  • ahahaha number 2.. great job man!

  • Also, you mentioned that there were no extra challenges, but if you hold select on the title screen and press the bomb button followed by the shoot button 10 times, you'll go to screen with two difficulty options to choose from. Do the code again for a third difficulty, and again for a 4th, ridiculously hard one :).

  • I love your videos Chris, just posting to tell you some things about this game that you might find interesting if you didn't know them already. If you shoot the gels that change between all the numbers a lot, or else just let them reach the bottom of the screen, they transform into flashing gels. Grab one of those and it destroys all enemies on screen and when you die next, instead of starting at a checkpoint, you'll instantly respawn where you died! Very useful for that final stage

  • @alienjesus Yes, you basically need to catch those flashing crystals and use them as part of the strategy or else...good luck beating the game. It's the only way I have been able to do it

  • @spida1a Since it is not mentioned in the manual, I only briefly mention it in the review. Gotta' find that out ya'lls self. Ha ha! Thanks for watching. :)

  • Anyone else noticed that probably 85% of the gameplay mechanics from this game, Toho used for Super Aleste on the SNES?

  • @TheSluggaboy Ha! Hey, that's a great observation! Thanks for watching!

  • This and Soldier Blade are my two absolute fav shooters of all time

  • @m13579k Thanks for watching!

  • This was hands down my favorite game on the TurboGrafx. Just a fun shooter, that gets insanely difficult at the end.

  • @singleh27 It is totally awesome. Thanks for watching!

  • This is still one of my favorite shooters.

  • @elsquibbs Me too! Thank again!

  • this game is fun as hell

  • @Bloodbane2099 Well put! Totally! Thanks for watching!

  • Can we say system pack-in fiasco here? what reason could they possibly have had to include this one with the system besides trying to make an extra 50$? I mean geez, put a game most people will say "WOW! I have to play this!" & they will buy the system. Nintendo knew this as they included a mario game with almost every system back then. Sometimes im not surprised the system failed over here :P

Great review of a must play title if you consider yourself a serious gamer.

  • @Polywanacraka A completely agree. I mean...some people say this was their "flag ship game" and therefore it should be used to make-money (and not packed in). To me, that is backwards. You pack in "flag ship games" to SELL consoles. You know? I don't know...I guess I'm just crazy. :)

  • @spida1a Nah, youre completely sane. You give the gamer/buyer the feeling they have to buy YOUR console to play the specific game they want. Well that was back then so shows over :( Nowadays exclusive games are virtually nonexistant (not counting the Wii of course) as 99.97% of the games are cross-platforms. This unfortunately means that you pick a console based on hilarious choices like brand, looks & your neighbor :P

When consoles adopted C++ & scripts an angel died... Damn cookie cutters.

  • @Polywanacraka Lol... the language used has nothing to do with it, if anything games got better over time due to C++ and scripts.

Companies these days often make consoles that are not very different from each other (like the 360's cpu which is a copy of the Ps3 cell processor technology)

That is what promotes cross-platform games, but first party titles are still exclusive today and even back in the day EA for example would always release games cross-platform

  • @spida1a

But isn't there a bundle with Blazing Lasers as well?

(I would assume it took them a bit of time figuring it out...^^)

by the way I got GUNHED for the Famicom :D

  • Great game, unfortunate title. I don't know if I like this or Soldier Blade more, this has more of a techno/old school video game feel while SB has more of an anime feel. This game has better weapons.

  • @beyondthesevoices I agree. I have a soft spot for this one....but the later overhead shooters have become a favorite of mine also. Ha ha.

    Thanks for watching!

  • too much enemies on the screen,space,brains,living-floating-skull-robot-thing,voice when power-up...hm....its make me thinks about a game...what was its name?...oh yeah..! Gradius and Life force?

  • @TobiTheHedgehog Ha ha. Yeah really. Of course, they were kind enough to toss in some horizontal stages also. ha ha. :)

  • awesome game. did you ever try the cheat code and ramp it up to god-mode? if you do, do a lb. of coke cause you will need twitchy thumbs haha

  • @emperorzombie13 Ha ha. I never tried it, no. Thanks for watching!!

