Tried this after it happened to me in a gold match, I did it in 3 v3 and got the opponets to pretty much rage quit. also good against tanks. Can pick them up seiged.
@clbeav Each phoenix he picks up is less damage being done. There were too many queens to lift all of them at the same time and still kill them all. The queen anti-air dps is too high to stick around unless you are killing them all.
@enjoymentness no that's where you are wrong. there were 3 queens but he had 6-8 phoenixes and they can pick off a queen with ease then move away quickly. Queens are incredibly valuable (more than drones).
I think that going forge with cannon to block the ramp with 1 sentry to forcefield would have worked better. That way the zerglings would have had no chance.
@zqmbfg eh, biggest protoss unit is i think the immortal, though you may be able to pick up archons, biggest terrran unit is the siege tank, and biggest zerg units i probably gonna be the queen, or the infester
i think i have a better version of this one, it leaves u with better economy. do the forge FE in a safe map like lost temple or jungle basin. put your forge, 2-5 canons, and a gate, expo and then put your dual assimilator and the cyber core, then the dual stargate, mass pheonix till u get like 5 and kill overloards and drones, when u move out with your air, put like 4 gates and a robo or wateever u want to transition, thats how i do it :)

@suckieduckie not really, you use ALL chrono boost on the stargates and +1 air, and HIDE those stargates, that is key. even if you dont do lots of damage you have map control and they will ripe threw mutas so you have air superiority as well

@Petrified3 In this case, you should have done severe economic damage. In an emergency, you could lift up the roaches/throw up some stalkers if you have the gas for it.

That was the first time a tried this, its worked fine a souple other times. I found that putting 1-2 cannons up can scare them off

@xtr333m Three phoenixes require 2 graviton beams to kill a queen, so it takes alot more time, if more queens come you risk loosing a phoenix and it also costs more energy to do so. Better have 4 or 5 phoenixes for queens. Once tats done rape all you want XD : )
well with the roach buff in the 1.1.2 patch, more zerg might be more inclined to go roach when they see the protoss wall-in so this will only help toss players if zerg decide to sit on roaches longer in the beginning instead of teching straight to hydras.
Nice vid, can anyone tell me though, if you're going to build 2 gates, why not just go vr's instead of phoenixes? Seems to me 3 vr's would be better in almost every way than 5 phoenixes.

i feel like i'd be screwed if the zerg somehow got a lot of roaches soon, considering i'd be gas starved and not have enough stalkers to properly deal with it. is that unnatural?
A nice transition if you are holding your opponent down with the harass is to start pumping void rays once you get your expo up. I've found that 2 semi-saturated bases can fully support 2 stargates worth of void rays as well as 5 gateways.
This build can be counterd by the zerg because when he scouted the stargates he should of build spore crawlers and teched to hydralisks immedatly making the harrasment usless also he could have attacked with the lingsmuch earler when HD had less defence
@Movement187 I thought you mean transitions into. If his gameplan is to go roachling early push, if he pushes before you have phoenixes he won't be able to break in. I've had it tried to me with 6 roaches and maybe 12 zerglings. I had 3 zealots on the ramp, 3 stalkers behind the gateways. His roaches won't be able to break up a ramp with 3-5 stalkers waiting. Just get warpgates early to be safe. And if he does that, transition into collosus instead of stargates
@Movement187 If he pushes out with roachling before you have phoenixes out you just abort the stargate idea, throw down a robo facility, pump out an observer and get a robo bay while warping in some stalkers. If he does a tech switch youll see it with your observer but lets be honest, only air units or ultras will beat your collosi unless you fail at micro'ing. Stalkers will hold a ramp with a sentry or 2 for as long as needed.
i almost always get an evo chamber early with zerg to start with an upgrade, so if i see a phoenix strategy, I just get 2 spore crawlers for each mineral line in addition to a few queens, which puts a stop to that. easy to deal with, then transition to hydras.
Wow, people. No build order is invincible. If you scouted the zerg player rushing to hydras, (Yes, Scout) you probably wouldn't choose to use this build.
@gellycrock personally i do this alot to every race :P it really works wonders as long as the other toss doesnt have too many stalkers or isnt aware that you have phoenixes for the harrass your pretty set hahaha

