Dealing with that much raw expressive drive and capability must have been really rough in the early 90s - I can see how someone that deep can have a hard time dealing with all the madness and need method to sign out and maybe dig a little deeper into themselves. Glad he made it out the dragon chase alive.
@paisteguy799 I agree, but the unappreciation eats at me not because other artist's abilities are obsolete in comparison, but because so many who can understand this music will listen to "trad" jazz and then discount this as true to the genre... fear of change, lack of a q-tip, synapses not firing as quickly... I dunno why, but this is tops in terms of human ability and creativity, and anyone who thinks otherwise is more than welcome to duel with either of these musicians and prove me wrong.
its sad to think that such a little percent of the world understands and appreciates the greatest, most expressive form of music in the world, these men are the very definition of musicians, speaking the language fucking brilliant
@paisteguy799 There are nearly 1000's upon 1000's expressive, beautiful forms of music. I think I get your point though.... are you talking about radio music that people listen to just because it's on the radio. Now THAT is sad.
@tpstrat14 yea i mean i like other forms of music as much as the next person, infact, i listen to bands like tool and porcupine tree, as much as i listen to jazz but i feel that this form of jazz is soo ridiculously underrated, simply because the skill and talent that goes into this level of music is sooo fuckin beyond artists like lil wayne, kanye west, lady gaga, etc...
This is sick, Blade and McBride work so well together. I saw McBride, Blade, and Chick Corea at a small workshop with only like 10 other people, it was amazing how cohesive the three of them were.
@cbmuzik He graduated summa cum laude too... amazing that he was able to do that as well as practice sax every day, and I know he must have because it's impossible to play at his level without practicing constantly.
@cbmuzik Prodigies are a bit of a myth... the model works at young age, but at a certain point if you don't practice there's nothing you can learn from yourself. Buddy Rich was a "prodigy" but he never was a truly great player in the sense that Brian Blade, for example, is. Stevie Wonder was a prodigy, but he practiced and practiced and he's still a great player. To paraphrase Miles, Joshua Redman "didn't wake up one day with the blues."
@megustatacosmucho Are you a doctor or an addictions specialist or something? I haven't tried the stuff but I don't think it would be all that possible to play what he's playing while on heroin. Don't glamorize drug addiction. It killed Bird and Brad was fortunate to tackle his. It has nothing to do with artistic genius.
I FREAKIN LOVE BRAD'S KILLER SOLO IN THIS ONE! It's a shame he was probly high, but then you've got the beasty brian Blade to top things off. MY GOD I'm not sure if it gets any better.
@robertolobo because the entire reason he's mo lomger with Joshua Redman is because he was on heroin. Idk if he was high on this video, but he was an addict.
Its amazing brad's solo. Somehow the tune has a melancholy tone or sinisterness about it but I mean, the tempo is very fast. Yet despite this fast tempo, brad and the others can maintain that melancholy tone while developing the solo. Its like a story being told, but in a VERY high level musical performance. Its videos like this toat make me think that jazz is some of the hardest if not the hardest music to play WELL (like this)!
joshua is always like that when there is a solo, he never shuts himself out, always open to the ideas being thrown around, it's like he's in the audience!
these guys are one of the best groups in the last few decades, in my opinion
@shenmue4life wow... this statement of yours is kinda deep. In one way, improvised musics like jazz aren't as complicated as say a Beethoven symphony (basically, written art music in general). This isn't surprising seeing as how the music is being created on the spot. But as you say on the other hand, this performance of Echoes can NEVER be recreated again (even if you transcribed every note and nuance {or even if the same group did this}, it just would not be the same). That is beautiful.
i don't normally post...but feel compelled--->Mehldau was (and is) a genius...an actual one. Not in the loose use of the word in today's circles...seriously heavy.
Will someone please tell me how someone that young (Mehldau) can get that good? I could be on this planet for 300 years and practice 8 hours a day and never get that freaking great. Please explain.
some people just have that "thing." i have met people with this 'thing" and i have met people without anything resembling this "thing." thus is talent.
That "thing" is an awareness and the ability to express that awareness. It's an awareness of the environment, a sense of the atmosphere or mood. Every moment in life is like a chess position, and talent is measured by how far one can see into that moment. But that "thing" is the same in everything; it's just the kind of awareness and expression that change. Some things are just called for in a given moment; and the people who see it, and the people who then do it, are the people who we remember.
...yeah man! thank you. if i understood you correctly, talent = waking up. waking up = something we can change and consciously effect. that's a very powerful bit of knowledge that demystifies a whole heap of educational bullsh*t and gives alot of hope and direction to those that want it.
I think you guys are complicating, and over analyzing things. I like to just enjoy the creativity and improvisation. You know, kinda' just feel the flow, and get into the music!
Seriously...blows my mind every time how he implies that 3 chord motif and then mimics the beginning of Mehldau's solo lines in the space between the "chords". Just incredibly thoughtful, brilliant approach.
well it is difficult but not modal. modal means you stay on one chord and the players play over that chord using modes like ionian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian and aeolian. there are very little changes in modal jazz.
there is also the second set of heptatonic modes including the melodic minor, melodic major and the lydian minor 7th.
the whole point of modal jazz was to get away from the standard chord change formula. you might have a "change," but it usually stays within the 7 notes of the scale. putting in a bunch of the standard jazz changes defeats the entire purpose of modal music and prevents the soloist from having the ability to play freely.
well, "changes" in jazz usually refers to chromatic changes as opposed to diatonic changes, so that is what i though you meant when you said it, and is why i replied as i did.
I have to disagree with the critiques of Brian's solo. He is slamming in the beginning - very on top but also playing the melody of the song - which had a push to it so IMO it makes sense that he pushes as well. Overall I enjoyed his entire solo - the end is more rudimental and less melodic IMO and definitely more contained. Great stuff.
Thanks for an insightful analysis, regardless of what others have responded with. I'm not necessarily convinced (I haven't tried to count it yet haha), but I appreciate the thought that Brian Blade might ACTUALLY be human. ;-)
Even with an alleged slip-up, he uses it so beautifully to shape the structure of his solo. That 'humble silencing' is arguably the best part of his solo! Taste, not just brute force.
Either way, great vid, great players, great solo. Thanks for your post.

I might also simply be completely objective about Brian Blade...
He's a genius, an absolute genius, but from 4:45 to 6:15, although he still pulls some brilliant motions, he starts up too fast...
Then again, I might be completely wrong, which would definetely make me... an idiot...

I would say there are 3 parts to Blade's solo:
The one from 4:45 to 6:15 where he starts, pushes and hits, speeds up, "tries" too hard, until he realizes he lost it (see his smile at 6:00),
Then the one from 6:15 to 6:35, where he humbly silences himself, gets back together, waiting for the flow...
And the one from 6:35 to the end, where he just lets the magic out...
Incredible, true, beautiful dummer / man...
