finish his sentence and also sings "Hey, hey...my...my..." and also doesn't finish his sentence is a testament to who he knew Pearl Jam would become. Genius.
the "hey hey, my my" in the end is a tribute to Kurt Cobain as this is from 8 days after his death and in his suicide letter there's a sentence that makes reference to neil young's song "hey hey, my my" as well ("it's better to burn out than to fade away").

I hear that eddi pay tribute in this song to kurt, singing my my hey hey but I think is in the original broadcast or something anyone knows if that’s truth?
@GeorgSimmel88 Yeah, he sings a little bit of hey hey my my at the end referencing Kurt's comment in the suicide note. The comment "its better to burn out than fade away." Also, at the end of the show, Vedder opens his jacket and has the letter K on his shirt (a reference to Kurt being in his heart).
@drlepper72 There's no one named Matt in this video even. What are you talking about??? Pearl Jams current DRUMMER is named Matt, but obviously the drummer doesn't shred the solo, and this video is before he was in the band anyways.
@scantpie seeing as it was a rehearsal, it seems like they only used one, maybe 2, camera guys, when snl is live, they use a few. that being said, I've never seen the actual tv performance, but I'm sure they got his solo.
Neil Young's "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," includes the "it's better to burn out than to fade away" reference in Kurt's suicide note. I think that Eddie stay in one spot because this is Eddie’s Salute To Kurt Cobain
They weren't fighting so much at this point. This performance was 9 days after Kurt Cobain died, and they were all shaken up. It is the reason why they tag "Hey Hey My My (rock and roll will never die) and it is also why Eddie doesn't sing the lyrics "this will be the day that I die" at the end. It was a pretty intense time for them.
Like it Eddie or not, D.A has been by far the best drummer Pearl Jam have ever had! His drumming was the correct sound for PJ! Matt Cameron is a great drummer, but his drumming wasn't the right for Pearl Jam! The feeling D.A brought to the beats were the proper ones!
@petefader it looks like a hamer. it probably has a peizo which is basically an acoustic pickup that makes your guitar sound like an acoustic and throughout the song he switched between his piezo and his other electric pickup
@shanehf2006 I started playing the drums a few years before this was filmed. I can see why you could be into Dave Abruzzz whatever's playing.. but dont you think its all a bit jazzy? lots of little unnesessary faffing? To me he plays for himself and not the song. I been playing a long time and its kind of easyer to play all that fancy doodling over the top of a song than feel the song and lock into the whole piece.
@simontheseagul Absolutely not. He co wrote the sone musically and his groves fit it the best. Otherwise it sounds too plain and dull. Most drummer who listen to pearl jam believe he was the best drummer by far. Matt Cameron is sensational, maybe even a techinically better drummer than Abbruzzese, but Dave's groves fit the band better. Losing Dave was their undoing becuase after him, they went down hill, their best years and performances were with Dave hands down.
@BluesTheDark ya, i'm 31 myself..... but I stopped wearing flannel and combat boots back in 97'.... and that was oddly about the same time I started scoring some hot ass! LOL!!!!!

@drlepper72 There's no one named Matt in this video even. What are you talking about??? Pearl Jams current DRUMMER is named Matt, but obviously the drummer doesn't shred the solo, and this video is before he was in the band anyways.

Ha poor Mike, he plays his solo and the camera focuses on Stone instead.
scantpie 1 year ago
@scantpie seeing as it was a rehearsal, it seems like they only used one, maybe 2, camera guys, when snl is live, they use a few. that being said, I've never seen the actual tv performance, but I'm sure they got his solo.

I love the bass player around 1:56 shaking the cramp out his hand. I have to do the same thing playing the keys, but I'm an old guy!

Neil Young's "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," includes the "it's better to burn out than to fade away" reference in Kurt's suicide note. I think that Eddie stay in one spot because this is Eddie’s Salute To Kurt Cobain
BethLoveful 1 year ago 2
They weren't fighting so much at this point. This performance was 9 days after Kurt Cobain died, and they were all shaken up. It is the reason why they tag "Hey Hey My My (rock and roll will never die) and it is also why Eddie doesn't sing the lyrics "this will be the day that I die" at the end. It was a pretty intense time for them.

I have been a huge PJ fan from the begining, but i have to agree with the opinion that they made a mistake in firing DA.

The band was fighting so much here... Then they wrongly fired Dave :(

What guitar is Stone using..electric but sounds very accustic..anyone know?
petefader 1 year ago
@petefader it looks like a hamer. it probably has a peizo which is basically an acoustic pickup that makes your guitar sound like an acoustic and throughout the song he switched between his piezo and his other electric pickup

@petefader its done with the pedal he is using

@shanehf2006 I started playing the drums a few years before this was filmed. I can see why you could be into Dave Abruzzz whatever's playing.. but dont you think its all a bit jazzy? lots of little unnesessary faffing? To me he plays for himself and not the song. I been playing a long time and its kind of easyer to play all that fancy doodling over the top of a song than feel the song and lock into the whole piece.
simontheseagul 7 months ago
@simontheseagul Absolutely not. He co wrote the sone musically and his groves fit it the best. Otherwise it sounds too plain and dull. Most drummer who listen to pearl jam believe he was the best drummer by far. Matt Cameron is sensational, maybe even a techinically better drummer than Abbruzzese, but Dave's groves fit the band better. Losing Dave was their undoing becuase after him, they went down hill, their best years and performances were with Dave hands down.
