I was already a fan when I first saw them do this on a documentary... and was blown away. With Clive Thacker on drums and Dave Ambrose on bass, the trinity was a great combo... funky, swinging, bluesy... and Julie made it even more soulful. This band was extremely mature for the young age of the players. That Julie sang so well and looked so cool may have predicted a serious pop career for her, but she opted instead to work the fringe of the music world... seemingly living and loving obscurity.

heard this in a record shop yesterday, started bopping away, and the assistant took it off and put on some Heavy Metal ballcocks. All was not lost though and he managed to score a copy of Vol. #4 of Twistin' Rumble for £4. Then it was off to hit 50p singles box in Oxfam for several British Beat goodies by the Hollies, Animals, and Herman's Hermits: "She's a must to avoid, a complete impossibility...". Tomorrow work.
When music was good and women could sing.....ahhhhh.....refreshing and powerful all at once. Modern women singers are utterly terrible compared to this. It's all T & A these days, no talent.
I never hear of id this febore, back in the tray when music could say what God would denounce, in artistic display of all we believed but dare not display in open confrontation with the darlings as we lay our swords into the frock
Julie Driscoll appeared in a film for tv in the late 60's. I remember watching it at the time completely mesmerized. I think it had one of the first tv nude scenes... very simple storyline.... anyone remember what it was called? I was interested to read Julie Driscol performed with ex Soft Machine Robert Wyatt and that Elton Dean (also ex Soft Machine) later linked up with Julie's husband Keith Tippet....fantastic musicians all of them...thanks for posting this fritz5170 Julie we love youx
Hi.Julie and Brian were the coolest people in the world circa 67-70.Cooler,in fact, than ALL the muppets out there today making "product" rather than expressing the beauty of the soul
The same with me I was 17 at that time and living in France ! It brings back so many good memories ! and Julie's voice was so amazing ! makes me shivering all over again !
So beautiful...she is one of the greatest singers ever. David Ackles version is also very expressive but I grew up with Julie's version with Brian Auger so I have found memories every time I listen to it. Thank you for the post.
david ackles wrote this about cairo, il

This song is by singer/songwriter David Ackles, and it's about Cairo*, Illinois, not Cairo, Egypt.
*pronounced "Care-o" BTW - good to know if you ever find yourself hitching a ride there.

I love this song so much.
Has she been to Cairo recently? What a stinking city. I hope they make a better place out of it, when Mubarak is history.
KatzPalme 10 months ago
Some of the lyrics seem particularly poignant now, given the current dramatic unrest in Cairo.

Yes, Watteau9, David Ackles. I have 2 of his albums. The first, "David Ackles" has Road to Cairo and Down River - 2 fine soulful tunes.
Julie was a fine lookin'..Bird?
That what Brits called their gals @ 68?
There is another vid - yours too Fritz?-
of Driscoll and Rod Stewart backing Long John Baldry. B&White vid. Brian nearby???
Good stuff.
Thanks again.
