  • FUCKING HELL

    FUCK

    OH FUCK

    OH MY FUCK

  • This is killin!

  • Dealing with that much raw expressive drive and capability must have been really rough in the early 90s - I can see how someone that deep can have a hard time dealing with all the madness and need method to sign out and maybe dig a little deeper into themselves. Glad he made it out the dragon chase alive.

  • Brad Mehldau is the Art Tatum of the 21st century

  • brad will be an alltime Great

  • Wonderful ! unfortunately, when Brad came back to play with Joshua (Timeless Tales), it was less good.. Here it's magic !

  • This drives crazy!

  • wow.

  • We need more heart players like this. Virtuosos in the true sence...

  • Daauyym!

  • this is proof that mehldau is the fucking man. No bullshit here, just the work of a genius.

  • misleading title

  • @paisteguy799 I agree, but the unappreciation eats at me not because other artist's abilities are obsolete in comparison, but because so many who can understand this music will listen to "trad" jazz and then discount this as true to the genre... fear of change, lack of a q-tip, synapses not firing as quickly... I dunno why, but this is tops in terms of human ability and creativity, and anyone who thinks otherwise is more than welcome to duel with either of these musicians and prove me wrong.

  • its sad to think that such a little percent of the world understands and appreciates the greatest, most expressive form of music in the world, these men are the very definition of musicians, speaking the language fucking brilliant

  • @paisteguy799 There are nearly 1000's upon 1000's expressive, beautiful forms of music. I think I get your point though.... are you talking about radio music that people listen to just because it's on the radio. Now THAT is sad.

  • @tpstrat14 yea i mean i like other forms of music as much as the next person, infact, i listen to bands like tool and porcupine tree, as much as i listen to jazz but i feel that this form of jazz is soo ridiculously underrated, simply because the skill and talent that goes into this level of music is sooo fuckin beyond artists like lil wayne, kanye west, lady gaga, etc...

  • what song is this?

  • Comment removed

  • @imakery

    Echoes

  • what tune is this?

  • This is real jazz! One of my favs and out of this world musicality!

  • THIS IS JAZZ

  • This is sick, Blade and McBride work so well together. I saw McBride, Blade, and Chick Corea at a small workshop with only like 10 other people, it was amazing how cohesive the three of them were.

  • 7 people don't have ears.

  • God Brad Mehldau is good. So is Brian Blade.

  • One of the best quartets ever.

  • and just to think that Joshua was a med student before he stabbed the jazz world with niceness...

  • @cbmuzik He was actually a social studies major, graduated from Harvard.

  • @Parvenu333

    I stand corrected. =]

  • @cbmuzik He graduated summa cum laude too... amazing that he was able to do that as well as practice sax every day, and I know he must have because it's impossible to play at his level without practicing constantly.

  • @Parvenu333

true. or he is a prodigy in that sense...

  • @cbmuzik Prodigies are a bit of a myth... the model works at young age, but at a certain point if you don't practice there's nothing you can learn from yourself. Buddy Rich was a "prodigy" but he never was a truly great player in the sense that Brian Blade, for example, is. Stevie Wonder was a prodigy, but he practiced and practiced and he's still a great player. To paraphrase Miles, Joshua Redman "didn't wake up one day with the blues."

  • @Parvenu333

I was just using that term lightly. I play keyboards and piano so I already know what you're saying. =]

  • @cbmuzik Aye, either way, the guy can play

  • That smoke rules the world

  • I don't thin Brad is on heroin at all. He just looks real focused and is concentrating. He's definitely not strung out.

  • @megustatacosmucho Are you a doctor or an addictions specialist or something? I haven't tried the stuff but I don't think it would be all that possible to play what he's playing while on heroin. Don't glamorize drug addiction. It killed Bird and Brad was fortunate to tackle his. It has nothing to do with artistic genius.

  • @megustatacosmucho thats not pain hes just realy diggin whats happening

  • What is this song, does anybody know?

  • @taconip i believe it's a redman tune called "echoes"

  • absolutely fabulous playing by all! you can really hear Herbie Hancock's influence from Miles' Plug Nickel album

  • anyone got the redman solo?

  • Christian Mcbride + Blade= amazing!

  • Brian Blade for president

  • 6:23-6:35 no way.....unbelieveable

  • how do u play drums with ur eyes closed

  • @Beijejr they just eventually become extensions of you

  • @Beijejr pretty freakin east at least easier than piano

  • wowzers

  • unreal. i would marry brian blade's right hand.

  • @benpaulding hahahaha

  • He makes it look so easy.

  • does anyone know what song this is?

  • Comment removed

  • @ChrisJefferiesMusic the song is called Echoes from Joshua's first album called Joshua Redman.

  • Comment removed

  • asi se toca bateria cabron

  • The bass player is in the zone, man!

  • I'm sorry I just can't believe this mehldau solo the man is literally king of the piano!