@EdwardReggae it works best against zerg thought because their anti-air units are way harder to get than the other races (you're gonna have marines/stalkers way before he can get hydras...)
im definitely going to try this build next time. usually i just 4 gate when zerg fast expands but mass lings and spine crawlers just obliterate any zealot stalker force and the zerg player just sits all day and macros a whole bunch of mutas and lings. i'm in diamond league and so far the majority of if the zerg i have faced in the past couple days keep using this build and its freaking annoying honestly. I tried expanding myself but the mobility of speedlings just deny any chance to keep it

@midnightwalker666 Well I think HD went for zealots because he knew that the zerg was going for lings. If he saw roaches instead, I think there is two possible choice: Going for sentries (to block ramp) and stalkers, or void rays. And if there would be too much roaches for either of these strategies, he could have brought back his phoenix and spend all of their energy casting graviton beam on roaches which would be good because stalkers, sentries and VRs can attack air. I could be wrong tho.

@wingwing999 He was spending his gas on phoenixes, and you don't need sentries to block the zerglings. He already had a solid wall. Hydras are the WORST choice when you get phoenix harassed. You want queens, not hydras. If you go 2 hatch hydras after getting phoenix harassed, you will encounter temps and you will lose.
You CAN't win with this !!!!! it's only to haras and you can do it only 1 -2 times in game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then you should make mass gate way units and finish the job ( 4gate way better and faster to do :P and you can expand izi
any suggestions what units should i cast , late game? some zerg opponents were able to survive this phoenix drone harrass. (spores . hydralisks , etc)
@haissemo well if zerg is focused on killing phoenix which is anti-air based, go something that'll wreck that,, like phoenix+sentry.. those ranged units attacking ground and air will do since you already have the phoenix to pick off units. towards the end of the game on this vid, toss had like 8 phoenix, that's 8 hydras being lifted for 10 sec to die. just join with phoenix, they still support a lot from the back besides killing drones and overlords.
Let's suppose you already have... like 6-8 Phoenix, then your opponent builds some spores/turrets. Should you just switch to ground instantly and atacking, or sticking with phoenix as long as you can?
I love this build but every time my opponent rushed with bunch of roaches my front door couldn't hold and they broke it through. Anyhow to stop roaches or hydralisks rush?
I think the reason he didn't do that is because there were five of them. If there had only been one or two, that would have worked, but as it stood he would have just lost his units.
@j18wang If there are multiple queens it isn't worth it. If you have 4-5 phoenixes and there's only a single queen, that's pretty much the only cost-effective queen snipe you can do.
The point of the early Phoenix Rush is to hurt the opponent's economy as much as possible. Why waste time on killing the queens when you can kill 2 or 3 more drones? None of his Phoenixes died so it doesn't seem like he had really any problem.
@sablesoul If he'd killed the queens when and as they came out he would have been able to destroy every single drone from the start. Not only would he have halted production entirely but he wouldn't have had to micromanage the phoenixes so hard in and out of battle. You may say there's no difference but high level zerg players have an uncanny ability to come back from the brink of destruction and take the game when you thought you'd already won.
@Gemquist it would have taken all of 10 seconds to kill those queens. The resulting destruction of every drone would have more than made up for it. Not to mention the zerg player wouldn't have been able to spawn larvae any more unless he spent a bunch of minerals making more queens. That zergling army that infiltrated HD's base would have taken a lot longer to mass up, and by then he probably could have assembled a ground army to clean up.
@velation This is assuming that he had enough firepower to destroy the queens and not have them constantly retaliate. A phoenix or two could've been downed.

It takes about 1-2 secodns to lift and kil a worker and kill overlords dealing HUGE Economic damage forcing the Zerg to waste zerglings to make room for workers and to make queens for Antiair
@j18wang Still if hes going for an eco harassment the 50 eng spent on drones is better spent and he doesnt know if another queen is around to transfuse the queen quickly wasting 50 eng on phoenix. He knows hes going to get more queens as that is the only unit the zerg has to attack air early on. So stopping Drone harvest is giving Nony a economic advantage

@gellycrock personally i do this alot to every race :P it really works wonders as long as the other toss doesnt have too many stalkers or isnt aware that you have phoenixes for the harrass your pretty set hahaha

