  • My brother's best friend's name is George. =D

By the way...it's my last day of school tomorrow.....who thinks I should only speak Greek all day?

  • Could you please increase the volume for your lessons, thank you

  • I'm from Brazil and I really wanna learn greek. It sounds cool :P

  • Great voice and accent. Very clear.

  • @kouklasou81 i am from greece this is how we talk everyday this is our accent

  • In future videos, it would be helpful if you said it at normal speed first and then slowed it way down the 2nd time. Thanks!

  • Can't believe I pronounced it al correctly O_O" ^W^

  • Well done....kiss from Serbia !

  • @biljanaaabg VOLIMO U SERBIJU..

  • It's easy for native speakers of latin languages to pronounce Greek, for sure.

  • May I ask which are all the "double-letters"? If you remember them..would be good to know them. And do you know any rules for which letter to be used when (the letter "i", "g", "o" and "e"? For example you said the letter ω is always used as the last letter in verbs, but I have also seen it in the middle of words - such as in the word ftinoporo (of course, with greek letters that my keyboard doesn't have).

  • Yes, it is.

I'm spanish and pronuntation it's really easy for me.

Kalimera, to onoma mou einai Yorgos :)

In fact, my name is Jordi, but means Yorgos xD

  • @Matthardy500

cool. For spanish people it must be much easier to pronounce Δ and Θ as they are very common in the spanish language

  • its easy for spanish and japanese speakers to pronounce greek !

  • whats yes and no in greek?

and how do you pronounce them??

  • yes=ναι (its pronunced neh)

    no=όχι (its pronunced Ohi)

  • Very well done video. I never imagined greek pronunciation was so easy for spanish speakers as myself.

One thing I can not fully grasp yet is the difference between the gamma sound and double gamma/gamma kappa sound. I know the latter is like the Spanish "g" but i'm not sure if I'm prononcing the single gamma right.

Also, I noticed sometimes the single gamma sounds like in an english "g" as in "george" Thanks for the video! :)

  • The single gamma sounds like "wh" in the english word "what" or in the word "why". The double gamma or gamma kappa sound like "g" in the word "gorilla". The single gamma never sound like "g" as in "george". This sound, i mean "g" as in "george" come always from the difthong "τζ".

  • Evjaristó a lot for the explanation man! I

  • For instance in this video you may notice the subtle pronounciation difference relating to the letter γ between the word 'γυρίσεις' at 1:36 ,and in the word 'αργότερα' in the phrase that follows at 1:40

  • spanish and greek have very similar pronountiation.we both speak very clearly if you know what i mean.

and no the single gamma never sounds like english "g"

the greek letter for "g" George is "τζ"-"TZ"(yes that are 2 letters that makes an other letter that sound like "G" in George).

  • it is easy for spanish speakers because u guys use a lot the "Θ" and "Δ" in your language.English speakers have a difficulty on that

  • You are right.

  • @aggelospanatha But uh.. doesn't "θ" sound exactly like english "th" as in "the, this, they, them".... and like Spain spanish "Z"... in Latin America spanish we don't use that "Z" sound... but we know and it's not hard to pronounce....

Anyway... I LOVE GREEK! lol.. and I'm learning it! =D

At least I can read it.. not quite know what it all means but can read it! :P

  • @oceanborn45 No!The letter that sounds exactly like what you mentioned is "Δ,δ" Δέλτα! "Θήτα" (θ) sounds exaclty as "th" in the words "think" , "thought" "thanks" etc...

    I hope I helped!

  • @aggelospanatha Yeah.. lol sorry.. i meant "doesn't sound the same?" the '?' was missing.. haha =P but yeah i know it sounds the same, ah! I wanna speak greek fluidly already!! but I have to study.. hard!!

  • @latinbeowulf

You should find it easy the sounds are basically the same.

Most spanish people I've met that speek greek have a very subtle accent.

γγ and γκ is the sound of g in (G)recia

γ on its own is sth between y in (y)o and the second g in grie(g)o.

it never is g as in george. you get g when you put τ and ζ next to each other, not a very common sound in greek.

  • thank u soo much for learn us greek thanks again

  • Thx for making these videos!

  • Hi, at 2.13 I cannot hear the φ at the beginning of φθινόπορο. Do also have silent letters in Greek? thank you for the lessons.

  • no there are no silent letters in greek...its pronounced "Fthinoporo" Φθινοπωρο... i heard the φ very clearly...its just a combination of 2 consonants (φθ) and the second one is the one you mostly hear when you talk quickly..

