@callmebetty89 I disagree. I'm a fan of the Dirty Projectors, and of this rendition, but I can imagine that there are many discerning listeners of good music who would not like this band. They are challenging, baroque, strange. It's like claiming that someone is afraid of good food because they don't like eating oysters on the half shell. Just because they won't eat oysters doesn't mean they don't like leeks. (umm, did I push that metaphor too far?)
It's really easy to be pretentious when you're surrounded by idiots who don't even know the most elementary concepts of music. Consider actually thinking about what you are listening to before making a judgement. Also, fuck you.
It's really good to see someone actually playing an acoustic rather than just playing 4 chords and whining about shit no one cares about. I love the female vocals too. Beautiful.

That man should stop singing immediately. He absolutely have no singing voice and obviously no sense either. And what is the point anyway; especially in Amber Coffman he has one of the most brigthly talented female singers backing him. She should always be in the foregound and if she can't be the frontfigure in Dirty Projectors, she should go solo or start her own band now
this song got my attention when I heard it on the radio because the girls had mentioned how the timing of the chords they had to hit made no sense to them individually but all together it somehow works
@NewHomeMovies Yes, Nat Baldwin! He's my cousin. I barely see him anymore, though, he's so busy! It's surreal that he's in such an amazing, successful band now. He plays double bass as a soloist and does vocals at the same time. You should check out his music!
I, along with many people believe music has gone downhill since the sixties and seventies (the 90's was a breath of fresh air for some time), however, I think this band is as good as a great band from back then.

@zorgitron I wouldn't doubt it. I saw early on, being in the same generation, that this type of music would draw rancor eventually. This music is so pretentious and embodies everything that's wrong with our generation's superficiality. Their lyrics are so mundane and he is such a mediocre singer. He is only pretty competent and mildly talented at guitar too. I knew when "experimental" became the new keyword sometime back it would become a precursor to soulless music like The Dirty Projectors.
@HeurtoSkeurto oh dude, totally forgot youre a better guitarist than him and you have your own band which over 103,000 people would search to listen to on youtube. also, if you think this music has 'no soul', than you have just that. no soul. this song makes me happy., so thats whats wrong with our generation? happiness? do everyone here a favor and go to starbucks and order your thai tea with your mac and continue to act stuck up.