@EdwardReggae it works best against zerg thought because their anti-air units are way harder to get than the other races (you're gonna have marines/stalkers way before he can get hydras...)

im definitely going to try this build next time. usually i just 4 gate when zerg fast expands but mass lings and spine crawlers just obliterate any zealot stalker force and the zerg player just sits all day and macros a whole bunch of mutas and lings. i'm in diamond league and so far the majority of if the zerg i have faced in the past couple days keep using this build and its freaking annoying honestly. I tried expanding myself but the mobility of speedlings just deny any chance to keep it

if the zerg player rushed with roaches instead of zerglings, the protoss player would have lost. any ideas how to counter this when using the phoenix build?

@midnightwalker666 Well I think HD went for zealots because he knew that the zerg was going for lings. If he saw roaches instead, I think there is two possible choice: Going for sentries (to block ramp) and stalkers, or void rays. And if there would be too much roaches for either of these strategies, he could have brought back his phoenix and spend all of their energy casting graviton beam on roaches which would be good because stalkers, sentries and VRs can attack air. I could be wrong tho.

@wingwing999 toss didn't block front door cuz he had no gas to spare to sentry,
zerg didn't get any hydra cuz he had no mineral to spare, it's mineral that's essential to making hydra than gas,
spore mounts on ground, so if phoenix moves out to another hatchery, what's spore gonna do?
toss, at the heat of the action had more money but as lings attack, he spent those money on zealots,
and burrow may save those drones from dying, but still cuts the money and so what's the point,,

@wingwing999 He was spending his gas on phoenixes, and you don't need sentries to block the zerglings. He already had a solid wall. Hydras are the WORST choice when you get phoenix harassed. You want queens, not hydras. If you go 2 hatch hydras after getting phoenix harassed, you will encounter temps and you will lose.

@haissemo well if zerg is focused on killing phoenix which is anti-air based, go something that'll wreck that,, like phoenix+sentry.. those ranged units attacking ground and air will do since you already have the phoenix to pick off units. towards the end of the game on this vid, toss had like 8 phoenix, that's 8 hydras being lifted for 10 sec to die. just join with phoenix, they still support a lot from the back besides killing drones and overlords.

Let's suppose you already have... like 6-8 Phoenix, then your opponent builds some spores/turrets. Should you just switch to ground instantly and atacking, or sticking with phoenix as long as you can?

@j18wang If there are multiple queens it isn't worth it. If you have 4-5 phoenixes and there's only a single queen, that's pretty much the only cost-effective queen snipe you can do.

The point of the early Phoenix Rush is to hurt the opponent's economy as much as possible. Why waste time on killing the queens when you can kill 2 or 3 more drones? None of his Phoenixes died so it doesn't seem like he had really any problem.

@sablesoul If he'd killed the queens when and as they came out he would have been able to destroy every single drone from the start. Not only would he have halted production entirely but he wouldn't have had to micromanage the phoenixes so hard in and out of battle. You may say there's no difference but high level zerg players have an uncanny ability to come back from the brink of destruction and take the game when you thought you'd already won.

@velation Had he chose to take the queens down, he wouldn't have done enough economy damage in a short enough time.
Losing drones doesn't just mean losing the 50 minerals cost, but also the mineral income.

@Gemquist it would have taken all of 10 seconds to kill those queens. The resulting destruction of every drone would have more than made up for it. Not to mention the zerg player wouldn't have been able to spawn larvae any more unless he spent a bunch of minerals making more queens. That zergling army that infiltrated HD's base would have taken a lot longer to mass up, and by then he probably could have assembled a ground army to clean up.

@j18wang ...No noob the reason hes going for workers is because theres to many queens and they can just ransfuse each other. It takes about 1-2 secodns to lift and kil a worker and kill overlords dealing HUGE Economic damage forcing the Zerg to waste zerglings to make room for workers and to make queens for Antiair

@j18wang Still if hes going for an eco harassment the 50 eng spent on drones is better spent and he doesnt know if another queen is around to transfuse the queen quickly wasting 50 eng on phoenix. He knows hes going to get more queens as that is the only unit the zerg has to attack air early on. So stopping Drone harvest is giving Nony a economic advantage
