• If you like Nellie, make sure yo check her out LIVE in NYC on Thanksgiving weekend at the Hiro Ballroom!

  • Awesome comedian/singer, I enjoyed her Ted talks lol. Played te younger sister in P.S. I Love You

  • she was so much better than green day and robby williams together

  • Some of you seem to be missing the subversive lyrics and dripping irony that go with the deceptively bright and cheerful melodies. She's smarter than you think.

  • this song makes me cry everytime i hear it. It reminds me of when I was in High school and my parents wouldn't accept that I was gay. they thought homosexuality was a sickness so they sent me to psychiatrist after psychiatrist, but nothing could "cure" me. (men in white) Eventually they gave up and labeled me their demon child who belonged to satan (men in red). Eventually I tried to commit suicide, (men in black). However, I lived. I'm out. and being gay is the best decision of my life.

  • @LivefromtheCHF Wow. You're brave :)

  • i found here searching for Mika, but yes, off course to be a girl she is talented :)

  • I absolutely LOVE her voice. Not too bad on the eyes either :d

  • Heel mooi

  • We once saw her by a port-o-san at South Street Seaport in NYC. She put on a concert that night -- was like a young Bob Dylan.

  • she is my 2 cousin bealive it or not

  • This woman is brilliant! I have just discovered her tonight - so pleased I have, absolutely amazing. So light and cheerful, I want to jump to my feet and leap about!

  • I met her briefly, she is great. Very nice and amazing unique!

  • Lucky! :) Maybe I will too one day. What was she like?

  • I just felt in love with her music. I first heard it on the plane radio station.. jotted her name on napkin and bought her CD almost few days later. Enjoyed ever since.

  • A friend just gave me a cd of hers, and now I'm off to see if she's (Nelly) made any more. :)

  • She kind of reminds me of naomi watts. Great artist!

  • An immense talent, this is Nellie McKay.

  • Does she EVER play with a band backing her?

  • She has a major makeover on this show, i think.

I don't normally see her all fancied, hair and makeup all done nice.

I don't know if that was the studio or what, but I thought she was a pretty girl before! but... wow!

I love this song too, it's awesomeness.

  • If you get to know her performances, you'll realize that her coy, innocent demeanor belies a wickedly clever social satirist. The elegant dresses and fluffy retro hair serve as a counterpoint to her hardcore activist ideologies. She's surprisingly intelligent and I don't doubt that when she sings out of range, it is intentional. Sometimes she slips in different accents, too. (plagiarized, c/o Lauren Cooper on TED)

  • This girl is the next Rosemary Clooney..Nellie we love your voice!!!And shes gorgeous!!

  • I don't understand the line about "chop your head off". Someone please explain that to me. I'm ssuming it has something to do with eliminating worry by getting rid of worrying thoughts, figuritively speaking. But, not sure.

I love all the rest of the song. It's just that one linbe that gets me! Trigers my imagination, in a scary sense (*_*)

  • its sounds like "Chop your head off, but im pretty sure its "drop ur head off" but yah that sorta makes sense, saying how random and strange that song is, though i am so obsessed with it

  • Ya know, maybe you're right. It's possble she actually is saying "drop..." hard to tell, but, yeah, i'd much rather think of it the way you do (^_^)

But, yeah, i love it too!

  • she's saying "chop your head off"

that's what it says in her lyrics.

this is such an odd song...but i like it. =).

  • she says chop your head off, be a lighter person. get it? you'd literally be a lighter person... without your head... :)

  • heh lol i get it dats kinda funnayy

  • It is like this... once you head is chopped off you feel lighter...literally.

  • some douche dropped a bottle or something in the background

  • a class all her own!

  • this gal is simply AMAZING.

  • she always knows exactly what to wear...haha. good stuff

  • comparisons with Joni Mitchell are inevitable. comparisons are odious - i say they're both geniuses. love u nell!

  • The more accurate comparison would probably be Tori Amos. But one could say Cyndi Lauper, as well.

    Hell, they're all geniuses!

  • I get the Tori Amos, not so much Cyndi.

  • simply beautiful.

  • Watching this clip live was he first time I heard Nellie McKay. She has written lots of great songs and if you like this you should definitely buy her albums. Thanks Jools!

