so many different information from zz, sweetwater, musiciandfriends, and the taylor website itself about solid sapele and laminated rosewood body ...and here i know that since 2007, laminated rosewood start using on 214...thanks dude :)
Excellent review! Great playing too. I love that you're capturing good audio. Too many people simply use their webcam mics and don't have the quality that yours does. Great job!
So this may be kind of a dumb question but can you use this guitar for all types of music like something like blues or crossroads? Ive seen on some places that orchestra models are more used for finger picking...
When you say that this is a fingerpicker's guitar, do you think this, even with the newer models, would still sound as nice as it does fingerpicking as when you strum? Great review, Thanks!
Hey, thanks for the insight ! I have my sights set on a 214ce and a review like this backs up my intentions. You did a great job on this review, and you can tell that you have experience and knowledge that can be helpful to others ! Thanks again !
great review. Do you use elixir strings? I just got a taylor 210 for christmas which came with medium gauge elixir strings. I usually use d'addario lights and I'm considering switching them.
Good review. I got the Taylor GS5E. Love it! Yeah it cost me some pretty dollars though - but worth it. I still look at getting another solid wood body acoustic, but nothing has really matched the one I have - yet. I also like Taylor's GC models.
hey dude what about the 114ce they are sapele laminate back and sides does it sound good as ur pre 2007 model need ur advice? i want to buy a budget acoustic guitar guitar
hey friend its awesome to see you playing heartfully want to ask can you share some basic lesson with me as i am a singer and playing guitar is my passion...regards
@jota3845 it is all defintely about personal preference, but i got the taylor 214 ce which is the cutaway and no regrets its awesome, and i like the looks better but thats my opinion and thousands other have different opinions, but the sound is absolutely amazing and i tried out that guitar in the store and didn't notice any different in sound, if you want i can post a review of the 214 ce
jus wanted to ask becuase im looking to get a taylor but tghe models are throwing me off. my ? is whats the difference between the 110 210 410 or the 214 for that matter. thanx
@jota3845 Maybe just a little. Not noticable enough unless playing them side by side. If you have the right woods on a cutaway model, it can sound just as full and deep.
thanks, man! great vid. i have myself a yamaha apx5a, wich is one of the first models when the apx series appeared on the market, so, their a lot better than the actual apx series. i really like it, amplified or not, but i was thinking to buy the taylor 214ce (now with the expression system, wich cool) or a martin from the same range of quality, etc, although now, those models cost here in europe like 1000 euros. this really helped me a lot, since i am a solo fingerpicker myself. thanks a lot!
just bought a new 2010 model today and i was extremely excited to see that taylor has replaced the laminate back & sides with indian rosewood! My dealer says he cant even get rid of his 300 series taylors anymore because of the new 200's.
Nope.Sorry, but it is lol. Look it up. They havent updated on the taylor website yet but you can see it on guitar centers website. They've still got both listed, last years thats laminate and this years thats rosewood. I Have a DX1R martin as well and it IS rosewood laminate back & sides and you can obviously tell the difference.
The fact that the guitar is very sensitive to scratches and stuff is just positive to me. I like the vintage look, and as long as it doesn't destroy the feel or the sound, I embrace every "wound" as a memory from practicing a certain song or bumping into something just before a gig.
I really enjoy that you put good explanations and comparisons in this video so guitar players could relate this guitar to many others. I think i have been sold on this one from this video, thanks!!!
just for anyone who is curious in buying this guitar w/ the solid sapele sides, the guitars are now sold as the "300" series. almost identical to this particular one. the laminate indian rosewood are solid as "200series" now. both fabulous guitars.
@mynameisdonaltube they don't make the TAYLOR 214 like this any more like the man said, but they have the GA3 model in their catalogue, which is made from the same woods - solid sitca sprouse top, solid sapele back and sides. looks exactly the same as the old 214 in shape too and i suppose it sounds just as good, though i hate the looks of sapele. essentially it is the old 214 renamed, i think.
very nice man`... i just bought same guitar new with laminate rosewood, and it sounds great man.. not sayin better but my buddy has a Martin with solid rosewood sides and back and mine sounds just as good! and I was very surprised at the low end this little guitar has!