  • I FREAKIN LOVE BRAD'S KILLER SOLO IN THIS ONE! It's a shame he was probly high, but then you've got the beasty brian Blade to top things off. MY GOD I'm not sure if it gets any better.

  • @Shahede7 why do you assume he was high?

  • @robertolobo because the entire reason he's mo lomger with Joshua Redman is because he was on heroin. Idk if he was high on this video, but he was an addict.

  • @Shahede7 How do you know that?

  • Wow, just amazing. Rhythm is locked down so tight.

  • holy shit...

  • brian blade one of the most versatile and elegant drummers in jazz. love his good taste and dynamics as well as his language on drums.

one can see mehldaus beginnings afterwards established in his own trio

  • damn

  • i cant watch this enough

  • Insane! Im late for work but i cant stop listening ti this..

  • 145,000 of the 146,849 views were probably done by me... can't get enough of this.

  • brian blade=class one of my role models as im new to this language called jazz drumming hardest thing in my life right now haha.

  • Back to the nineties hehe! I was at this very concert in Vienne, France, 1994. They had opened for Joe Henderson. Great great memories!

  • holllllly shit

  • I like the textures in the melodies during this performance. Improvisation is the essence of most jazz music.

  • are u kidding me brad. thats not even humanly possible

  • mcbride looks so relaxed at this tempo! geezus!

  • @theartofhereandnow well, you HAVE TO be relaxed at this tempo or you burn yourself.

  • mcbride looks so relaxed walking lines at that tempo!! geezus!

  • Its amazing brad's solo. Somehow the tune has a melancholy tone or sinisterness about it but I mean, the tempo is very fast. Yet despite this fast tempo, brad and the others can maintain that melancholy tone while developing the solo. Its like a story being told, but in a VERY high level musical performance. Its videos like this toat make me think that jazz is some of the hardest if not the hardest music to play WELL (like this)!

BTW What is the name of this tune? I MUST know!

  • joshua is always like that when there is a solo, he never shuts himself out, always open to the ideas being thrown around, it's like he's in the audience!

these guys are one of the best groups in the last few decades, in my opinion

  • Blade is swingin hard!!!! Love it!!!

  • its obviously improvised, you think anyone could memoize that and than recreate it

  • @shenmue4life wow... this statement of yours is kinda deep. In one way, improvised musics like jazz aren't as complicated as say a Beethoven symphony (basically, written art music in general). This isn't surprising seeing as how the music is being created on the spot. But as you say on the other hand, this performance of Echoes can NEVER be recreated again (even if you transcribed every note and nuance {or even if the same group did this}, it just would not be the same). That is beautiful.

  • brads such a fuckin pimp after his solo he whips out a cigarette

  • well he was high as a kite...

  • yeah he's like a fuckin zen master!!! ohmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • I love how into Blade's solo Joshua Redman is. True respect, true musicianship.

  • One of the all time working bands in jazz history!!! Yeah I said it...

  • Mehldau solo / Blade solo -> five hundred stars

  • thousand********

  • shades of elvin i love it

  • wow. hey brian you´re fucking awesome

  • are this guys improvising, or there is a namer for this tune?

  • @ravilafrias The name of the tune is "Echoes", from Joshua Redman's first album. These guys are all improvising off of the form of the tune.

  • Hey Rudreax, thanks a lot for the answer, and have yourself a merry little christmas! =)

  • damn. no one even comes close to blade on the drums

  • sooooo true

  • anyone know the tune?

  • Echoes- Joshua Redman

  • LMAO!!!!!! 4:52 Brad u legend!!!

  • HAHA 4:17 Brad's just like "'Scuse me"

  • I saw him few days ago...his playing has changed so much!

  • how so?

  • woooaaaaaahhhhh

  • brad is the man!

  • is 2:54 really happening?

  • yes.. but its unbelievable peace

  • it's happening alright! :-)

  • i don't normally post...but feel compelled--->Mehldau was (and is) a genius...an actual one. Not in the loose use of the word in today's circles...seriously heavy.

  • YES!!!!!

  • mama

  • when was this?

  • Around ´94 I think...that make Brad 24 years old on this clipp...thats kinda frightening...best, Sandemose

  • I see your name on like every video I watch...scarily similar taste.... :)

  • @DrummerInExile i liked the songs you put up of joshua aswell, were all into the same stuff\!

  • Blade's*

  • Joshua Redman looks like such a cool guy, really getting into Brian's solo. Brian Bades is defintely my favourite jazz drummer!

  • does anyone know the name of this tune?

  • feel like my balls are gona drop off anytime soon.

  • AHHHHHHHHH ._. THE INTENSITY

  • Mehldau can't stand your face :-)

  • brian is a genius.

  • for some reason in this video when I look at brad mehldau he looks like john cho haha

  • lol

  • Will someone please tell me how someone that young (Mehldau) can get that good? I could be on this planet for 300 years and practice 8 hours a day and never get that freaking great. Please explain.

