This is such a satisfying moment, I can't believe it got cut out. Especially when in the theatrical cut, Guy just disappears. I wanted to see Balian beat Guy, especially after he spared his life due to his moral code.
This scene was cut out of the theatrical version and first release, along with over an hours worth of footage. Ridley Scott (Dir) has said for years that the release is a butchered version that cut the heart out of the film.
Do yourself a favor and get the Director's Cut. Awesome movie.
Yeah and so far it's been shit with political correctness gone mad for shit knows how many years. I might not even be able to carry my sword in public OR wear my tunic with the white cross on it becuase its deemed as racist..even though it's my job/livelyhood..so whats good about 2010?
No i'm not an American...its my job and a hobby point being i dont know why, it's just been said to me before some of the 'non christians' saw it as me forcing my religeon onto them where in fact i'm not very religious and its historical accuracy.
If you have a hand and a half sword like Balien or however then YES you can use two hands. I prefer to use two hands and i have a single handed crusader sword..a sheild is cumbersome..hampers your foot work..you draw the enemy in slice down diagonal over the hip to knee..most will be overconfident vs a reenactor with no sheild. Also, no pot helm, a nasal helm at best gives better vision. however i do like pot helms..miss my old got batterd to my head lol
Funny thing is that Balian just washes the blood off himself and then he fights Guy and gets all bloody again!
I don't know why this scene was taken out to begin with. In the original, Guy just disappears after being humiliated. I like this fight because Balian puts up with Guy and spares his life, it's satisfying to watch Balian give him what he deserves.
I still can't believe that's Marton Csokas! He was Orlando's elven brethren in LOTR!
Too bad you don't really fight that way with swords. Well, what do I know how they fought in the early 1100, but at least they didn't fight like that in the 1300s, according to the Tower Manual.
actually from my research the dual sword style is similar to this (maybe not as choreographic looking, but still). Anyway the choreographer is a guy who seems to know the styles of the times.
I don't remember too much. But was that manual meant for longswords? Not hand and a halfs like the ones here? I don't know but living in Japan I have a new found love for my cultures history.
I believe you are correct. I know Crusaders didn't hold 2 hands on the sword one reason is that they held shields and the other reason was that that their isen't enough room on the swords they use. I also believe they didn't left them so easy to kill with that sword in high stance.
geoffrey was the the brother of balian not his father,Balian wasnt a blacksmith she was a pulain, and Ibelin she was a great castle with 4 towers!.Tiberias is Raymond of tripoli III.the movie is a myth.
the executives at 20th Century Fox believed people would be less inclined to see a historical drama than a historical action so about 45 minutes to an hour of material was cut from the movie, this scene sadly was among them.
i said lol because my friend, onufripos ,you have written it wrong, its actually "we are all of us what we do" and by the way LOL ALL YOUR FAVOURITES ARE PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN!
Guy does not use the tactics Balian was taught from his father...Balian knows how to defend himself.Guy is a good swordsman..but u see at 1.15 his difference with Balian at sword.I may be wrong but that is my opinion:Balian even as a blacksmither is better at sword than Guy is.And we r all what we do mates.Remember that.
It wasn't Ridley's call to cut this among other scenes, the producers wanted an action movie set in historical times rather than a drama set in historical times...sad really, you can hear how pissed Orlando was about this scene being cut in the commentary.
Great scene! He´s a very good swordsmen altough he only got one lesson from his father:)
Kinda annoying tough, that Kingdom of heaven isn´t following the real events at all. I mean Balian of Ibelin had a brother that ruled with him in the county of Ibelin, he was definetley not a blacksmith in France and none of them had a father called Godfrey of Ibelin!
well if you watch, when his dad and his boys are schoolin' the fool, they establish that he'd already been formerly trained, and so basically his dad and the others are giving him brush ups and the high guard which (according to the film) was supposedly preferred in the middle east at that time. I'm a stickler for history too, but look how long the edited version of this film was, there would have been no way to get it all in. I'll give it a pass for maximum effort!
I watched the film again, and as much as this scene rocks, it's placement in the film is really odd. And Balian's line ("We are all what we do.") is borderline lame.
Did any of you pay attention to the movie? At the beginning of the film Balian already had combat experience; even his father comments that he fights well. Add to that all the battles he see throughout the film, and there's no denying he knows how to handle a sword.
By the time Balian's father had found him, he had already been to crusade and back again. He was seasoned..something they had left out in the theatrical version.

ps. what is the "Tower Manual"?
dracolot 3 years ago
The Tower Manual is a manual on fencing from the 1300's. Also known as the 1.33 and (may be misspelled) fechtbuch (it should mean fencing book.)
Check out a few clips if you get a chance. :)
