Avatar was built from the ground up as a complete and seamless whole. It spares no detail. Go look at some material on the underlying science. If you think the hard labor of all the extremely knowledgeable people there isn't an act of creation you are a fool.

That approach extends to all aspects of the film. No corner-cutting, no "It's just a movie" shortcuts, no holes, no gaps, no problem. Character-wise, you wouldn't call Luke in Star Wars a "non-creative" character because he has commonalities with other heroes, would you? Sully may share something with protagonists of other works in the genre..

They dont bother worrying about setting up the characters or storylines becasue they know they need to keep the A.D.D generations attention. After all, that is the generation that are the majority of movie goers today, so if they dont like a movie, they will tell their friends that it sucked and then people wont go to it. So back to my original point, that is why movies today have been lacking in quality. The director, producers, ect. are aware that the current generation has short attention spans and dont have the patience to sit through scenes of not much action while the storyline and characters develop. So they just throw a bunch of good graphic scenes and a bunch of cool special effects to keep their attention, out of fear that they wont like the movie if there are too many so called "boring" scenes.

But all that talking and not much action scenes at the beginning allow you to understand how the dinosaurs were created, and you are introduced to important characters and you are able to find out about their personalities. Movies are much better when they are able to get you emotionally invested into the characters where you actually care about what happens to them. That is why titanic worked, because people became emotionally invested in jack, and thats why they actaully cared when he died.

Quite a few have complained about it "starting too slow" or "using too much exposition" or somesuch, when comparatively it cuts to the chase well enough. It's truly sad when people justify complaining about a director's style in this regard (which they did in the case of Avatar) over the fact that he actually sets up his plots properly (also Aliens, Titanic).
