I think this could be how it was in the original demo. Ben has said it was origionally a major key piano songs that was a mix of George Harrison's "Isn't it a pity" and The Band's "The Night they Drove Ole Dixie Down" and it sounds like both of them
I tunes did an accidental release i believe about a week before the cd came out, and I listened to the sample and it was this version. I dont know about anyone else but I like this version better
Has anyone else noticed that this is pretty much 'Different Names For The Same Thing' with different words and a different key?! The entire song I'm waiting for him to go into the 'D.N.F.T.S.T.' chorus. Nice, Ben. I still love it tho.
how in the hell could you possibly rate trans and plans over whtf? you're crazy! Ben even said he didn't like plans. I dare you to listen to it from title track to scientist studies and tell me it is not a better album.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about what is their best album and what is not. I believe this so strongly that I won't even say which album is my favorite. Though the temptation is difficult to resist.
Did he just straight out say he didn't like the record? The only thing I remember him saying about the record that was negative was that you couldn't just sit in a room full of guitars and play and that plans wasn't straightforward. Seriously, what an amazing album(excluding different names)
ALL of their albums are fucking great but i feel they hit their best on Transatlanticism and Plans and hopefully Narrow Stairs will be as great as those two also
this song is supposedly just ben and a guitar on the album accorind to billboard. here's the new albums track list: "Bixby Canyon Bridge" "I Will Possess Your Heart" "No Sunlight" "Cath..." "Talking Bird" "You Can Do Better Than Me" "Grapevine Fires" "Your New Twin Size Bed" "Long Division" "Pity and Fear" "The Ice Is Getting Thinner"
In a recent interview, Death Cab mentioned "The Ice is Getting Thinner" is on the record. They said it's a slow electric guitar song much like "Brothers on a Hotel Bed." I can't wait!
Hopefully it'll be good... I really liked brothers on a hotel bed so holding "the ice is getting thinner" to the standard of brothers might make it less sweet.
I think he might have messed up intentionally at first (by playing the beginning of Different Names), because he turned and gave a little smirk to the audience... it was a great show, definitely...
such a beautiful song i love it DC4D is so amazing!

the album song doesnt sound anything like this. these are major chords. in the album its minor chords and its an acoustic guitar song
Boxcarracer190 3 years ago 2
This is how Gibbard wrote it and Chris Walla later took out the piano and wrote new music under it and totally reworked the song for the record.
johnielsen08 3 years ago 2
you mean its clean electric guitar in the studio version.

ladies, ladies please...
clearly the albums rate as follows:
1. photo album
2. transatlantacism
3. plans
4. We have the facts
5. songs w chords
6. something about airplanes
But in all honesty, his work with postal service probably fits right in behind transatlantacism and in front of plans
hannalilyshow 3 years ago 2
That is the exact order I would have put them in!
drowninginapplesauce 3 years ago
1. Transatlanticism
2. The Photo Album
3. We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes
4. Plans
5. Something About Airplanes
6. You Can Play These Songs With Chords

Thanks so much! I was at the show, but I was to the left so I couldn't see his face while he was playing the piano. This song basically made me cry.
The piano part sounds like Different Names.
