I only found out about it from 'The Best Music You've Never Heard', put out by the Rough Guide people. A great song, and thanks for putting it up. Greetings from australia.
mi domando perchè siano passati così sottotraccia...... grande gruppo, canzone da incorniciare.... ma sono considerati una band minore, un po' come Spanky & our Gang altro gruppo underrated
As a singer/songwriter, I've started listening to psychedelic rock again and am really into bands like Them, The Zombies but especially 13th Floor Elevators and West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. These guys are fantastic and I really love this track! Why the hell have I not heard this before????
nice story in john peels book about this lot. I'd never heard them before. i think he invited them to uk. anyway- FWIW he described this at the time as the best record ever made , and as playing one of best gigs he'd ever seen. cheers for posting
The Misunderstood are one of the most interesting bands I have ever discovered. Ugly Things fanzine wrote a great series of articles about this band which goes into great detail of the history from past to present. If it wasn't for the vietnam war conscription of of several members of The Misunderstood (and all the other great Amercian Psych / Garage Rock Bands)..Musical history would have been very different..
so cool that Rick Brown is actually on here, I hope to visit Thailand some day for a book signing and buy a talisman! Thank you sir for your mission of peace, and this your eternal longing for our potential and lamenting how we fall short ("...don't want to go")
somebody must have tis lot live one of the most life changing experiences i ever had was meetin a guy called jim duffy turned me on to garage rock i for my part failed miserably trying to interest jimmy in vile punk rubbish
A 5 star song: I Can Take You To The Sun - The Misunderstood [Riverside, California] - 1967 - "AMG pick. VERY GOOD soft vocals with a soft psych-beat. Spanish guitar." - Before The Dream Faded-1992. NOTE: Of the thousands of U.S. garage bands who struggled in the '60s without achieving international success, the Misunderstood were among the very best. Formed in Riverside, CA, in 1963.
One of my all time favourite tracks, from one of the all time great bands. When I bought a jukebox for my living room, this was the first record that went on there.
1966: the year of Shapes Of Things, Paint It Black, All Or Nothing, Tomorrow Never Knows, Eleanor Rigby, Sunny Afternoon, Substitute, Wild Thing, Making Time, Don't Bring Me Down, Good Vibrations, Summer In The City, Happenings 10 Years Time Ago, I Had Too Much To Dream, I Feel Free, Mud In Your Eye, Along Comes Mary, Eight Miles High, Homeward Bound, Just Like A Woman, Sunshine Superman, Seven And Seven Is, Gimme Some Lovin', God Only Knows, East-West, You're Gonna Miss Me...and this.
Hey Kirkwallboy, thanks so much for turning me on to this great band. I feel like an idiot having never heard of them. Totally psychedelic and yet raw and garagy. Listening to this song makes me wanna take a bong hit and play it again much louder. :-) Cheers, Perry
In a world that is beautiful, but fucked over by politicians, bankers and the stupid follow their turds down the lavvy pan media, this is a bit of fresh air.
Dont know what happened to the graphics when posted my reply below..check out Richard Shaw Brown, the singer, whose interesting post Misunderstood life as a Hare Krishna devotee (who were very much part of the San Fransisco undergroun scene) can be found on internet
A quick trip to Amazon revealed that there's basically one, at least of this lineup of the band. It's a collection of rarities called "Before the Dream Faded".
They moved to London in 1966, with the assistance of their manager, John Peel. They recruited Englishman Tony Hill on guitar. Fontana Record's PR launch and glowing media reviews made commercial success certain, but the group was forced to disband when the lead singer was drafted into the Vietnam war. They had only recorded 7 tracks in London, all of which are considered classics. Goran Obradovic wrote, "they were ahead of their time, practically inventing the psych genre."
first heard this on radio 2 on 27 aug 09 love floyd but this blew my head.john peel even said in the 60s that this was proberly the best pop song ever
The lead singer avoided being drafted in the war becoming a Hare Krishna devotee and is still one and also a prominant figure in gemology and has a jewelry store next to the residence of the king and queen of Thailand. Check out further by googling Richard Shaw Brown and expand outwards, an oddessy and slice of underground culture meets spiritual..interesting to al those who havnt excluded the spiritual influences of the sixtees underground psychedelic revolution. There is a film in thepipeline.
One of the truly great singles of its era, cruelly overlooked when it came out, rarely played on the radio and pretty well impossible to buy in the shops, even in London. It also suffered from killer competition from singles bands like the Electric Prunes and Left Banke, and LP masterworks by the Byrds, Love and Doors. And, crucially, nobody knew if the Misunderstood were Yanks or Brits. There was just too much magnificent music being made 66-67 - this band lost out. They were well named.
found this lot for the 1st time today, its been like a musical epiphany, can't believe this is from '66.when i read it was John Peel who found them it all made sense, the man was a dj god!
If the US draft had not cruelly interrupted proceedings for this band, I guess we could have been looking at Youtube views in the 2 million bracket, instead of only 2 thousand or so at current reckoning
Jon Peel discovered these guys, his genius for discovering talent is unparallelled. He met JFK (and his assassin!), was an IBM computer programmer, was a breakaway US DJ and Beatles expert in the 60's. Crikey, and that was before he got serious with championing world music in the 70's back home for BBC radio.
I didn't realize this was on here until today...what a great song this is! And to think when I was a boy I lived not too far away from these guys in Southern California.
This is one of the best songs in rock history in my opinion.
Don't worry, an ordinary soldier has to have much more techincal training these days. The British army does not want conscripts. I think you are safe.

Beautiful sound , just beautiful...Essence of 1966 transition period. No energy like it prior, the promise of unprecedented levels of Freedom Hope.
Where is it now? WHERE IS THIS ENERGY NOW!!!??
What is it about hominids, that their despotic traits always seem to prevail?
