  • SOUL POWER . absolutely a masterpiece! VIVA!

  • The good old days where the singers really got good voices.

  • marvin and gladys are good the slits are great

  • she puts marvin gaye in the shade. What a rocker. And what a cutie pie too. pips moves are flawless too. Read her biography. She is a beautiful person inside too. And yes, she came out with "grapevine" about 6 months before Marvin Gaye

  • contrary to popular opinion Gladys did this first. T

  • The only other artist that comes to mind who sang with such ease was Andy Williams...I know they are totally different singers...Gladys voice is just amazing...

  • The best version!!

  • Amazing! You can NOT top this! Comparing this to Marvin's or CCR's version is like comparing rubies, emeralds and diamonds, but this is my favorite. People living centuries in the future will be moved by this performance. Thank you for posting this musical gem. Incredible!

  • I am very much attracted to the woman in this video.

  • They own this, with all due respect to MPG. The Pips had some of the smoothest moves in the business. Thanks.

  • Gladys was too cute !

  • 22 PEOPLE DIDNT HEAR IT THRU THE GRAPEVINE......

  • @tutti1331 more like 22 people DID hear it through the grapevine.

  • She was so young and so cute!!

  • she kinda looks like kelly rowland here i mean kelly rowland looks like her :)

  • Man she's sexy!

  • Wow what a voice

  • I LOVE GLADYS! HELLO FROM RUSSIA!

  • WOW! Kelly Rowland looks just like Gladys. Won't it be great if Hollywood came up with a movie about the life of Gladys Knight and the Pips, Kelly Rowland playing Gladys!!!! I think it wud be great, Strong resemblance here, very much.......

  • Wait a minute, 22 people disliked this? Oh sorry, that's not 22 people, that's 22 complete morons.

  • Agreed, wingtipvortex. Both are nothing less than brilliant. But, please don't forget or discount Marvin Gaye.

  • beyond amazing

  • It's wierd, but when the camera closed in on Gladys, for some odd reason, I was thinking of SNSD's Hyoyeon... :/

  • AFROOOSS =D

  • Goddamn this amazing... So Vintage. GAWD.

  • I have always been in love with Gladys Knight and I still am...LOL

  • 1. CCR 2. MARVIN 3. GLADYS

  • SO. MANY. AFROS!!!!

  • marvins version could never match this funk. you go girl.

  • CCR version best ever !! Although I did like Gladys Knight version alot.. I remember read a Rolling Stone article... "The extended 6+ minuteversion of I heard it Through the Grapevine, was better than any 6 minutes of Grateful Dead music on record" ... "Nuff said...

  • Gladys is so gorgeous

  • Check out Amy Winehouse's version of this oldie but goodie. I like it better than all the other versions.

  • No weaves ladies. Hers was the real deal!

  • @blueforyou2 Sorry to tell you but Gladys has long hair but back then she used to get weaves, Yes they were around then but not any where as popular as they are today.I remember doing them back as far as 1968, it was pole weaving at that time. you know the deal the longer your real hair is, at least at the front and sides the better that the weave blends. and at that time everybodys had edges and sides because relaxers and braids hadnt taken them out at that time yet.

  • @darkebony Glad you enlightened me. Thanks.

  • Yes!!!!!! This may very well be the best version of this great tune. Also, check out Amy Winehouse doin' this cut!

  • I LOVE MOTOWN!

  • is that a lace front?

  • Please give a thumbs up if you watched this more than 3 times consecutively........

  • I WISH SOUL TRAIN COULD COME BACK

  • Kelly Rowland looks like Gladys Knight when she was young

  • @321jacque i was thinking that !

    both Beautiful.

  • This version is so cooool !

  • Dat bassline...

  • she is great!!!!! and so are the backups!!!! cool vid wish we had more of this in this day;)

  • strange thing is her version is the most kick ass.even more than OTIS

  • God, she's cute!

  • i think she's a beautiful young lady

  • She makes it seem so effortless.. love it.

  • Dang.....look at all those afros! ;)

  • the youngest I have ever seen Gladys performing. Priceless video. thanks.also

@wingtipvortex What no love for Marvin??? hey It's your call your video . So here is me backin off ......reluctantly lol

    old guy

  • @5871248 LOL. Don't mind Marvins version, just not as much as this and Creedence. :)

  • @wingtipvortex How 'bout Smokey??

  • @5871248 But.... Marvins was a cover of this....

  • @zxssded No it wasn't. Marvin recorded his version before Gladys recorded this one, although this version was released first. But both were covers. The original version was recorded by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Do your homework.

  • This the song

  • I like this and I'm a white guy. The funk just moves me so good. it makes a white guy have rhythm. well not quite

  • wow so young. I,d forgotten,

  • A #1 hit for Gladys Knight and The Pips on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 167th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. Well, we say goodbye to 1967 and head into 1968. And R&B music was hot. You felt something with every song. Sadly, you don't feel that today.

  • @mkl62 Hey don't give up so easily. If you look for old style, soulful stuff, you'll find it today.

Search for Liquid Soul. That's some great stuff, and there's a lot more.