honestly DP kinda discourages me from tryin to make music. You always try to come up with something original or whatever but listening to there stuff, it's just so unique and unheard of that there's really nothing you can do to top it. where or how is he getting these harmonies and just notes and shit? there's barely time signatures and yet he bobs his head and just pulls this crazy stuff out his ass
@zorgitron of course no one is claiming he's the best at playing guitar and harmonizing at the same time, but YOU are an idiot or ignorant if you think what he's doing isn't respectable. and if you can admit that what he's doing deserves at least SOME respect than i have no idea what you're going to such lengths to troll for. you think dirty projectors are overrated. cool. go listen to radiohead. how do you have enough time to sit here and debate this
When I bought Bitte Orca the expanded edition, I deleted the live tracks because they were too perfect and sounded almost identical to the studio tracks (just like this performance). So I didn't see the point of keeping them :-P That's a compliment to the band, of course.
@MagicTurtle643 What i gather from this comment is that you are a retarded motherfucker. You have downe syndrome or some shit. Why would you delete something that sounds like THIS?
@whitebloodcell305 Wow. Hold on, are you a fan of the band? Because if so you completely misread all of my comments. I deleted the live tracks from my ipod and itunes because they sounded so similar to the studio recording that I didn't see the point, but kept the files on my computer. It was supposed to be a compliment to their skills as a band. And if you don't like the band... then your comment is worded oddly. :-P Overall point: I like this performance. Sheesh. Throw a fit.
@MagicTurtle643 I do like the band. I LOVE the band which is why I dont understand how somebody can be so abismally retarded as to delete any recording by them. So in conclusion, fuck you.
@whitebloodcell305 Whooooa. Hahaha you're a firecracker of anger. I love the band too. Let's both relax here and share some DP appreciation, at least. All I'm saying is I didn't want to have two versions of the same song on my iPod because the live tracks are so perfect that they are practically the same recording. So that's it. Is that hard to fathom? I don't put live tracks on my mp3 players because they're not as good as studio recordings. Except the Fiery Furnaces who re-write songs live.
@whitebloodcell305 Hahahaha. I love you too. Sorry if my comment confused you. I realize it was kind of a weird thing to post/do. But I still have the live tracks on my hard drive if I ever want them so they're safe. Haha.
@MagicTurtle643 We've been through a rough patch in our internet relationship but something tells me we're good now. I was only kidding by the way I had "No Intention" to hurt your feelings. By the way I want those tracks.
@whitebloodcell305 Hahah that's funny, I had thought about working "No Intention" into a comment somehow but couldn't think of a way. You want the live tracks?
@zorgitron newsflash homie, you're a nobody & come on being waaay more pretentious than Longstreth does. & as for being a weak musician, that's one of the most ignorant things I've ever read on youtube. learn to play what he's playing on guitar and sing in harmony.. we might also note that none of the "weak, pretentious" musicians that go to your college have videos being discussed on youtube.. so clearly it wouldn't do right to compare them now would it..
@katinkers There is a vast universe of musicians who play guitar and sing in harmony WELL. You're an idiot or ignorant if you think this is one of the higher points of musicianship or composing a badass song. I'll reply as long as you lame fanboys keep posting! :)
A much better version of this same type of soft, acoustic kind of song, played by a real musician who knows music and knows his own skills is called "Over the Hills and Far Away" by Led Zeppelin. Yeah, a tired example but still valid.
@imsohoodphab 4 comments in a row because I can't escape from this grating sound of Dirty Projectors. Everyone my age is blasting this horse shit. They just plain suck. You guys are like a bunch of religions fanatics and insist upon things that aren't there, like good sounds. Most of you don't even use correct terminology. I do know good music, and I'm quite open minded about music, but this is really just loud and dissonant and terrible. I thought it was a joke band.
@AwonWps Yes, badly dissonant. Is dissonance always a good thing? And yes, the singers are singing excessively loud for this type of song. Yeah... just pissed off that a number of people around me consider this to be intelligent or even good music. I just don't want to accept that people are that stupid.
@zorgitron No, but it's not necessarily bad. I also don't see what's so dissonant about this. The vocal harmonies, which you say you find excessively loud and are definitely the loudest part of the song, are pretty consonant. Whether or not this is "good music" is a matter of opinion, how can you say that someone is stupid for liking it? Is this more simple that most people make it out to be? Perhaps, but that still doesn't make it bad. It's not like they don't know how to play their instruments
@AwonWps "Whether or not this is "good music" is a matter of opinion, how can you say that someone is stupid for liking it?" Then how do you feel about the intelligence of people who are fans of N'sync, The Jonas Bros., or Nickelback and regard them as musical geniuses? Enjoying this music is NOT STUPID, but insisting that it is high art, superior and ground-breaking music IS stupidity or just ignorance. And that is what many DP fans DO.
@zorgitron You said that you were "pissed off" that people "consider this to be intelligent or even good music," not that they regard it as high art. Considering something good and being high art are quite different. As for the N'sync etc comment, I would probably say that those people are a bit confused. I still don't quite understand your major gripe about DP is. The way the vocals are placed into the songs, sporadically, or using hocketing, isn't something you often hear in this type of music
@zorgitron The guitar lines are quite nice and also abnormal, the man can clearly play guitar very well, just listen to Temescula Sunrise. As well, the song structures are varied and not typical pop music song structures. By the way, I still want an explanation for why you find this so dissonant.
@AwonWps Ok I listened that song, and his guitar skills are even shittier than in this song. He just plain flubs so many notes and doesn't stick to any time signature, mostly because he can't keep up with own music. It's so dissonant because the girls fail at harmonizing. I dunno, I think it's just a matter of time before you all realize how lifeless and weak this music is. Maybe you already have. Of course, you'll never admit that in front of me. Some of my friends have though.