  • Ok, one more time, since ignorance seems to be a learned(in your case)commodity. The use of "you're" was obvious word play hence the(")dummy. In other words"you're"house ="you are" you, thusly take a look at yourself(mirror). In my opinion you should take heed in your own advice and get out of mommy and daddy's house where you produce these horrible hack cover songs as video lament and attention(cry for help). You will find your little dreamworld is only faced, you can't trompe le monde silly.

  • so using the wrong word with your "word play" in the wrong context is supposed to make you look witty? why are you calling me the dummy?

"In other words"you're"house ="you are" you, thusly take a look at yourself(mirror)"

please explain how that makes any sense. you are house? it's not even clever, it's just babble.

don't preach about other people's ignorance when you didn't even take the time to realise that nellie mckay isn't solely a pianist.

  • nothing personal...but i am a little sick a girls

and pianos. Not so original, and as lyrically bankrupt as "gavin r."from "bush"...i wish there where more guitar wielding women out there that got as much attention and mattered.

  • well, she plays the ukulele as well :/

  • uuuummmm? no that still doesn't help me/her..but thanks for trying...uuummmm? "smallpenis1" your screen name amuses me more than this vid..

    ~d

  • i wasn't trying to help you, and yes, i am amusing.

  • ok...well congratulations, too bad though because you have helped me...and turns out your not amusing what so ever...good luck with that;}

  • you just contradicted yourself. you said i didn't help you, and now you say i have.

    it's "you're", not "your".

i don't have a problem about failing to amuse you, because you're daft.

  • here let me hand feed you my grammatically correct friend, in context:

1)you have helped me realize "you're" not amusing.("smallpenis,"b.t.w.not daft at all).

There see that wasn't hard was it? I'm sure everybody that doesn't agree(or is not amused) with you is foolish and stupid, you do have a mirror in "you're" house don't you?

  • i'm also sure that everyone who doesn't agree with me isn't foolish or stupid. you, however, are. "mirror in you're house" does not make sense, because "your" is possessive and "you're" means "you are". so, nice try at trying to pay me out, but you've failed miserably every time. next time you "hand feed" someone, do it with a little common sense.

  • reply

  • "you do have a mirror in "you're" house don't you? "

    XFD

  • such an interesting person. wonderful.

  • in love with this....

  • cute medley

  • This song's great.

  • ding ding dong! :)

  • there the doorbell hello man in black

  • hello pfaff is ORange!!

  • what's that suppose to mean? hu h

  • don't you know what that means?? ORANGE!

  • is that something between you and that joe kid?

  • ah i love this song

  • Terrific! Chop your head off!

  • cool song

  • She's just so interesting - I can't think of any other way to say it. Her music is incredibly unique and weird in the awesomest way. She's very pretty too!

  • This is my favorite of Nellie Mckay! It's so catchy, with incredible lyrics...you can't go wrong!

  • i love her she is so diffrent i cant get over it!

  • ohh... my ding dong ding!

  • teehee. its hard to make a song about death so hilarios

  • OOOOOOO YOU TOUCHED MY TRALALA!!!!

  • I wunt be dinied... I'm leu-king fur sum luuuve!

  • what show is this???

  • Its:

    Later with Jools Holland.

    Pretty awesome show.

  • she's like a Kate Bush for another generation

  • Really? Kate Bush?! (the exclamation point points to incredulousness)

  • young, talented, beautiful, quirky songs with heady lyrics... yes

  • Well no she isn't Kate Bush was really not a good singer and had some crazy videos and the stuff Kate Bush was singing about was really different.

If you are right than my generation is incredible diffrent to the Kate Bush one.

  • she is more of a Suzanne Vega.

  • i never knew suicide could sound so sweet. this gives me the chills.

  • she looks like an angel.

    she sings like an angel.

    oh yes....she's an angel!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes, she's an angel, sent from above, to teach us all again how to love. Ahhhh.

  • It's rare when you see someone who lives the music. What I mean by that is, when you see her play/sing it's impossible to think that she's anywhere but in the song. If she's thinking of anything at all during performance, she's great at not showing it. It's got to be a natural gift to *be* the performance.

  • SHE IS SOOO AMAZING! I just heard about her recently, and now, I've memorized allll her songs and sing them constantly! she's just so different! I love it! Nora Jones is really good too.

  • its obviously about a cat. why else would she say "did i tell you my cat died" in part of the song?

  • It's about suicide.

  • she looks really pretty. and she's a good musician.