  • Look out AVGN!

  • @vato76 Thanks for watching!!!

  • Awesome review.

I'm currently going through all of your TG-16 video, reliving some great memories of my favorite childhood system.

Have you ever noticed the incredible similarities between this game and Space Megaforce/Super Aleste on the SNES--the weapons, voices, gel-ball things, even the sound effects of ships blowing up seem to have been directly taken from Blazing Lasers/Gunhead.

I guess Compile wanted to continue the franchise, even under a new name.

  • @Tonytonyaaa Thanks my friend for sharing that information! Take care!

  • @Tonytonyaaa If I understand it correctly, even though Toho released Space Megaforce, it was made by the same people that made Blazing Lazers. As much as I love Blazing Lazers, I think I like Space Megaforce a tad more.

  • @Tonytonyaaa If I understand it correctly, even though Toho released Space Megaforce, it was made by the same people that made Blazing Lazers. As much as I love Blazing Lazers, I think I like Space Megaforce a tad more.

  • @Tonytonyaaa

If I recall properly, I think Space Megaforce was made by the same people that made Blazing Lazers, although it was published by Toho. Personally I like Space Megaforce a tad more. That was a truly great game.

  • Wow, Chris! Another great review from the master of unbiased vg reviewing.

I too, am a big fan of Blazing Lazers. I remember getting to the final boss a few times, back in the day but, in order to beat it I had to totally change my power-up strategy to one I wasn't thrilled with at first yet, amazingly, it worked. Seems like I might have beat it once more shortly after that but, never again as I just don't have those same reflexes that I did as a young adult.

BL was a truly a grand shooter!

  • @Psycausis Thanks for the compliments, best wishes and commenting on the vids (I see you had a Turbo Views marathon lately, ha ha). Take care and hope you're doing well! :)

  • This was a great game....i consider it one of the better shooters made even in 128 bit era....that an super star soldier

  • @bacardipr05 Thanks for watching!

  • Yes I finally found a good deal for this on eBay, $10! Yay! This game looks awesome, great review!

  • @TheLoadingScreenz Awesome! I really hope you enjoy it!

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.

  • How do I get good at this sort? I have Super Star Soldier and Gradius, and I can't seem to go beyond the first few stages. How do I get the basic knack of dodging bullets or reading movements? Is there a recommended 'practice' shooter? I don't seem to have the learning curve.

  • Definitely one of the finest shooters on the system and that's saying a lot since the system was known for it's numerous quality shooters more so than anything else.

Can't wait to see your reviews of the other games in the series Chris.

  • @vio2112 Thanks a bunch!

  • This game was a brilliant introduction to the 16-Bit age, loved it!

  • @atolm1 Most definitely! Thanks for watching!

  • Somebody missed the like button. :(

  • @TheLoadingScreenz Ha ha. I guess I'm an "acquired taste." LOL :)

    Thanks for watching!!

  • I would love to play this but I feel a little nervous about tons of balls flying toward me

  • @NadrianATRS Ba da bum! :)

  • Outstanding review.

  • @gamecollect101 Thanks a lot gamecollect101. I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)

  • you don't need continues to beat the whole game. i've done it with out continuing

  • @dafon808 Nah, not really. For people who are pretty darn good at shooters (and those who can figure out the flashing-crystal rebirth trick), it's possible. Most people though.......really need them.

  • This was the second game I got for my beloved Turbo. I love everything about this game except the seventh stage. Because, I CAN'T GET PAST IT!!!! As always, great video, Chris.

  • @TheMathius78 Thanks my friend, as always! :)

  • The last level pisses me off....that's when i stop playing. any tips?

  • @123doomdoom Get good at collecting the "flashing crystals" and not dying much. That way you can use most of them in the final stage (they re-morph you where you "left off" instead of starting you at the beginning of the stage based on how many you collect).

  • @123doomdoom Nah, I say get good at hitting "Load State." ;)

  • @CyborgNinja7 Ha ha! Lame!!

