They are on a weekend dril, as they are the national guard. Yes they do carry weapons, however note the weapons are unloaded and there is no amunition. That is what they were doing there....passing through to thier training location.

Every year military motor transport troop's have to have an amount of it to stay current in their MOS along with other training . That's why you some time's see them in mass on the road . Why they had the pistols I don't know . But that's the army and I was a Marine , we do thing's difrently .

Americans are rightly nervous about military occupation since the repeal of the Posse Commitatus Act is still very new. One wonders how armed soldiers are going to go about providing civilian relief. They aren't exactly medical support staff. The relief they provide is to supplement law enforcement, and hence carry the connotation of martial law.

One repsonsibility of a member of the military is to protect federal property. Most likely anyone with rifles were not carrying ammo, the carriers of pistols had one loaded mag. For the people that are screaming unfair, last time I checked any person with a firearm license can pick up a Beretta 92FS or an AR15.

If you're referring to running for office, there are "people like me" in the NH house of representatives, I believe about 6 of them, trying to get laws changed. There are tons more sending emails to representatives and senators, doing grassroots "lobbying". So some of us ARE joining.

And anyone with the ability to think independently and critically is capable of realizing that some laws are bad. If my breaking a law does not negatively affect anyone else, I see no point in following that law.

They were the National guard members stationed out of the Hastings Avenue armory. They were providing relief and support to local communities during the ice storm. Patroling areas that people had evacuated, traffic control, and distrubution of drinking water. They maintain there "side" arms as per protocol. The local "goverment people" as your type refer to them, were overwhelmed, and a majority of citizens were requesting help.

Military units conduct exercises and manuvers in the U.S. and overseas. It is common for military personnel to be issued their weapons during exercises. Without knowing the purpose or mission of the convoy, it's difficult to speculate about what the convoy was doing or why they were doing it.

I think we need more facts before making judgements.

Armor, personal armor, and crew served weapons would indicate a stronger presence or reason than a few humvees driving around.

A better question is are they officers, enlisted, National Guard or a different branch of the military.

the appropriate thing to do when it appears that the military is "coming to town" is to call the local "authorities"(I know, I know) and ask if there is an NBC(nuclear/biological/chemica­l) Martial Law Emergency or other situation that requires military presence.

And, of course, call Porc 411 and get as many cameras out there as possible. It's going to be up to the people on the street to get the inside information out to the masses in a rapid, efficient, and timely manner.

Rights of troops is a different issue. They are agents of the military and have a different set of rules under the UCMJ and are not able to use the US Constitution for protection as we are. For example, they dont have a right to speech, to gather ect?