Excellent review.. I have a 2007 rosewood laminate 214 and am extremely happy with it, having owned some much more expensive guitars.
One clever design feature incorporated into the 214 made possible by the using laminate is an arched braceless back. The sold odels require cross braces to prevent cracking. The parabolic shape ostensibly may enhace the sound to close that solid/laminate gap.
The recording sounds beautiful. Using the mic shown in the video? looks like a large diaphram.
I haven't got a clue about acoustics, but I'm looking for one around 400-500 dollars. Can you recommend a few, not necessarily Taylor, single or no cutaway? Thanks
Yeah if you go new you get to spend 800.00 on rosewood laminate back and sides, no thanks. There's too many solid wood guitars in that price range. This one is the 214 to get if you want one.
This is true, but not many will sound better in this price range. I compared it to some $1000-1200 Martin guitars, and the Taylor with the laminate back sounded much better.
That's the thing, we should get what we like. Generally speaking for me, once I get into this price range I'd like to go solid wood. I think there are some wonderful laminate guitars, Seagull makes some affordable beauties. Some feel that over time the alternating layers of glue in laminates will dissipate sound into the sides while a solid body has the potential to become tonally richer. Again, this is all subjective, and really it's what sounds best to us.
Hey, can you tell me your recording setup please? (which mic, how you connected it, software etc). I have a 110 and I really like how your video sounds.
I had the same guitar but a 2003, after letting the guitar sit for over a year the neck angle was so off that Taylor replaced the guitar for free with a 2010 model. I got hosed! The new guitar sounds tinny with no bass unlike my old solid wood Taylor. It sucks compared to my old one!! Listen to this guy, current laminate rosewood doesn't come close to the solid Sapele. Oh yeah the new case is made in China and is lower quality too! Don't let these guitars die, keep them humidified!!
I had a Taylor 110 (pre 2007) and loved it but had to sell it a few months ago for extra cash. It had that really nice sweet Taylor sparkle to it that I really like. I found one of these on CraigsList (04 model) and was thinking about getting it until I learned that it was designed for fingerpicking. How does the strumming sound compare to a 210? I do a lot of both picking and strumming and I'm thinking that the body shape might add a little extra low end, which my 110 seemed to lack.
@EmotionToilet While the 214 is a smaller body size, usually better for fingerpicking, I find it responds very well to even heavy strumming, especially with Phosphor Bronze strings. Plenty of low end for me. A 210 wouldn't be much different for a 110 in that regard.
I'm thinking about getting this guitar. I like to sing and play at the same time, do you think this guitar is good for that? Some people say they think it's too loud. Please reply! :)
Nice guitar review (well mic'd) and some nice playing. Well done!
There aren't too many of the solid sapele 214s available so you did well to get hold of a used one. Although I've got a 614ce, I'd be delighted to get hold of an early 214 for general use but it doesn't help I'm a lefty.
I just picked up a 214ce (2009?). A similar model with the cutaway and electronic pickups. I am very happy with the feel and playing of the guitar, but like you mentioned, the laminate is getting to me! I'm just starting to get the feel of it, but the tone is lacking some serious bass. Maybe it's the cutaway, but what kind of guitar would you recommend if I wanted to trade it for an acoustic/electric around the same price with the highest quality?
solid sapele 214 is really great sounding. i was thinking of buying it, but at the time i also wanted a tacoma baritone and i opted for it, because i already had a guild jf55 six string. last year i looked again for the taylor and sadly i discovered the downgrade-laminate rosewood instead of solid sapele. finally i bought a seagull electic-acoustic.
nice guitar for an older model but would not recomend a new taylor in the 110 or 210 series the best taylor in my opinion is a dn3 in the lower price range
because the black binding, the sapele, that´s all the specs that the 114 has... a 214 has a white binding and rosewood on back and sides, that´s why I was wondering
As I said in the video, the 200 series was redesigned in recent years, changing the back and sides to rosewood, as well as the binding color. See any of the related videos for examples of pre-2006 214 models.

@CarlPlaysMusic I'd give it a while, see if the sound doesn't grow on you.
If you remain unhappy with it, maybe try some different strings (I use phosphor bronze D'Addarios), see if that changes your tone.
If not, then I'd look into maybe a Blueridge, or a different model Taylor.