  • @CyborgNinja7 I can't...because I am playing it on a duo. :(

  • In my opinion, the best shooter for Pc engine is Super Star soldier, followed by this, final soldier and soldier blade. I dunno why soldier blade is my least fav...But I don't like it as much as the others. I managed to finally beat super star soldier yesterday. For CD game, fav is always lords of thunder.

  • Best review of Blazing Lazers ever.

  • @narox Wow. Hey, thanks so much! It means a lot. :)

  • Hey Chris! I just wanted to say that i absolutely love your videos. I saw your DVD in one of PeteDorr's videos and decided to check you out and since then couldn't stop watching! I flew through every video on your site in a couple of nights and can't wait for more, thanks!

  • @Alfurodas Wow...hey, thanks a lot. You compliments mean a lot to me. I'm working on a couple now so....stay tuned! Thanks again for subscribing and watching!

  • I would argue this is a contender for the best shooter slot for the system. It's not a the hands-down winner, but I'd say it's a strong contender and a rival to any of the other hucard shmups.

  • @fruitbane You'll get no argument here. :)

  • I am trying to decide between this and Soldier Blade. Which is better and why? I've found that a lot of people love one and hate the other which makes it difficult to decide.

  • Hmm. I'm not a good one to ask. I love both of the games, to be honest.

I tend to shift a tad toward BL, but........not by much. I guess get both if ya' can (if you're buying them, SL tends to be a lot more price-wise though....You know?) :)

  • ahh, i loved this game. i always cued through the game music using the music debug code. Fun stuff!

never understood why a hot chick was out in space shooting at ya...but oh well.

  • Ha ha. Hot chicks are crafty! LOL! :)

    Thanks for watching.

  • I won $350 dollars playing this game as a kid. They had some promotional contents.

  • Wohoo! Awesome!! :)

  • I love your reviews! great! subbing..... now!

  • Hey, awesome. Thanks for much for subbing!! :)

  • I'm really into shmups now and this is definitley a great one from what I've seen at CGR and now here too! Awesome man!

  • Thanks a lot for watching! :)

  • Ahh, this reminds me of the old retroforceGO! episodes where Topher Cantler would randomly shout "Lazing Blazers" it was quite funny, see, because he switched the first letter of each word.

  • Ha ha! Nice!

    Thanks for watching!

  • Well that's convenient for me because that's the game I ended up buying! (Gate of Thunder) I really appreciate all the great reviews, they've helped A LOT!

  • Excellent my friend.

    Thanks for watching!

  • So what shooter WOULD you say is the best on the Turbo? I'm getting pretty into the Turbo for the first time thanks to the Wii's virtual console and I'm itching for a great shooter. There are quite a few to say the least! Great review btw.

  • I'm not 100% sure. But, I have some ideas (and after reliving them in the future, I hope to have a more definitive answer). Gate of Thunder would be one of them. :)

  • Awesome! Thanks for the nostalgia. This game was the primary reason why I bought a TG-16 over 20 years ago. To this day I still play and own this game.

  • Hey, thank you. I appreciate it!!

    :)

  • Thanks for the review!! I was sooo waiting for you to review this. One of the flagship games on Turbo. Despite the early release, I think it's the best of the Hudson Turbo game that followed including SSS, Final Soldier, and Soldier Blade. One of the best overhead shooters of the time.

  • Great stuff. Thanks for watching as always! :)

  • DOD! Youse almost bust remembering star soldier!? I fuckin laugh so hard I started puking! Anyway nice fuckin review keep up the great work yadig!?

  • LOL! Thanks for watching. I have to be honest.....I can't understand anything you just at the beginning there. LOL! :)

  • AWESOME video, you've made Gunhed look as good as it was the first time I ever played it! Nice editing, that potatoe peel boss near the start of the film was one of my favourites and I'd fortgotten about it until now. Superb.

  • Thanks a lot for the comment and for watching! :)

  • Holy fook! I had no idea it was based from gunhead!!? wow!

    Thanks again Chris!

  • You watch my vids two days after I post? I watch yours right away. That's it man......our friendship is over.

    Ha ha!!!

    Just playing. Talk soon!!

  • Seems like a lot like Arrow Flash to me.

  • Hmm. I never played AF. Didn't that come out by Sega?