@zorgitron I'm not a huge fan of DP but from reading your comments I have got to say you come out sounding ignorant as shit, the change in tempo on most of their songs, the loud harmonics... that's done of purpose you tard! Your so critical of this music, why don't you come out with something better, post it on youtube, and see how many people bash your shit. Everyone else that has posted likes this band, except for you, maybe stick to watching vids you like? i dunno
@faferman I know it's done on purpose, but they suck at doing it. Their playing is really sloppy because they're not spectacular musicians, which is fine, but he's deliberately trying to make his music really complicated so that it seems intelligent and experimental, instead of trying to make a good song. I do know what I'm talking about in music, and I do know what I'm talking about with Dirty Projectors because I've met dozens of weak, pretentious musicians like Longstreth at my college.
@zorgitron Which of the following positions are you defending? 1) "He doesn't stick to any time signature, mostly because he can't keep up with own music." or 2) "I know it's ["it" = the changes in tempo, among other things] done on purpose, but they suck at doing it." If both, how are you reconciling them?
@Gavril92 I feel that DP changes time signatures just to be cute instead of trying to make a serious song that means something. I've heard songs with good time signature changes, and it FEELS right. DP doesn't. It's not as if he's "exploring", because people have been messing with time signatures for a long time, and skillfully, with purpose.
@zorgitron The switch to 7/8 time is an allusion to the 78rpm format, which here functions as a metaphor for the musical past. This conceptual juxtaposition (the retro secreted in the nouveau) is intended to convey the cyclical chronology of musical style, a notion that is reflected in microcosm in the physical motion of the 78rpm record (hence the extensive use of ostinato). The 7/8 time signature also imparts a martial quality, thereby alluding to global militarisation post-9/11.
@zorgitron The real question, post 9/11, is not whether it is possible to make art about the World Trade Centre attack, but whether it is possible not to. Longstreth's strategy of non-engagement is an inspired response: by appearing to ignore the matter altogether, he manages to address it obliquely, using changes in time signature to explore the fluctuating modalities of public perception of the event. The title 'No Intention' can be read as an allusion to this strategy, among other things.
@TheReactorSings I know that you mean well, and you are well informed, but these details aren't intentional. And yes I realize the irony. Also, just listen to the damn song!
@drumjoey Nah there's no way TheReactorSings is serious. He's overly analyzing insignificant details of the song like a delusional literature professor. I've met people who do that as a joke, to make fun of that sort of thing. If he's serious, then god help us all. And I like how you put two periods in your sentence to emphasis how serious "you" are.
@Lew1826 I'm sorry. Five months ago was a hard time for me. My mother was diagnosed with leukemia, and then my cat got run over by a Renault Megane Scenic ('97 model). Not to mention I got kicked out of university for refusing to speak English, except in written exams. (Plus, I had this really persistent eczema on my inner thighs.) So, anyway, I guess that over-analysing the music of the Dirty Projectors on YouTube was just my way of compensating for all of that. I hope you understand. Peace.
@TheReactorSings I don't care if you like it. If you're not trying to outwardly promote your own intelligence to other by declaring your love for DP that's fine. I just think Dirty Projector fans should be keeping their weak, crappy music to themselves. It doesn't matter, all of my acquaintances who jumped onto the Dirty Projector band wagon have already realized how lame it is and jumped off within a week (but not before they told everyone how brilliant and "intelligent" it is).
@faferman I started commenting on these vids after staying up all night for work and having to listen to my neighbor blast Bitte Orca over and over again, and I felt I had to say something about this shit. Once I got some sleep, the anger wore off but replying to all these comments is way too much fun. How about YOU just enjoy your music and don't read my comments? I'm just trying to inform people, but you've already made up your mind so move along.
@MagicTurtle643 Ah ok. So if I can't play a song myself, then it must be above my understanding and therefore it is good music. Hahahahaha, your previous post is retarded. Who cares if you deleted your tracks? Jesus christ.
@zorgitron Hahaha obviously by saying you couldn't play I was implying that it's a complicated guitar part for anyone to play. Quit avoiding the obvious argument with your trollish schemes :-P And the fans of the Projectors would obviously be interested in my first comment because my point was the band sounds so good live that I didn't need the tracks. Nom nom troll likes food!
@imsohoodphab There are thousands of composers who break down what you think a song should sound like. Why does this band deserve the attention? GOOD MARKETING! They're young, attractive, and wear clothes that you might wear.
One doesn't need to diss another genre of music in order to convince others that the band you like is brilliant. Why can't I like Dirty Projectors and Lady Gaga simultaneously?
Amazing. Complex arrangement, unusual riffs, and virtuosic execution, but still a lovely song. Not many bands out there that merge all things so flawlessly.
@pegasusgiraffe It's not complex. Guitar is pretty simple. The harmonies that the vocalists use in this song are used in almost all songs on the album. They just reuse them. It's just slapped together, and you're confused, and just assume that it's "virtuosic" because you're confused.
@zorgitron "The harmonies that the vocalists use in this song are used in almost all songs on the album." So, half or more of the songs on the album have exactly (or almost exactly) these harmonies?
@Gavril92 They're the same style of harmony, applied to all of their songs instead of varying them considerably or leaving them out to fit the song. Maybe they are in different keys or not completely identical, but they go seem to go for the same effect when they harmonize instead of changing it up or doing a more fitting singing technique. I feel they are not needed in this song, but they were thrown in anyway. I guess it's just to make sure the girls are included, but it ruins a nice song.
Beautiful stuff, but so frustrating when, during the ending guitar solo, the camera show a close up of the bass players face and the back side of the guitar. Everything but the plucking. Argh.
I am going to marry all the girls in this band.

