  • I think it's very easy to see who is better; Sylvie hands down. She has an overall better sense of pacing & space; her attitude turns are well timed; she has better control & knows how to handle a pose (call it performance even) for example as she holds her last pique turn. She know how to "dance" between the steps and emphasis is on beginnings and endings. On the other hand Platel falls out of her last turn on the first set of attitude turn series & it's dancing w/o feeling for the steps.

  • While Guillem is a superhuman force of nature, I think Mme Platel embodies the "Classique" in this variation a bit more.

    They are both incredible!

  • I want those feet.

  • elisabet is delicate is perfect

  • Guillem is great..the extension of her legs and that grace of hers.....but, in this variation, I prefer Platel...she is beautiful and the precision of her movements..it's amazing.

Both of them are stars...and legendary!

  • platel was more graceful and fluent. loved it!

  • Please help me track this music... Anyone know where I can get it? Or at least what the piece is called, composer details etc... Any help would be appreciated xxx

  • @kaosheng84 the piece is called Grand pas classique, the composer is Auber. Do you still need this variation??

  • It is Sylvie who wears the Crown.

  • 2 stili diversi...ma guillem è la perfezione!

  • Je préfere Elisabeth Platel.

  • I'm with Sylvie. Their movements are more fluid and organic.

  • i like sylvie guillem better...or shall i say j'ai prefere sylvie! lol yeah..

  • What was the age difference? if any of the dancers .

  • Thank you so much for the opportunity to see this!!!!! Many thanks!!!

  • Here I like Platel better, she was more into the music and showed more control on the killer diagonale... but I like it better old school with Gabriela Komleva!

  • I LOVE them both

  • I think that they both r beautiful dancers and they both did a great job!! =} Thnk u 4 posting.. lol

  • So different but both so amazing!Sylvie with her amazing extensions and Elizabeth with all her class! The music is by Auber.

  • What's the name of the music used in Grand Pas Classique?

  • sylvie!!

  • sylvie guillem absolutely!!

  • I ADORE Sylvie Guillem! Here I don't beleive her dancing was very sophisticated (it is also my personal beleif that Guillem did and prefers not to dance in the classical style -look at her Don Quixote - although classical, she did incorporate some "Guillem" moves). She does not do classical roles anymore. Platel had been dancing for awhile here it seems. While both ballerinas are different - It is interesting to compare and contrast.

  • I rate Platel danced it musically with better accents. But Sylvie is a Star.

  • sylvie....truly is the best person that has EVER danced.

  • c'etait sylvie guillem!

  • Ah ok merci!

  • muy bella ^^

  • I think the comparison is interesting to see what goes into and out of fashion in ballet, but as far as which one is better, that seems to me to be a moot point as they are totally different dancers--Platel light and delicate and Guillem more terrestrial.

  • I think that they both could've done it a lot better-neither of their balances are consistent, I think I would rather see someone balance maybe not as long but right on the music and consistent than these two who really try to sustain their balance until the last second which makes their landing look a bit dodgy. Still great though!

    Thanks for sharing

  • the 2nd girl may be better than sylvie guillem was AT THAT TIME but she doesnt have the glow and radiance that sylvie has. personally i think sylvie has more class.

  • Actually the Guillem version is from the late 90's. It is her live performance at the Hans Christian Anderson Awards.

  • I apologize, that was a typo--I meant to type 80's. 1988 I believe.

  • Too bad her OLDER/RECENT grand pas classique, where she wears the BLACK TUTU with the ORANGE BOB-CUT WIG is commercially unavailable. That was the quintessential Grand Pas Classique of Sylvie Guillem that became a trademark after she danced that at the World Ballet Festival in 1997. Here, she's still too young (I believe this was shot in the late 80s) and her technique is not as refined as it was when she did it in the late 90s.

  • I really cant decided. I just wish Platels exentions where a little higher. She does have extention. I don't know why she doesnt use it... maybe someone can answer me that

  • Back when that was filmed, high extensions were not in style the way they are today. As balletic fashions changed, Platel raised her legs, but only (IMO) when appropriate for the choreography.

  • PLATEL 10000000 TIMES BETTER

  • i love Sylvie's version. Her exensions are SOO beautiful to watch! They are both really great though :)

  • whats this music from i always hear it but i never know wat it is like from what play?

  • I love Elisabeth Platel's rendition - sheer elegance & loveliness. Was not a huge fan of her Gamzatti in La Bayadere, but she's gorgeous here!

  • Not so much as a hint of athleticism or effort in Mlle. Platel's impeccable interpretation - a sheer joy to watch.

  • i personally find platel's version much better.. i only wish her extensions were higher..

  • Her extensions don't need to be higher- she's well within the standard for classical technique. It's become the fashion to hyper-extend, which to my thinking looks more like gymnastics than ballet.

  • yea that's right.. acrobatic ballet today is en vogue

  • Platel has more regularity in the timing of her turns, and yet still more spontaneity as well.

  • Magnifique ! ENCORE !

  • I love how she did the pirouette from the high a la seconde extension.

  • The first ballerina is Sylvie Guillem, the second Elizabeth Platel. Isn´t it ?
