I remember listening to this song on my class breaks when I was in Prep School in the late '70's. It sounds even better today, probably because the music & lyrics are underscored by life experience.
evry musician even the legends like elton & sir paul & dylan take their hat off to brian..he is the man he started it all from the late 50's early 60's he was the tunesmith..
i guess getting older means having emotions closer to the sufrace. this music never made me cry when i was a kid. now i cant help it. maybe its because i appreciate beauty more now that ive seen the ugliness people inflict on others, and the harmony, purity, and innocence of beach boys music means so much more.

You obviously came from another planet of which I implore you to return to. Since when did looks make someone other than what you think they are? Tell it to Steven Hawking ô¿ô
Could someone who knows keyboards and music, please explain what EJ meant at sec 45 to 50, with regards to BW, "moving the goalposts" when it came to writing songs??? Elton said he was getting 'very technical', and it sure sounds like it !
I would like to have some understanding of what Elton meant, if that's possible, without giving me a semester of music lessons.
I am just a consumer of great music, not a creator.
@Jeff5196 What it means is kinda hard to explain in normal terms.
A C-Chord normally has the notes CEG, most people in the bass will play a C note. Brian went and would tell people to play an E Or G in the bass. It is something that no one did back then.
"Moving the goal posts" is just an analogy for "changing the game". The technical point is equally simple. Basic chords, a.k.a. triads, contain 3 notes. Think of them as every other white key on a piano (take a, c & e from abcdefga to get an A minor chord) . EJ is crediting BW with using the c or the e as the lowest note. The idea has been around for ever, e.g. in jazz or anything post-Monteverdi in classical - though maybe was "rediscovered." BW did lots of stuff so well. . .
@gpawlicki Thank you for that. I realize now that I need to know alot more about music, if I am ever going to understand what you just said. Maybe I will someday.
"one of the first composer to hit the 5th instead of the root of the chord on the bass", that's so true, God Only Knows is the perfect example for that.
It's nice to hear Brian and Elton sing together, two great singers. I've never been a huge fan of Elton's music, but his singing is wonderful.
It is just soooo good to see these two legendary artists up on stage together ... Elton's words here are poignant, & so true .. pure & simple .. exquisite !!
in the 60s i wasnt very keen on the beach boys but since live aid ,i love them ,and this video is fantastic,i like brian wilson,he sings like an ordinary man,but with a huge experience of life ,the ups and downs
When was this recorded? I don't think Brian sings quite this much anymore. He let's his band handle lead vocals while he occasionally claps and sings back-ups.
Can't believe Brian can still sing so well. I hate to say it but vocally he made Elton John look bad. Elton's a genius in his own right, but man... Brian Wilson is a all the way amazing guy.
Bach was contemporary. His music was contemporary for his time. Buddy Holly, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Les Paul were all contemporary for their time and all used inverted chords.
i love brain wislon, but for the record he was not the first person to play a 3rd or a 5th etc under a chord instead of a bass note. thats just ridiculous, theyve been doing that since before bach
You can see the toll that mental illness has taken on Brian. Damn shame too. One of the most prolific song writers of our time. Such a great song. Elton pulls it off also.
what?! Pet Sounds is perfect as it is; and what do you mean "music-wise"? You noticed the bridges. You have probably never listened to Pet Sounds through the headphones, as Brian suggests. You're right this is good!

Was Bach & his predecessors a contemporary songwriter ? No.
What Elton said is true. Brian was ONE of the first to do it (play non-roots in the left hand).