  • @willievega Thanks for the reply. I'm going through all the top hits on the Rhythm & Blues charts, Country & Western charts, Adult Contemporary charts, and the Top 5 on the Top 40 charts.

  • @mkl62 You'll find some cool stuff. It's just that here in the states they only promote the flavor of the week.

  • Good day

She was one of the BEST singers in her day...up with Karen Carpenter,..Barbara Streisand..

I can't sit still when the radio plays this old Soul music..

I also like 4 Tops Temptations etc..

  • Dam she is too cute really compleate package and loyal to the pips even though she could have dumped them long ago peace

  • there's just something about this song that only Marvin Gaye can give

  • fantastic ...

  • the next like will be the 1000th

  • She had to be one of the cuties girls ever. Love the overbite and her voice.

  • License to Kill!

  • Gladys Knight and the Pips made really good music!!! May God bless you.

  • what kind of weave she got in her haed? that is BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • Even the white guy has a black mans afro! @00:48 - 00:54 So real! =O

  • And fully clothed! A real Diva doesn't need to where a body suit to attract attention to her talent. If you can sing, SING! You shouldn't have to be half naked to do it! Loving the plaid jacket and bell bottoms! (And the baby hair, soo cute!)

  • @satindol69 Yes....preach....im sick of this young singers taking all their clothes off!!

  • She was pretty darn cute, and that voice is outta sight.

  • i prefer this to Gaye's original.

The afro is a classic look that should never be out of style.

  • Does anyone know what Marvin Gaye thought about this version of his song? I think it's quite different. More of a angry tune. Marvins has more of a sad tune, more soulful.

  • @VERB65 Gladys & The Pips version predates Marvins

  • @1mpablo Actually, it depends on whether you're talking about the release or the recording. Gladys recorded her version after Marvin, but Marvin waited well over a year to release his, while Gladys released hers within a few months of recording it.

  • haha.... those were some days!

  • Great music never dies! This song is 45 years old, and it STILL kicks ass!! :)

  • @sactiger I'm 46 and I KICK MORE ASS THAN EVER.

    PEACE

  • Gladys was soo and still is terribly gorgeous!!!Beautiful woman!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How many songs can be a hit three years in a row.

!967 Gladys Knight and the Pips.

    !968 Marin Gaye

    1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival

  • i heard that, the great mr james jamerson the motown sound song on BASS!

  • Once upon a time something called Music.....

  • What a wondeful voice!This is what I called singing! 8-)

  • Great Motown songs of my youth! And listen to James Jamerson on BASS!!!

  • 17 people are deaf so they couldn't hear thru the grapevine

  • was this 1968 or 1969?

  • You must be out of your fuckin' mind, for disliking this..

  • @torbenliennielsen Yeaah, well said! You can say that again! One should have to be totally deaf or soulless for not be enthusiastic about this video!Waddaeff!

  • Her version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" was recorded in 1967. Born in 1944 she would have been about 23 years old. Started at the age of 7 and now 66 years. So she has been performing nearly 60 years. What a talent !!

  • Kelly Rowland

  • @Pacificblueboy Are you that Kelly Rowland

  • @pictureisup1 If I was, I wouldn't be sitting here writing comments on youtube...

  • @Pacificblueboy then again, you never know

  • Gladys, CCR and Marvin all have equally good versions of this song. They each fit a different mood and a different listener. This is one of few songs where three different artists can do the song justice in their own way.

  • grew up listening to gladys knight and the pips

  • Friday got me here...

  • marvin's gaye version is excellent, but this version has more passion. The Pips know how to bring it!

  • Gladys made the definitive version!!! No one will ever top this!!! Not even my beloved Chaka!!!

  • sorry marvin, this is the best version of i heard it through the grapevine....

berry gordy always encouraged motown acts to records different version of

    the same song....

  • Wish there was afros today instead of these corn rows.Love watching these groups growing up in the 70s on Soul Train

  • i love the guy who comes through at 1:00, what a legend!

  • Released October 30, 1968

  • another great bassline from the funkiest of the funk brothers........JAMERSON LIVES

  • She was mega hot, smiled, and could sing. I think the girls today don't smile enough.

  • @bb1134 i second ur sentiment

  • This is back in the day when you actually had to have tallent to sing!

  • @LouisvillePride I second that sentiment!!

  • that was when music was fun and about pure talent beyonce aint got shit on gladys!!

  • This version is the best as far as I'm concerned. She kills it.....and, she was so cute here too.

  • i love watching all the cool dance moves.

  • Only a fool would hate this great tune.

  • thx to who ever shared this... good times..wooo

  • is it me or does anybody else recognize that beautiful long natural hair

  • @Lifetimepanther1944 Um i dont think all of dat is natural hair cuz back then weaves started to be popular back then nd afro spray:)

  • @XxXShAwTyBoOXxX WOW .. if that is weave man its looks a lot better then what the chicks nowadays are rockin LOL ....... but I agree , because I remember reading that weave became very popular in the 70s after being introduced in the 60s . Who would've thought it existed back then? but i just thought it was all natural since her autobiography mentioned her father being half Cherokee if that is weave I must say it looks a lot better than the kind u see today IDK

  • @Lifetimepanther1944 That's all her real hair. the look girls today are trying to achieve.

