@papertowelzftw123 Haha yeah the speech was, but i think he did mean the cymbal hit, unless he put the wrong time, but yeah tapping a cymbal?? Why even acknowledge that
@italiarovinata i beg to differ man... there is a thing such as independence in terms of drumming it just means you could play and given beat on any given limb on any given time with out loosing "coordination"...
but they work hand in hand... so what you said is still half true :)
first of all his drums sound not that bad on good mikes and second of all this is just a beginner lesson so you cant be saying anything about his teaching.
well he did open the hi hat on the last beat, so he did use every limb on his body. and if you knew anything about drum mics then you would understand why his entire kit sounded like that. get over it.
He opened it ONCE in the entire video, he didnt do it on the last beat(there are 4 beats in a bar in what hes playing), he did it once.
If thats how you consider things, you would also be playing the and notes, because he did that two times in the video. and yes i know quite a bit about drum mics, it is not the mics making the drums sound like that, its the tuning.
I would be fine with this video if he lived up to his word
The fact that he's keeping the hi hat closed is a function of the left foot when used on the hi hat. Keeping it closed is just as important as opening it. However, he does open it. And it is an intro video for beginners. And gospel and jazz drummers like ring in their snares. And Mike Johnston is an awesome teacher as well. And whose being stupid? A consensus would be you.
I think you just want to show off what little bit of drumming 'theory' you have, eh eh eh? Nyak nyak. As I keep saying, we're not paying these guys, so stop moooaaaning little boy. Bad words don't make a boy a man. Mwa hwa hwa.
Great video, nice cymbals but terrrrrrrrrrible bass/snare drum.. i like the video, you get a 5/5 but buy a new snare or tune it better... and ur bass is muffled by holding your foot, also putting say a sleeping bag in it makes the bass sound more deep (But it is louder..) which helps
Gospel and jazz influenced drummers appreciate ring in there snare and kick. I understand why he likes ring. But I'm like you, I appreciate less ring. To each his own. Also, keeping his foot on the kick is effectively doing the same thing your sleeping bag would do. Muffle. It doesn't change the pitch, just eliminates ring.
alot of drummers do that...it's a matter of preference. Sure, you get a more overtoned sound by not sinking the beater...but a punch is quick...lay right into it. This lesson is ridic...shit is too basic
I love this guy, he explains it without all of the complicated cunfusing stuff. Ive been trying to find someone on youtube that will just show me diffrent stuff.
well if you listen to what he is saying and you understand his concept and do it yourself. dont down him for trying to put down the basics for beginers
even if everyone plays the same beat, it doesn't sound exactly the same. it depends on the accent, the feel, and the way you carry that particular beat.
How come you are "duhing" the video. He did this for individuals that is totally just learning...people that ain't got that natural rhythm. This is fundamentals for specific individuals. Kudos!
are these vids for beginners because I already know this stuff

its a basic fucking rock beat, stop being stupid.
and NO your NOT using every limb your body, your "left" foot,(on the hats or other kick pedal) should come in if your using every limb, not just 3.
your a fucking stupid teacher, and you need to learn how to tune, because your stuff sounds like shit.
if you want a real drum lesson go to drumteacher76's youtube channel.

I don't think the sound your hearing from the drums is from the mics. I'm pretty sure they'd sound a lot better if that was the case.
You'll notice the guy doesn't have a mic near his mouth (not even one of those cheesy Madonna style mics)
So surely the sound is just picked up with an on camera or single boom mic source.
The guys doing a good thing showing people these boring basics of drumming.