  • Yeah, it was on the Mega Drive, or the Genesis as you Americans call it. The power up thing is quite similar. You have the numbers and the letters Numbers for main weapon and letters for bombs. You should check it out its fun, and have an interesting thing where you can change between a ship and a little astro guy/thing.

  • Hmm, interesting. Maybe they copied the style of Gunhed for it (since it apparently came out a year later)? Hee hee. :)

  • Maybe that's so. Its fun any how.

  • Awesome. I'll have to check it out! Thanks!!

  • oh ya alot of people aren't familiar with them but 3D printers will drastically change things in the next 10-20 years. It'll make it possible to provide digital downloads of physical products the same way MP3s did for music. Need a new cell phone case? print one up, want some toys for the kids, print some up. and so on. They can now make things with working mechanical components right out of the printer out of plastic or even ceramic. And they'll only get better with time

  • Excellent excellent review. Your review was spot. The controls really are spot on which is great since the action gets insane around stage five when the pyramids in the desert go haywire. Oh Noes! :) For the longest time this was hands down the best shooter on the T-16 for me. I recently picked up Gate of Thunder and now its a real toss-up. Just imagine how much more successful the turbografx would have been if NEC had packaged this game with the system.

  • Some people disagree with me on that point (which I brought up in the Keith Courage review). But, I still find it to be true. :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • Dammit.. i almost beaten Super Star Soldier... lol X3

  • LOL! Yes, been there myself. Actually, that one I have a harder time with.... :)

  • I just want to say, i can get to the last stage without dying once, it's just at the boss rush where i get hit a few times :/

oh, i have to agree with something,

    Hudsoft music = great

  • I've still gotta get this game but like I've said before they're just so hard to find these in the wild, yet it isn't quite as satisfying to just buy them from eBay. Well if i eventually end up cracking & decide to order a copy from eBay some day, glowing reviews like yours had better not drive up the price *shakes fist* lol

  • And in the meantime, download it VC. I know it's not the collector's dream, but it does have a suspend feature, which is much more useful than it seems.

  • Ya that's the easy part but I just wish there was some way to rig the insides of a CD jewel case so my games I bought without one would fit snugly in there. Oh well, maybe once 3D printers become more common I can get someplace to produce some copies of the TG-16 case inserts for me.

  • Definitely. Obviously back in "the day," I would have never had Japanese versions to compare to. You know?

But, looking at the differences now......they almost always are less impressive.

    Thanks!

  • Definitely!

  • And here's the one everyone's been asking for!

    Great review as always!

  • Ha ha. Ta da! :)

    Thanks!

  • 2:20 "Takin' a #2".. Lol.

"Wait, that didn't sound right".. Lol again. XD

You know, your favorite weapon reminds me a LOT of the "Sonic Wave" back-gun attachment in the PC shooter Tyrian.

  • Truly an accident, I swear!

I don't know as my "favorite weapon" is the BEST one to have. But, I love it . :)

  • Thanks for another great review. I really like your videos. One can really see that you like your TurboGrafx games and you put a lot of effort and love into your videos :-). Looking forward to your next video!

  • Thanks so much for watching. It means a lot!

I really enjoy making them and I'm glad to have friends like you to share them with.

    Take care!

  • Actually, the movie Gunhed is released along with Godzilla vs biollante in 1989 cause Toho(Creator of Gunhed) was holding a contest of making a sequel to Godzilla 1985. Well,Godzilla was supposed to fight a robot which look liked Metal Gear(would've been awesome) but Gunhed would later become its own story.

  • Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. :)

  • Yo welcome. It would be awesome if godzilla fights metal gear.

  • One of my first games, and a long-time favorite. Only complaint is the weaponry was imbalanced. I took upgraded Photon with Homing because it would fire more missiles, and everything got too easy. A few times I left my controller with a rock on it to keep firing and once it made it through the whole second level. :)

  • Ha ha. Nice. Sounds like something AGVN would do. :)

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Ahh a classic shmup for the TG16 spida.Though the game was develope by (compile) and hudson was it's publisher.

As for difficulty it was tricky spida though most shooters by compile are like that, they start easy then get hard towards the end.