  • some people just have that "thing." i have met people with this 'thing" and i have met people without anything resembling this "thing." thus is talent.

  • That "thing" is an awareness and the ability to express that awareness. It's an awareness of the environment, a sense of the atmosphere or mood. Every moment in life is like a chess position, and talent is measured by how far one can see into that moment. But that "thing" is the same in everything; it's just the kind of awareness and expression that change. Some things are just called for in a given moment; and the people who see it, and the people who then do it, are the people who we remember.

  • ...yeah man! thank you. if i understood you correctly, talent = waking up. waking up = something we can change and consciously effect. that's a very powerful bit of knowledge that demystifies a whole heap of educational bullsh*t and gives alot of hope and direction to those that want it.

  • fewer close-ups, please, mr. cameramen

  • This band needs to get back together.

  • Does anyone know the name of this track or concert?

  • I think you guys are complicating, and over analyzing things. I like to just enjoy the creativity and improvisation. You know, kinda' just feel the flow, and get into the music!

  • that stick control is insane

  • Does anyone know the name of this?

  • That was some soulful drumming.

  • !!!!

  • HAHA 6:24 - 6:49. Great drummer!

  • Seriously...blows my mind every time how he implies that 3 chord motif and then mimics the beginning of Mehldau's solo lines in the space between the "chords". Just incredibly thoughtful, brilliant approach.

  • holy action on christians bass

  • what wonderful rythmic placing of right hand between 2:07 and 2:11 !

  • Wooooow! Brad plays wonderful! It's great!

  • burning is right...this tune COOKS

  • burning

  • can anyone write out the changes?

  • Comment removed

  • great video!!!!!!

  • I love Brad's kaftan :3

  • Is this a modal tune of some sort, i'm havin a real hard time hearing out changes.

  • well it is difficult but not modal. modal means you stay on one chord and the players play over that chord using modes like ionian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian and aeolian. there are very little changes in modal jazz.

there is also the second set of heptatonic modes including the melodic minor, melodic major and the lydian minor 7th.

    most of this is improvisation.

  • No it doesn't. You can have modal music with lots of changes.

  • the whole point of modal jazz was to get away from the standard chord change formula. you might have a "change," but it usually stays within the 7 notes of the scale. putting in a bunch of the standard jazz changes defeats the entire purpose of modal music and prevents the soloist from having the ability to play freely.

  • Then you should have said that. The sound can change quite a bit and still technically be modal.

  • well, "changes" in jazz usually refers to chromatic changes as opposed to diatonic changes, so that is what i though you meant when you said it, and is why i replied as i did.

  • I have to disagree with the critiques of Brian's solo. He is slamming in the beginning - very on top but also playing the melody of the song - which had a push to it so IMO it makes sense that he pushes as well. Overall I enjoyed his entire solo - the end is more rudimental and less melodic IMO and definitely more contained. Great stuff.

  • Check out the big brain on Brad!

  • hahaha, you one smart motherfucker, thats right!

  • The most hilarious part of this video is Brad having a cigarette at 4:51.

  • and then josh tells him to put it out, no?

  • Oh yeah!, i agree, the cigarette that Brad his having it´s like a bonus or a break after all the incredible piano performance he did in this show.

  • oh yeah i remember the first time i saw that out of nowhere i freaked out!! so funny... and kinda creepy . haha

  • is he playing singles or a roll from 7:13 on??

  • feels like it's halfway in between a buzz and singles/doubles, particularly in the very beginning of that section where he's only playing the snare.

  • @Bosphorus92 im pretty sure those are singles

  • Comment removed

  • I must be... :-)

I might also simply be completely objective about Brian Blade...

He's a genius, an absolute genius, but from 4:45 to 6:15, although he still pulls some brilliant motions, he starts up too fast...

Then again, I might be completely wrong, which would definetely make me... an idiot...

    :-)

  • read your own comment, it's not objective. i don't know what you're talking about honestly

  • well... listen and look at Blade, look at him thinking his solo, playing from some place of his ego mind...

Until he realizes, smiles, settles down, and lets the flow back in...

    look... and see...

    :-)

  • ya sorry dude.. i don't know what your talking about. haha.

  • I guess I'm just being too much of an iconoclast...

    :-)

  • I agree, you know what your talking about..

  • Thanks for an insightful analysis, regardless of what others have responded with. I'm not necessarily convinced (I haven't tried to count it yet haha), but I appreciate the thought that Brian Blade might ACTUALLY be human. ;-)

Even with an alleged slip-up, he uses it so beautifully to shape the structure of his solo. That 'humble silencing' is arguably the best part of his solo! Taste, not just brute force.

Either way, great vid, great players, great solo. Thanks for your post.

  • Thanks ;-)

  • I'm gonna go practice.
