This song is brilliant its a song once you hear it you will never forget it, i found a cassette 23 years ago and this is one of the songs on it never knew who sang it, thanks to Youtube i have reunited on of the all time greats, nothing these days compares to it...
Let's put it this way. Madonna singing it this live situation would sound very disappointing! Even if she dared do it, she would have her voice drenched in reverb to give it some sort of presence.
The lyrics almost make me cry...full of quiet desperation and uncertainty, but she sings it with such grace and restraint it almost makes that notion seem pretty and enjoyable.
Strange but likable, well thats my take on it anyhow.
Great song and a lovely lady. She lives in my part of the world and was kind enough to present our certificates at the computer study course we attended, no diva here just pure talent!
Comparing Barbara to Madonna is like comparing Streisand to Britney Spears. There is simply no comparison. Check out Madonna singing this on YouTube - can anyone HONESTLY say that Madge's version comes anywhere near this? Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice knew what they were doing when they offered this song to Barbara, still a relative unknown at the time, on the original studio album of Evita.
I think that Barbara brings her own twist to the song just as Madonna does.. Barbara plays it like hard egded young woman that the mistress was suppost to be in the musical.. Madonna the other hand was singing this song out of context as a 15 year old Eva.. So she played it alot more timid and unsure and scared of the unknown.
Yip, Ive got the vinyl and cd version. you can still get the cd in the shops, amazon etc. I saw him in Newcastle playing in Jesus Christ Superstar in the 70s. Top man!
the only reason u think madonna is better, (not just with this song but most evita songs) is cos u have heared that version more than this, yes madonna portrayed the part well but u cant beat the orig's julie covington, elaine paige etc
Well Dear..even Madonna knows she is not the greatest..so that just leaves you. Madonna is a SUPERB performer..but with a tricky and beautiful ballad like this she is way over stretched vocally. Just because you admire and like someone doesn't mean they are best at everything..good judgement often comes with growing up I find. You may too.
Patti Lupone was the original broadway. The original concept was Julie Covington as Evita and Barbara Dickson sing the role of the mistress i.e. this song
I think Madonna is great....but with the best will in the world - her vocal ability - in terms of range, pitching, tone etc - is just not as good as Barbara Dickson.
Comparing Madonna's Voice to Barbara Dixons is like comapring George Bush to Jfk, On her best day day Madonna couldnt touch Barbara Dixon on her worst day
Madonna cant toush this version. her sugar coated version stinks and thats why the argentines hated her movie. Trashy american rubbish.....usual cheap production to keep the masses entertained.
This is Barbara Dickson's song. As an interpreter of material she is unrivalled as Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber released when they asked her to be the very first person to record it in 1976. Dickson is a better singer and a better actress.
bollocks! I took my young neice to see Madonna 'live' and she has a very average voice - not that most of the ppl in her audience would know any better. Many of her fans know little about what 'real musical talent' means.
Yeah...or perhaps 'many of her fans' want spectacular multi-media entertainment rather than a two-hour display of technical vocal competance. People think it is shallow to be famous only for beauty but you are born with a beautiful face just like you are born with a beautiful voice. Might sounds nice but it is frankly boring and nothing to really admire.
Anyone born with a voice can sing - only one person was born Madonna. And if anything, she has more talent as a performer and creative force to get where she is and stay there for 30 years on 'average' talent.
Besides, I would defy you to listen to the Confessions show and say she has an 'average' voice? "Average"? Really??...'average' means 'as good most people'. Come on!
I'm not saying madonna can't sing, I'm just saying her voice isn't an 'all time great'! Yes, she has been around a long time, and she has worked very hard. But how much longer can she continue to dress like a teenager and make songs which appeal to that age group? No-one can go on forever :)
No her voice isn't an 'all time great' - but she has never said otherwise herself, and that is not why she is famous.
I don't agree that she dresses like a teenager. I think that she dresses beautifully and creatively in videos and on stage and quite classicaly at 'events'...which is perfect.
I AM a teenager and I can confirm that in this image-obsessed age, Madonna looking so young allows her to stay in the spotlight. She is as mch of a club and chart success as ever.
classic

I dont think Madonnas voice carries the pathos of a vulnerable prostitute...cos i dont think Madonnas ever been a victim of life...
Barbara Dickson's tender voice over Elaine Paiges caterwauling anyday

Dickson is in a class of her own - lesser singers like Paige, Madonna etc just dont' compare.