Btw ever play sylphia for the pce spida ? That's another one by compile that i enjoy highly.

  • My research indicated that it was co-developed by both Compile and HS. But, regardless, it's classic Hudson Soft. Ha ha!!

No, I can't say I played Sylphia. I haven't played too many PC-Engine titles overall. You know? When did that one come out?

  • Ahh ok then on the compile thing.Btw as for sylphia spida released back in october the 22th 1993.

  • Ha ha. Well, I'm sure you're right and it was just compile. I guess looking at it from a gamer's stand-point back in 1989 (like myself), only Hudson Soft appeared on all the packaging so......what the hell would I know> LOL!! :) :)

    Oh yeah? You recommend Sylphia?

  • I see no wonder then in day those compile was realy under appreciated.

As for sylphia i'd recomemd it a bit overrated, but a solid shmup.

  • Okay, I'll try to track one down. Thanks for the tip!

  • Great as usual! I was wondering if you were going to do a blazing lazers review soon. Thanks :) What other turbo reviews can we look forward to in the coming months?

  • Hmm. Well, the next vid will be part-2 of my pinball collection series. Then we're going to do an Import review (Double Dragon 2). Then........it's a secret........ :)

  • Double Dragon 2 is one of my favorite imports that I own...can't wait.

  • I remember getting Blazing Lazers for free from a selection of games you could pick after sending in the UPC or something from the system box. I was late getting all the paperwork sent in but they sent it to me anyway. I remember thinking the intro scene was really cheesy and I found the weird side-to-side scrolling of the background rather jarring. It's not a terrible shooter, all things considered, but I don't think I could give it such a high score as you chose to.

  • Hey, that's cool that you got it for free. JEALOUS! :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • I've seen the Gunhed movie, and it was a bit shit to be honest. You couldn't see what was going on half the time as it was so dark and it was ultimately well, boring!

  • Is a factory-sealed copy worth 20 bucks?

  • Hmm. I'm not sure. I don't really follow the sealed market at all. Ask the guy at PC-Engine forums! :)

    Thanks!

  • Another fantastic review!! :D

This review is very timely for me as I have, just yesterday, bought Blazing Lazers from someone. Can't wait to try it out...finally. The only time I've had the good fortune to play this game was the demo at Radio Shack back in the day. lol

  • Awesome. Let me know what you think!

  • Greatness!

One of my favs on the system! About time you reviewed it :p

  • I know. I'm such a slow ass! LOL! :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • Great review. However, was there something America had against good video game cover art on this system? Who thought these looked better compared to the japanese version?

  • The flashing crystals you get from the powerups that change numbers/letters allow you to continue right from where you died instead of sending you back. I always avoid grabbing that at all cost cause they really come in handy at the end of the game.

  • I had that "flashing crystal" part as a much bigger part of the review (talking about it as a tip). But, I decided to just briefly mention is so someone new can figure it out for themselves (since the manual doesn't even mention that flashing-crystal idea, I'm thinking it's a special thing they wanted you to figure out yourself).

It's another great strategy though. :)

    Thanks for watching, as always!

  • starting at 0:34, we see mode-7 type scaling reminiscent of the snes. did you do this to game footage yourself or is it actual in-game footage? it reminds me a LOT of RADIANT SILVERGUN which really uses mode-7 dramatically in gameplay and for background scene changes/variety. this game somehow also reminds me of zanac on the NES. also, 6:37 reminds me of robowarrior on the NES. the bosses are nice and i don't really see slowdown. did this game have any? it runs far smoother than snes gradius

  • That was done in the video. The TG-16 wasn't capable of doing anything close to that on hardware alone (though Sapphire comes close using software emulation). And it should remind you of Zanac; both were Compile games. Compile made dozens of the best home shmups and most were lag free. Blazing Lazers doesn't really ever lag, even on God of Game difficulty where it looks like a DoDonPachi bullet hell at points.

  • Good point. Blazing Lazers doesn't lag at all. :)

    thanks for watching!

  • Very good review. I love this game and play it almost every day. I would give it 5 out of 5. Just out of curiosity what did you deduct half a point for??