  • She is amazing. Forget Avril lavigne and all these other pop no talent whores... Nellie is the real deal. She should be all over the radio and tv. Her talent is real.

  • Lol, Avril Lavinge??? How dare you? the mere comparasion ofends this girl's name, she's great!

  • hah I was just giving an example of a singer who has no talent and shouldnt be so damn popular.

  • This is the sexiest woman who ever lived. She has the talent, that silky and capable voice and a great sense of humour. I wish I was young enough to fall in love with Nellie.

  • I think we are all in love with her in our own way, regardless of age/gender. She's is refreshingly gifted.

  • hm, she realy seems "smarter than you think" :> i'm impressed.

  • I love Nellie Mckay

  • Woew, I had no idea she'd ever been on Jools! She's pretty unknown over here in England, but I'm impressed!

  • Nellie Mckay is fantastic, she still seems incredibly underrated, this song is fantastic. Jools gets some amazing artists on :-)x

  • i remember seeing this a few years ago and its the first time i saw nellie! thanks jools :)

  • nelly would win ..she would acept this ..and carry on..thanks for post

  • I'd love to see her and Billy Joel have a piano face-off. Who would win? The "Piano Man" or this very talented young lady?

  • BTW, I'm a huge fan of Billy Joel, just to make sure people here didn't think otherwise.

  • she is so talented... There's no way of even describing her.. just so absolutely great!

  • i love this song so much

  • Does your reference to the different color men refer to the different stages of meditation, referencing colors?

  • man in white is a doctor. man in red is a psychologist. man in black is death.

  • exactly what i was thinking

  • ah! "man in red.../...get you into bed"?

  • Men in white, MAN in red and man in black. I thought the man in red was the "seductionist." "He'll get you into bed," and "maybe that smooth jet-setter lied." She escapes her pain through drug, sex, then death!!

  • you are very dumb

  • Man its fiction. Nothing autobiographical, so maybe you should learn what a song is first and realize that you are a bit ignorant.

  • did i say the stuff in the song was true? of course know that she isnt a boozer or on drugs. Don't u think i would have noticed if she looked like she was on drugs? or if she was dead? and who's to say every song is always fictional? How bout I look up 'song' in the dictionary, will I find the word fictional anywhere in the context? I love this song, and nellie mckay, they are of course both the best. I was just stating a fact about the song, my point of view. And im not trying to fight here.

  • For those that have asked, it was performed on Later With Jools Holland which is shown on BBC2 in the UK. Jools manages to pick out some amazing artists that are virtually unknown in the UK who make you go WOW!. This was one of those moments. Thanks for posting it. Search for Seasick Steve to see another amzing performance on Jools' programme.

  • awesome performance

  • this is the version on ondemand i watched this morning!

  • Good song here. Queen also has a song about the death of a cat called "All Dead All Dead". Great song, although it's actually better if you listen to it NOT knowing it's just about a cat, but oh well.

  • Actually, it's about suicide.

  • No it's not. Brian May himself said it was about a stray cat in an interview.

  • Nellie McKay wrote "Ding Dong", sir, and when she opened for BNL and Alanis Morrissette a couple years ago she prefaced this song with "This is a cheery little ditty about suicide."

  • I thought you were talking about the Queen song. And the blatant lyrics about cat death in this song are what I was referring to.

  • Oh. Ah. What a crazy sitcom-style mix-up!

    womp womp wooomp

  • I love her.

  • I loved this song before, but the live version only enhances my adoration.

  • What network was this shown on?

  • this song really makes me want to like the taste of gin

  • One of the most cheerily depressing songs I have ever heard.

I remember seeing this on TV and falling in love with the song. But sadly it remains one of the only Nelly Mckay songs I can stomach

  • beautiful song, i like live much more

  • I've no clue why but this song of hers always makes me wanna cry - I know, I'm weird

  • It's because her cat died! :(

  • The more I am exposed to Nellie the more I appreciate her talents. I admit that sometimes I think she is screwing with my mind. But if I could choose any one to screw with my mind it is definately Nellie.

  • Is she that sweet? Or is she diabolical? Both, thinks I.

  • HER CAT DIED. :(

  • god she is amazing she I can consider my idol!

  • brilliant, beautiful, love love love-thank you!!

  • ...I think that the live version is far better than the original! Oh, in so much love, this song is gorgeous. ♥
