Tina had just left Ike. Sonny and Cher had divorced, had their own shows and joined again for this one. This song always seemed like Tina's declaration of independence to me; I think she's singing to Ike, particularly the end, "You're gonna want me baby when I'm not around, but I can take it, I won't look down."

I think Tina's purpose of doing this was to prove that she could do more than just dance and "scream"..... she wanted to be known for more than Ike and Tina, and was trying to be different.....