MagicTurtle643 1 year ago
@MagicTurtle643 What i gather from this comment is that you are a retarded motherfucker. You have downe syndrome or some shit. Why would you delete something that sounds like THIS?
whitebloodcell305 1 year ago
@whitebloodcell305 Wow. Hold on, are you a fan of the band? Because if so you completely misread all of my comments. I deleted the live tracks from my ipod and itunes because they sounded so similar to the studio recording that I didn't see the point, but kept the files on my computer. It was supposed to be a compliment to their skills as a band. And if you don't like the band... then your comment is worded oddly. :-P Overall point: I like this performance. Sheesh. Throw a fit.
MagicTurtle643 1 year ago
@MagicTurtle643 I do like the band. I LOVE the band which is why I dont understand how somebody can be so abismally retarded as to delete any recording by them. So in conclusion, fuck you.
PS. Suck my cock.
whitebloodcell305 1 year ago

& as for being a weak musician, that's one of the most ignorant things I've ever read on youtube. learn to play what he's playing on guitar and sing in harmony.. we might also note that none of the "weak, pretentious" musicians that go to your college have videos being discussed on youtube.. so clearly it wouldn't do right to compare them now would it..
katinkers 1 year ago
@katinkers There is a vast universe of musicians who play guitar and sing in harmony WELL. You're an idiot or ignorant if you think this is one of the higher points of musicianship or composing a badass song. I'll reply as long as you lame fanboys keep posting! :)

A much better version of this same type of soft, acoustic kind of song, played by a real musician who knows music and knows his own skills is called "Over the Hills and Far Away" by Led Zeppelin. Yeah, a tired example but still valid.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@imsohoodphab 4 comments in a row because I can't escape from this grating sound of Dirty Projectors. Everyone my age is blasting this horse shit. They just plain suck. You guys are like a bunch of religions fanatics and insist upon things that aren't there, like good sounds. Most of you don't even use correct terminology. I do know good music, and I'm quite open minded about music, but this is really just loud and dissonant and terrible. I thought it was a joke band.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron You say "dissonant" as if it was a bad thing. And loud? Really?
AwonWps 1 year ago
@AwonWps Yes, badly dissonant. Is dissonance always a good thing? And yes, the singers are singing excessively loud for this type of song. Yeah... just pissed off that a number of people around me consider this to be intelligent or even good music. I just don't want to accept that people are that stupid.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron No, but it's not necessarily bad. I also don't see what's so dissonant about this. The vocal harmonies, which you say you find excessively loud and are definitely the loudest part of the song, are pretty consonant. Whether or not this is "good music" is a matter of opinion, how can you say that someone is stupid for liking it? Is this more simple that most people make it out to be? Perhaps, but that still doesn't make it bad. It's not like they don't know how to play their instruments
AwonWps 1 year ago
@AwonWps "Whether or not this is "good music" is a matter of opinion, how can you say that someone is stupid for liking it?" Then how do you feel about the intelligence of people who are fans of N'sync, The Jonas Bros., or Nickelback and regard them as musical geniuses? Enjoying this music is NOT STUPID, but insisting that it is high art, superior and ground-breaking music IS stupidity or just ignorance. And that is what many DP fans DO.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron You said that you were "pissed off" that people "consider this to be intelligent or even good music," not that they regard it as high art. Considering something good and being high art are quite different. As for the N'sync etc comment, I would probably say that those people are a bit confused. I still don't quite understand your major gripe about DP is. The way the vocals are placed into the songs, sporadically, or using hocketing, isn't something you often hear in this type of music
AwonWps 1 year ago
@zorgitron The guitar lines are quite nice and also abnormal, the man can clearly play guitar very well, just listen to Temescula Sunrise. As well, the song structures are varied and not typical pop music song structures. By the way, I still want an explanation for why you find this so dissonant.
AwonWps 1 year ago
@AwonWps Ok I listened that song, and his guitar skills are even shittier than in this song. He just plain flubs so many notes and doesn't stick to any time signature, mostly because he can't keep up with own music. It's so dissonant because the girls fail at harmonizing. I dunno, I think it's just a matter of time before you all realize how lifeless and weak this music is. Maybe you already have. Of course, you'll never admit that in front of me. Some of my friends have though.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron I'm not a huge fan of DP but from reading your comments I have got to say you come out sounding ignorant as shit, the change in tempo on most of their songs, the loud harmonics... that's done of purpose you tard! Your so critical of this music, why don't you come out with something better, post it on youtube, and see how many people bash your shit. Everyone else that has posted likes this band, except for you, maybe stick to watching vids you like? i dunno
faferman 1 year ago
@faferman I know it's done on purpose, but they suck at doing it. Their playing is really sloppy because they're not spectacular musicians, which is fine, but he's deliberately trying to make his music really complicated so that it seems intelligent and experimental, instead of trying to make a good song. I do know what I'm talking about in music, and I do know what I'm talking about with Dirty Projectors because I've met dozens of weak, pretentious musicians like Longstreth at my college.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron Which of the following positions are you defending? 1) "He doesn't stick to any time signature, mostly because he can't keep up with own music." or 2) "I know it's ["it" = the changes in tempo, among other things] done on purpose, but they suck at doing it." If both, how are you reconciling them?
Gavril92 1 year ago
@Gavril92 I feel that DP changes time signatures just to be cute instead of trying to make a serious song that means something. I've heard songs with good time signature changes, and it FEELS right. DP doesn't. It's not as if he's "exploring", because people have been messing with time signatures for a long time, and skillfully, with purpose.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron The switch to 7/8 time is an allusion to the 78rpm format, which here functions as a metaphor for the musical past. This conceptual juxtaposition (the retro secreted in the nouveau) is intended to convey the cyclical chronology of musical style, a notion that is reflected in microcosm in the physical motion of the 78rpm record (hence the extensive use of ostinato). The 7/8 time signature also imparts a martial quality, thereby alluding to global militarisation post-9/11.
TheReactorSings 1 year ago
@TheReactorSings You can't be serious.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron The real question, post 9/11, is not whether it is possible to make art about the World Trade Centre attack, but whether it is possible not to. Longstreth's strategy of non-engagement is an inspired response: by appearing to ignore the matter altogether, he manages to address it obliquely, using changes in time signature to explore the fluctuating modalities of public perception of the event. The title 'No Intention' can be read as an allusion to this strategy, among other things.
TheReactorSings 1 year ago
@TheReactorSings I know that you mean well, and you are well informed, but these details aren't intentional. And yes I realize the irony. Also, just listen to the damn song!

