The debt ceiling crisis was not about the debt ceiling, it was a game of chicken, and the democrats caved first. America has a spending problem, primarily the wars we are in, but we also need to tax in a different way.

Everyone I know is struggling too much, with finding a job or planning ahead should they be laid off, with getting health care or mental care, with not losing their house. The issue is not that we have the wrong people running for office, but that in an absence of feedback from any other sources these people will listen to the voices that do speak to them, mainly, the corporations who finance their elections. In the case of the Tea Party, you see a very vocal minority who got involved.
So the answer is not for everyone to run for office, but for everyone to get involved & informed. Then talk to their elected officials!

It is also the reason everything is getting so expensive cuz printing money creates inflation.