  • I still feel the game is a tad unbalanced in a few areas. I just couldn't give it a perfect.......but I was close. :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • Number 2 is a good defensive weapon but it lacks the damage power that number 3 has. I tired beating this with number 2 and a shield numerous times. But I always find great success with the number 3 cause of the extra damage.

  • Oh yeah! Blazing Lazers! Very good shooter for its time. My fav weapon to use II with the multiples. Makes playing through Area 3 very fun :D

  • Sweet! Thanks for watching!!

  • I've not played this before as the TurboGrafx wasn't available in Australia as far as I know, but I was thinking of downloading this onto my brother's Wii, Now I think I will download it.

  • I'd say go for it if you like these kinds of games. It is quite fun! :)

    thanks for watching!

  • oh yeah blazing lazers great game that i like to play on the virtual console and you made a pretty good review and actually you mentioned things i didn't know about the game like speeding up your ship with select button. I'll be sure to do that next time I play the game. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see you review the Star Soldier games. and maybe Star parodier if you have it imported ;)

  • I do have Star Parodier, yes. I'm planning to do an Import review of it at some point.

Which button on the Wii is select? :)

  • Any plans on reviewing the other Soldier games? Or maybe Gate/Lords Of Thunder? :)

  • dude you actually have it imported thats fantastic. man that is a review i'm definitely looking forward to in the future and the other soldier games. In my opinion Star Parodier is the best shooter on the vc

By the way just today I gave Blazing Lazers another go and beat it using your number two weapon plus shield stategy because i usually use weapon three. by the end I had to face the final boss with no powerups but i blew him up in the end and they gave me like 50 lives for beating him lol

  • oh and to answer your question its the minus button on the wiimote right under the home button when its held sideways and on the classic controller its the minus button which say select right under it. unless you were joking in which case i kinda feel stupid :P lol

  • this really does look like an awesome game, is it expensive or can you get it for a low price? keep up the excellent work! :)

  • You can get this game for super cheap. GUNHED will cost you a little bit more, though.

  • Yeah, especially the one with all capitals. :)

    Tee hee

  • hehehe.

    GUNHED > gunhed ;)

  • Great review Chris and thanks for the memories!. This is my favourite shooter for the PC Engine (Area 4 was amazing). When GunHed was released in 1989 there was simply nothing like it on any system at the time. Here in the UK it received rave reviews with CVG magazine scoring it 96% on import review. I reckon this game was more similar to the "Aleste" shooters though than the "Star Soldier" ones (take a look at Super Aleste on the SNES for e.g.)

  • Could be. But at the time, "Star Solder" was the only game that I was familiar with. And, it reminded me of it. You know?

    Thanks for watching. As always!

  • This is the first video game I ever "beat". Its not only one of my absolute favorite TG-16 games. Its one of my favorite video games of ALL TIME. Thanks for another excellent video review Spida1a :)

  • Hey, thanks for watching. As always my friend!!

  • Love this game so much, fantastic shooter.Great review.

  • Agreed! :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • NOW THAT is a game I would love to play!

And whats great about this video Chris. February 18th is my BDay. I turn 18!

  • Excellent and Happy Birthday my friend. Mine is next week.......good ole' 27th. :)

  • Yes. :P

  • Arcade quality? I feel that the best shmups were made for the home console (e.g Gradius Gaiden, Gradius V) or those optimized for home (Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun). Not that you disagreed with that, just saying.

  • That could very well be true. Definitely. But, back in the late 80s, the Arcade was still king. The home consoles still could not live up to the graphic capabilities of the arcade (though...they were getting close) and anything that could come close to looking like an arcade-game....well, it was still highly revered. Hee hee. At least, that's how I saw it many, many, many, MANY moons ago. LOL!

    Thanks for watching!

  • Well, Gradius on the NES looked a lot like Gradius on the arcade...well, bad example. :)

BTW, Blazing Lazers was made by Compile, I dunno how much Hudson Soft did with it. So the music's not that great? That's a shame, because MUSHA (made by the same people) has fantastic music. Out of curiosity, what is your favorite TG16 shmup? Is it an obscure PC Engine game? Is it a Soldier game? Is it...something else? :)
