On May 1, 1839 in Geneva, Antoni Patek together with another Polish immigrant, the gifted Warsaw watchmaker Franciszek Czapek established their manufacture producing watches. The company was financially supported also by its first workers, among others Polish watchmakers: Wawrzyniec Gostkowski, Wincenty Gostkowski, and Władysław Bandurski.
@dieselboy808 maybe you are right, some designs are like that. There is a luxury store watch near maybe I should go and see it in person, it may change my feelings towards it
When I first saw this video, I was disppointed with the looks of the Nautilus and can't understand what all that fuss is all about. I changed my mind when I tried one while buying a 5127G Calatrava. The 5711R looks so good on my wrist that I bought one instead of a AP Royal Oak Offshore. No regrets since. I will still buy an Offshore in 12 months time when I build up my watch fund.
Why so many find this model attractive is frankly beyond me as in my view it's utterly unattractive. At one time Patek was about taste and discretion and although many still think it is, many others with decades of experience, think otherwise. It's a fact that the vast majority of purchasers know just enough about horology to "get by" and simply have a need to align themselves with a famous brand. To many, Patek has replaced Rolex as the brand to impress the ignorant with.
fair enough, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. i think these are tacky and not robust watches. they do not do what they say they do. nautilus means nautical. this thing is water resitant to what 50meters?? even a cheap casio will do what it is meant to. this is basically just a con. at least the traditional/horological pateks do what they are meant to...
There are many Nautilus variations, this model in particular has been around since 1976, pre-owned models are less expensive than their brand new counterparts ;) but there are also less expensive quartz variations which are not the 42mm 'Jumbo' these are 38mm, they're also available in TT, Gold, SS and in automatic movements as well.

Why do Pateks cost so much? Are they really 10 times more accurate or durable than say a Rolex?
GregHuismans 1 year ago
No, they are not more accurate or durable, it is alitlle bit more sophisticated than a rolex an they
have complication-versions (movements vis various functions). And Pateks are much more
exclusive than Rolexes.
sakowatch12 1 year ago
@GregHuismans Pateks are much more luxurious and aesthetically pleasing than Rolexes are

you have to have it on your wrist to see the magic!
its outer simplicity gives the complicated inner mechanics even more charm.
watches are supposed to be simple on the outside!

@muratb333 It grows on you, I sorta didn't like it either, it's their signature watch I think, the "affordable" one.

@dieselboy808 The Aquanaut is about half the price of Nautilus and thus more affordable.

@muratb333 it's a great looking watch when you see it attached to a wrist. Much better looking when worn than an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
