I am half japanese (my japanese got really rusty, but i still can read some characters)

No clue why they said that ingame, but the writings on the artwork say:

八岐 = Yamata (not sure how to translate this in english. i'd say "split up in eight", or "eight branched"), の = no (particle of possession), 大蛇 = Orochi (big/giant/huge snake )

Not sure if this helps, i'm not good in explaining things in english.

Maybe there is an older or different way to write "Yamata no Orochi".

I almost know the entire story of Yamata no Orochi, Okami changes a few things but it's still based of the real story itself. I love this battle theme :) oh and by the guys, many anime's base their characters off of awesome mythology, thus the guy from Naruto, so dont blame anyone ok? Naruto knew a great mythology and honored it by giving a character the name.

hey little tip: when you can attack Orochi's heads just keep dumping sake and fire on his heads most heads take some real seirious damage from that. Trust me this works but its best to use and inkfinity stone.Hope this helps =]

@hesteaeble Yep, Shiranui and Nagi both defeated Orochi 100 years before Okami takes place; however, Shiranui dies in the process. 100 years later, Shiranui is brought back as Okami Amaterasu (which mostly everyone affectionately calls Ammy) to do the exact same thing AGAIN and then some.