  • no, every letter is spoken, it may be less, but it's spoken. in φθινόπωρο the φ is spelled, like every other letter.:)

  • If you are learning Greek from a textbook by yourself, then these lessons are very helpful because they are spoken clearly, quickly and naturally, so they help to verify your pronunciation of the individual letters as well as gaining familiarity with the intonation of spoken Greek.

  • Nice lessons, very clear

  • good job!

  • I really like your lessons, but please please please slow down, and actually next time could you actually say the phrase after each phrase appears? It's not hard to pause, but it's hard to remember if we said the phrase right the first time around.

  • I think you should have read the phrases a little bit slower. I've understood all the pronounciation rules but I'm having a hard time following you. Don't forget we are not natives. ;)

  • I just started to learn Greek and I know what most phrases mean.

Good to know Ancient Greek. :)

  • I felt crazy! dizzy.... but fun yeah!

  • Hots so marra for me...eh?

  • whaaaaaaaaaaaatttttt I am so lost. and I was even doing the otehr videos x_x

I need some lessons, the words just went through the screen and I was just blank. it looked like just random characters. damn it! I need to learn more! D:<

  • Greek is the most beautiful language !!!!!

  • why is it that most of the vowels (single and combined) sound the same?

how do you know which to use, specifically omega/omicron?

  • Well, that's the big trick! In ancient Greek each of these letters or combinations, had a specific accent or reason of existence. Now you just have to remember which goes where. Especially for ω , it's very helpfull to know that is is always used as the last letter in verbs, πχ πηγαίνω, έχω, δίνω κλπ. Never "ο" there.

  • infact η, υ, ει, οι and υι all sound like ι. ^^ it's called iotacism.

the easiest way to get to know where what should be is to learn basics of Ancient Greek (lol, i know that sounds like much).

  • @ArkimeTyhaen107 i agree with lina. you just learn how to write each word...

  • poli kala ....very helpfull,

  • Thanks very much for these lessons linaaaap1

i am suprised how many words are the same in our language

    GREETINGS FROM MACEDONIA(no politics)

  • Politics or not,if you are from Makedonia, then you are greek, cause it aint any other Macedonia. And dont come in a learning video, writing with capitals letters that you are not Greek but makedonian, sending greetings from Skopje that is makedonia only in your brains.Dont come again with your ass-kissing propaganda. And theres no makedonian languange, you just talking a bulgarian dialect.its almost same

  • beautiful language but it seems hard to distinguish the sounds from each other when spoken.

  • this is hard

  • thank you! =]

  • like ur user name :D

  • thank u

  • but i love greece the nature and ppl may god bless it .the greek ppl is the nation who put the in fact the difference between the truth and the lie between real and imagination between in one word the real scientist revolutionary civilisation start in greece σε αγαπώ Ελλάδα

  • the latins of the antique roma use to say a proverbe in latin ( its a greek not able to be read) but god decide other thing he erase the latin language and greek still alive til now why ? because greek ppl like their language (dificult to write and read ) and thats the beauty of this language cuase the owners like to take time to speak and write NB: i am from MOROCCO

  • Silly queston: to write "; or :" what do you use?

  • Ή or ή.

    η ημέρα ή η νύχτα ; the day or the night ?

    η Μαρία ή η Ελένη ; Mary or Hellen ?

  • I mean to write ";" or ":", sorry, my fault.

  • for your ';' we use just the dot without the comma below it, i cannot write it right now because my keyboard doesnt have it, and your ':' is the same to ours, but i am not sure about what you mean... can you give me an example of ':' in order to confirm it??

  • i bet this has been said a million times before but whatever xD

its a great lesson and i am learning but you read it way too fast for a beginner. i cant hear whay you says so i cant hear if i said it right myself :(

  • καλη δουλεια παιδια

  • It sometimes sounds like finnish!

  • no vanya0785!the Greek language from the Spanish language are very different!the Greek language sounds like Italian language!e.g:we say:makaronia and they say makaroni!

  • I think Greek language sounds sometimes like Spanish language, but Spanish from Spain, not Latin American Spanish.

  • I totally agree with you, I am cuban, and once there was this show on tv in greek, but I was in the different room, and I totally thought it was TVE (Television Española Internacional) when i started hearing more clear i realized it was greek, glad I´m not the alone, lol