  • so this is a happy song?! WTF..

  • She looks so young this this video! Beautiful voice. Terrible clothes 70s no doubt. Dancing - but the guy on the right in the video has got just a little too much groove! Showing off no doubt.

  • One of the prettiest and most talented ladies of all time!

  • Her baby hair was on point. LOL. gorgeous.

  • The Funk Brothers...enough said. Can't stop dancin while listening to this masterpiece. Not to mention Jamerson's fantastic bassline

  • Yea, this is the original. I haven't really come across a version of this song that I don't like, unless Bieber has a version, I don't know.

  • Anyone here notice with the only exception being skincolor Gladys Knight lookslike Carnie Wilson?

  • @coolsweetgroovy Uhm..I think you need to get your eyes checked....and SOON!

  • @titusact4scene2 No I don't Gladys Knight and The Pips did it in 1967 Marvin Gaye did it in 1968

  • Why have all the people dancing got he same hair, and I won't mention the wig Gladys has one.

Her lip sync is excellent though, annd she looks great.

I enjoy seeing soul singers perform, but feel the real magic is done at the actual recordings. How can singers perform really sad, bluesy songs, when they are on stage and feeling good. Most soul music is pretty much sad stuff on the whole, apart from material aimed at the dance market

  • OMG! So easy! This is the real deal baby!

  • Watch Gladys' shoulders keep the rhythm between 38 and 45 seconds "Not much longer would you be mine". Awesome!

  • "Love this tune to bits! Creedence version is brilliant, this one is double brilliant!!" If you want triple brilliant, try the original by Marvin Gaye.

  • @changing3 This is the orginal Marvin Gaye covered it you need to do your research better

  • monkies

  • All the naturals..and her hair was sooo cute.

  • LMAO Afro Town!

  • the way there dancing in this vid looks like what kids do now a days....... shuffling

  • those afros are sick

  • @SwissChi

Get real, at least their hair is real

You may be sick, a racist, or just delusional. I'm in my fifties, and my black freinds of the same age are reverting back to afros, easier maintenance and they just dont' give a damn what society thinks.

  • @ListeningforGod - I think that the original comment was meant to say that the afros were "sick", in a good way. I think that you should wear your hair however you'd like, because the only one that can judge you is God. May he bless us all. Have a wonderful day!

  • @kidlokvideos people are get upset to easy today. If there a sexual comment, then it would okay. Afros were sick was a good way.

  • Look at those afros rocking to the beat--classic!

  • There was alot of REAL HAIR in that room LOL !!! ;-)

  • @MiStArEdX bring real hair back! haha :)

  • @MiStArEdX lol so true!

  • There was alot of REAL hair in that room !! ;-)

  • On The Bay Areas Soul Train???Where was I?

  • Amazing! :-) Though... Am I the only one who thinks it's a bit scary that there's not a single white person dancing around there, though? Wasn't the Great American Public ready for mixed race entertainment yet? :-o

  • FUNNY !!!

  • This song was their first big hit after struggling soo many years to get their first big hit. But a year later Marvin Gaye recorded a cover version of this song, and it was even a bigger hit than Gladys Knight and the Pips version. Although Marvin deserved all of the success that he got, it was soo wrong for Berry to let Marvin overshadow the hit song that Gladys Knight and The Pips had been waiting soo long for. They were happy for Marvin but it hurt them somewhat as Gladys stated in her book.

  • @tommiexander You have your facts wrong. Gladys Knight was the one doing the covering of the song. Marvin Gaye recorded his version of the song prior to the Pips' but released it after theirs. Smokey Robinson was the first to record the song and that was over 2 years before Gladys Knight did her version.

  • @kuztoml65

I see that you got on the Internet to look this up. The public didn't know anything about who recorded the song first, so that didn't matter. The point I'm making is Gladys Knight and The Pips were the first to release the song to the public and it was their first big hit that they had been working so hard for. And for Berry to release Marvin Gaye's version a year later wasn't fair to Gladys.

  • @tommiexander No, you made it sound like The pips version was the original, when in fact it wasnt at all. two artists had recorded the song before Glady Knight ever did. "I see that you got on the Internet to look this up"..was that supposed to be some sort of slight? Where the fuck else was i supposed to look, the outdated encyclopedia on my shelf? idiot. And your facts are still wrong...The pips werent the first to release the song on the radio, The Miracles were...2 Years before The Pips

  • @kuztoml65

Child Please..., It ain't that serious for you to get all bent out of shape and technical about it. But if you want to go there; The Miracles never released the song; they recorded it......O.K.?

  • @tommiexander You're right, The Miracles didnt release the song, their manager did. All three versions were on the radio at the same time for a while.

  • the all time hippest song ever, done by the hippermost, gorgeous, smiley, get down on it, Gladys Knight. People THIS is music, fun, fast and frotastic!

  • I love just watching Edward,Bubba & Will a-cookin' on this Goddamn record!!!!!

  • Dam I cant listen to one of her songs once, I have 2 play it several times, Her voice does something to me.
