as usual, Donovan bigging himself up. Every concert, every interview he does, it's full of relentless self-promotion. Why can't he let us just assess him for what he is and does? The man's done some fine work but please drop all the reminders about possible involvement in numerous events of musical history.
You wonder - in his case, as well as McCartney's, when do the great songs stop coming? What happens? Does some angel just cut you off one day, and poof, you're just a regular musical doof like the rest of us? What is melodic intuition, and from whence does it come and go?
I saw this guy in the 70's at The Boston Garden, not sure of who he opened for, The Who?, Yes? Anyway, he did a great job, just him and his guitar in that vast place. He filled it up with sound. It's a challenge to do that in a small room never mind a 15,000 seat arena. Kudos!
@zyxquark Seriously. Donovan was a staple in the hippie period. Everyone liked him and yes, his tunes were all well known and played over and over. It was good stuff and part of the tapestry weave of the time. (wait, can I really be that old? sigh) These folks need to take some time to study and understand before casting negative comments.
@zyxquark - I'll have you know that there are no "zits on my butt." Why did you go and remove all of your comments? Embarrassed? That your daughter probably does drugs?
@zyxquark - Well, I'll have to take your word for it, as I haven't. Seriously, why did you suddently delete all of your lousy comments? Is it because you're a dumbass? That's it, isn't it, dumbass?
Donovan met my spiritual master, the founder of the Hare Krishna Movement, AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and listened to him speak spiritual philsophy with rapt attention until his girlfriend dragged his away : ( Paul John and George learned the hammer and claw technique from Don while they were in Hrisikesa.
I saw Donovan at the Beatles convention in Liverpool in 2007 (and to listen to him) he was invaluable to the Beatles musicianship...his teachings to Paul & John "transformed" their guitar playing.
Now he may has showed them how to master a folkie finger picking style....but a true friend wouldn't have made so much fuss about it.
He then met his public in a side room and sold his autographed picture for £8.00...I wasn't about to pay it ...so I left.....make of this what you like
Ok, that was awesome. Donovan had an influence on this song, just as he had a direct influence on Dear Prudence. Having him cover it is like the spirit moving full circle.
i met donovan once after a neil young gig....i stopped him and asked about hanging out in india with the beatles and about playing guitar with them....he said.."oh yea.they were great pupils!"
You are poetry, of Peace, joy and love keep skipping along as you sing the song. From the Mandolind Man from the Christy Minstrels. Oh and thanks for giving me on cassette HmS Donovan back in the 80s when I met you in the bank in Beverly. Still singing songs for the little people with my wife Elizabeth. Cowboy Buck

Weird that a guy famous and well off for decades has such a crappy sounding guitar and can barely carry a tune now.
TRavis picking was not invested by Donovan. BEatles picked up the pattern and RAN with it.

It's cool there's history on his cover of the McCartney song. Donovan still looks really good for his age....hope I'm that lucky.
