I appreciate what you guys can do, it is enviable the task you make look easy, of course it is not. Thanks for giving advice, it will help many. As for myself, I am far too nuts...(lol)
I'm not so sure anybody can draw or paint a masterpiece... what matters is you keep practicing and striving to improve your art, and to not be snobby...it's easy for some people I know to put down other artists because they feel superior, but there's room for everyone...if you can make a million dollars making a simple comic, you'll get the last laugh
i have to add that i also beleive that drawing is talent as well as skill, but even talent needs practice....fantastic technique dan - i paint with oils too and and this has really helped me with my technique. i never thought of letting the pencil drawing show thru!
yer i do, thats why im at college. but this isnt all practise. most people could train all their life but wouldnt be able to paint the mona lisa. this is largely down to talent. but all in all you are right nothing is acheived without hard work
i do agree in part with you, but art is a talent combined with effort. i can guarentee da vinci would have been the best artist when he was five and so on. mainly down to hard work. i know people at my college who are rediculously talented, but put minimal effort in. however they will not achieve as much as those with effort. so i suppose you are more right
@ryanmurphy2611 Bouguereau was the most famous painter of the 1800's, arguably the most technically skilled painter to ever live. He was accepted 99th out of 100 into the l'ecole des beaux arts... he barely got in.
Painting is a science, not some sort of magical talent that only few possess. That's why every great painter studied with a great painter-- the knowledge was passed on from one generation to another. There's never been a master realist painter who learned on his own.

ah well i didn't know you where in collage. But i disagree about the part where not everyone one can paint the mona lisa even if they did practice.
As long as someone puts in the dedication and has the patience i believe they can be a great painter. Because painting isn't a talent, its a skill.

a person who is the master of patience and dedication will always be better then those with "natural talent"
so even those in your college that have that talent and are better then you will be nothing if you keep on with dedication ^_^
basically being stubborn gets you somewhere sometimes ^_^
btw this was a nice conversation i had thanks ^_^

@DarkerCry that said, there's a reason they're called MASTERS and why nearly everyone studies from them
