@fitchhollister True, a Hi Lift Jack can winch just like a hand winch, they are a very diverse unit. But they can also be a very dangerous unit, it is easy for them to slip or damage a vehicle during jacking and if not adequately controlled they can flick back and injure the user quite easily. Again with that said, Hi Lift jacks are a great product in the hands of someone who is experienced.

The Extracta can winch up to 20m in one setup making winching over steps or slippery area's a breeze.

I appreciat the "human power winch" as a back up or last resort winch. We all know that a hydraulic powered winch is useless when stalled in water and the electric winch works only as long as the battery has power when stalled. Only a fool will wonder far without redundant back up systems.

it would no problem. These things are a copy of the original Tirfor. They are used by Fire Brigades and the British Army to lift fallen trees - remove vehicles in accidents etc. The biggest will lift 3.5 tons vertically so it will pull a hell of a lot more than that - far more powerful than an electric winch but hard work and slow. The main advantage is that you can pull sideways or backwards. Also good for lowering down a steep slope.

Yeah, I'll be picking up a hand winch for my new 4WD. I prefer them over electric simply because there is less to go wrong, and they have more recovery options.