@drumjoey Nah there's no way TheReactorSings is serious. He's overly analyzing insignificant details of the song like a delusional literature professor.

I'm just trying to inform people, but you've already made up your mind so move along.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron Try learning the acoustic intro to Temecula Sunrise. Then play that throughout the song while singing a complex melody in key. Good luck.
MagicTurtle643 1 year ago
@MagicTurtle643 Ah ok. So if I can't play a song myself, then it must be above my understanding and therefore it is good music. Hahahahaha, your previous post is retarded. Who cares if you deleted your tracks? Jesus christ.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron Hahaha obviously by saying you couldn't play I was implying that it's a complicated guitar part for anyone to play. Quit avoiding the obvious argument with your trollish schemes :-P And the fans of the Projectors would obviously be interested in my first comment because my point was the band sounds so good live that I didn't need the tracks. Nom nom troll likes food!

Amazing. Complex arrangement, unusual riffs, and virtuosic execution, but still a lovely song. Not many bands out there that merge all things so flawlessly.
pegasusgiraffe 1 year ago 4
@pegasusgiraffe It's not complex. Guitar is pretty simple. The harmonies that the vocalists use in this song are used in almost all songs on the album. They just reuse them. It's just slapped together, and you're confused, and just assume that it's "virtuosic" because you're confused.
zorgitron 1 year ago
@zorgitron "The harmonies that the vocalists use in this song are used in almost all songs on the album." So, half or more of the songs on the album have exactly (or almost exactly) these harmonies?
Gavril92 1 year ago
@Gavril92 They're the same style of harmony, applied to all of their songs instead of varying them considerably or leaving them out to fit the song. Maybe they are in different keys or not completely identical, but they go seem to go for the same effect when they harmonize instead of changing it up or doing a more fitting singing technique. I feel they are not needed in this song, but they were thrown in anyway. I guess it's just to make sure the girls are included, but it ruins a nice song.
