Ann Hui has a track record of being an observer of social issues (in particular portraying immigration from Vietnam in movies like STORY OF WOO VIET and BOAT PEOPLE) and even one of her BELOW THE LION ROCK episode was based on a true story so she at times tries to strip her movies of flash to capture that reality.
THE WAY WE ARE was a very close example of how you could almost deceive an audience into thinking it's a documentary.
The whole concept of captureing reality on camera is an interesting one.I'd love to see this film to see what kind of techniques are used to make you feel that.
I'm studying 'Mondo' films at the moment, a very different kind of reality movie making
Essentially what Hui does is to cut back to scenes in the police station where they are filming the interrogation of the neighbour, relatives and one of the women from the shelter. It's not highly original but makes sense for the movie.
I enjoyed the movie and Simon never fails to impress me. But please tell me the dog killing scene was not real.
