DAMN! that has to be the best i have ever heard this song! i tried playing a Glenn Miller medly once, (similar to Big Band Classics) and this was one of the songs, needless to say we butchered it and never took ti to concert:( but this is cooking!
Wow this came up on the home page and, i was like WOW cause I i had an esbembly and they had elder pppl and they played this song and now I think i really like it.
I saw them here in Reutlingen, Germany about two or three years ago, directed by Wil Salden. They did a real great job and the whole audience was fascinated, within me. Great great- gotta love them charming guys :D
Pennsylvania 6-5000 was inspired by the telephone number of the Pennsylvania Hotel in NY, NY, where many of the great Big Bands played in the 30s and 40s.
It is, btw, the oldest continuing phone number known, having been the number for the Pennsylvania Hotel since 1919.
37 year old geezer here. Love Glenn Miller, big band, sinatra, etc. Thanks for posting this. I grew up in PA too and love to visit the old towns these guys were from. Thanks!
Yes, as others have posted, it is still the phone number for the Hotel Pennsylvania, but it has been reduced to an all-numeric number.
The hotel was built by the then-mighty Pennsylvania Railroad, just across from their once-majestic Pennsylvania Station (which was razed in 1964 to build Madison Square Garden).
Pennsylvania Station was mentioned in the Glenn Miller song, "Chattanooga Choo-Choo".
We listened to this song in my band class, since we're playing this for our 2nd concert for this year. We even have a little machine that makes the ringing sound. I love the trumpet part too, but sadly, there will be no solos in our band. I wish there was, since I'm a trumpet...
then you are greately disempowering yourself. not saying this music is bad - it's devine, but even though the musical world is progressively getting worse, there are some little treasures out there :)
I know. There's only about...two other people at my school (over 1000 students) that like this type of stuff. The majority of the kids don't even listen to what you could classify as music.
our school jazz band is playing this song, i think we sound good, but not as good as this! and the trumpet solo, i dont do it, but one of the others in first trumpet are doing it, because they are better. (i really do play trumpet)
I grew up with a musical father who listened to and was aristically influenced by the big band sound of Glenn Miller and others. Mr. Miller will forever remain in the fondest of my childhood memories. :)
May I please throw in a comment now? This is splendid! Thank you so much! Bruno Leicht is a Troll!!. It is shameful that this beautiful site is spoiled with such shocking comments. But I am afraid the uploader does not know about Bruno Leicht being a Troll, isn't it?
I've been a glenn miller fan since i was 12 and first heard my school big band play American Patrol. Such a shame he died before his time, how many other classic Big Band pieces would he have written?
Fantastic - I used to play trumpet in a big band called The Millstones. Glenn Miller has a special place in my heart - so many memories from Germany, France and around the south coast. I went to see the GMO when I was about 15 or 16.
omg i'm 13 i play the trumpet nd went to the glenn miller orchestra on da 18th april 07 and it was mazin gt loads ov sigatures and ray mcvays hes so nice x
Christina Aguilera???? when i heard u lijed jazz i thougt u were intelligent or at least kind of. christina aguillera is just as bad as britney spears, shakira and all that stupid rappers. thats not musik what they make its just a copy and a fake. its claiming credit for something someone else did.
hey neat to see young people into this, well I'm 26 and I was raised on it too. I got to see the orch. under Larry obrien several times where I live, hope you get to as well, words can't describe the experience!!!
And I'm the second 15 year old.I love almost all the songs of glenn miller. With my 2 favorites moonlight serenade and Chattanooga Choo Choo. I just love the music from those times. I've been raised with it. And I love Christina Aguilera because she gives the songs that little more extra. I mean her new album Back To Basics. I just love it. And I love Frank Sinatra. I love them all.. ;-)
What does Christina Aguilera have to do with Glenn Miller??? C.A. is from the electronic pop era. Glenn Miller from the 30's 40's. Miller crashed over the British Channal during the 2nd world war. Played for the american an british troops while v1's were flying over. I think it's not realistic to say C.A. adds something special to Millers music. Except perhaps something very plastic and fake.
The GMO still plays almost every night of every week. Talk about longevity! Bob Rummage, the drummer on these vidoes, plays with my big band in Chicago whenever I can get him. Long live this music.

When the song came out, the phone co. probably bent over backwards to keep the number, doncha think?

Although with today's all-numeric phone numbers, that historic phone number has been reduced to the simple 212-736-5000.

Well, in our band it went Pennsylvanya sixty five! (conductor voice solo)
